Sounds like you've had my luck over the last month. 3wks ago, I blew a radiator tank, idling unattended at work, while I plowed out my parking spot(ran until it knocked, then stalled before someone got my attention). A week later, a battery cable randomly lost connection(still confused on that, absolutely no power, then touching a wire to the battery terminal(underhood light I've never perminantly attached power to, I just wedge the wire into the + battery clamp when needed, was using it to test for power and everything startyed working again), then last Friday, the water pump gasket blew out... as I was getting ready on the absolute last day to go for my annual inspection. Simply squeezing the rad hose blew it.
Last time I had a vehicle fire was around 2003/2004.... Engine caught on fire('91 Caravan 2.5l, fire on top of intake manifold), put it out and drove it home. I don't recall even having to do any repairs.

OH WOW!!! That's a lot of bad luck, but sometimes this stuff happens to remind us how good things are when everything is working properly, you know? I have this button that I keep in my car that says "to have more, desire less" and its so true. Everyone wants a perfect life, but that doesn't serve us. There's a saying, "ask God for strength and he gives you hard times" God literally gave me this car, and my Supra, to turn me into a mechanic, and for that I am so grateful.

I keep thinking about what you said quite a few videos ago, that if you're going to make a video you have to put on makeup before you go work on stuff. I don't think I would get anything done if I had to do that.
Absolutely fantastic that you took the motor apart to see what was going on in there. That looks like you could have fixed it, maybe? New brushes and clean up the melted mess? But the new fan was probably a better idea

I clicked on this video because my 2008 Kia spectra has been overheating and started smoking the other day. I bought a new thermostat and was searching RUclips because I’d like to be able to fix it myself but I don’t know shit about cars. Not sure exactly what all you’re talking about in this but I’m happy that someone out there is putting this type of content on the internet for people who are clueless about cars like myself. I also wanted to add that my grandma and mom both had Volkswagen rabbits when I was a kid.

This is the best vw fix I've had all week. Not just because you have an awesome mk1 rabbit with an mk3 2.0 in a Grey and purple but because YOU are bringing us the repair work in all your green haired glory. The automotive sector needs more awesome women - helping show younger girls that - cars aren't just a boys hobby or career- AGG is a great show that shows younger females they can do anything they want - and I'm grateful as a father and friend of parents with younger kids - that young people are being shown what in my generation - possibly yours as well what was said wasn't true- Girls can be greasey and get grimey and still be attractive- my cousin was the FIRST female to go through our tech-schools automotive program and graduate high school into the trade. She was hired as a technician right out of school for bge - our local power company's fleet service department. However they had huge rules on her looks as a female in the garage. No painted or false nails, no dyed hair, highlights ect. Hair had to be tied up and back and under a hat if long - for safety. And other things like no make up and stating they had to wear black or Grey undergarments under their uniform so that they wouldn't show easily. Basically taking her femininity while at work, because they didn't "want the men distracted" little did they understand that if a man is going to try and pursue a female it doesn't matter what she looks like he's going to pursue her. On the clock and off. My cousin eventually went to a desk job and then left bge to do some private work and had the ability to be herself and do what she loved- until she got married to a psycho but that's another story. I just think what you're doing and how you're doing it shows that women can do whatever they want and love to do while they look however they feel comfortable and it is awesome to see the progress in at least one area of the industry

Wow. The fan issue is the most recent thing I had to deal with on my MK1 (in San Antonio) just last month. I didn't want to use the generic fan from NAPA bec it's a one speed and it looks like the original is a two speed, so I took my original fan motor apart & fixed a seized bushing, then repaired the wallowed out inner support with JB. There's a way to take it apart that doesn't destroy it, it's tedious - but I'm good at that - someone once called me "the piddler" bec doing tedious tasks often looks like you're piddling. Mud daubers are a PIA in SA aren't they? I didn't drive my MK1 for a few years until recently. I'm shocked at the amount of attention they get now! Yours looks awesome with all the mods & details - you're an inspiration!

My Anti theft system has been driving me nuts in my mk3 96' golf gti i just got, 1 day i can start the car, the next day i cant lol, or i can and it dies immediately and the hazards stay on . Its like it has a mind of its own, or suddenly thinks im stealing it. Im going nuts with researching info about the anti theft module (which is what i want to say the main culprit is) and trying to remove/bypass it, relays, fuses, unhooking the battery (which is brand new and i even recharged thinking maybe it was my battery), checking if its my door switches being stuck and not registering correctly, starter issues, alternator issues, you name it. This car actually belonged to a good high school friend who was also a car person like me, but she passed away very young at 23 in 2020, so i bought it from her family where it sat for years in hope to restore it in her honor. She was a dope sweet hearted girl, and the car itself is super cute, white paint-still in VERY decent condition for 1996 for an outdoors-kept east coast car, lowered and on cute little solid looking BBS reps, with good potential for a fun little project, typical 8v 2.0 with a manual transmission, 150k original miles. Its actually tuned haha, on what i have no clue, but it has 2 step and launch control lmao. sounds amazing lol, like a proper N/A racecar even with its tiny stock exhaust. now if i can just get it to stay on and not trigger my hazards lmao.

Watching the ABA work brought me back to the Mk3 Jetta I had. Watch out for cracks in the timing belt cover rubbing the side of the belt 😬

Didn't look to see if others commented re switched vs non-switched, but it's common to use non-switched so that the engine doesn't have a temp spike after it's turned off, and the water circulation and movement of the car are no longer cooling the engine. The down side is that if the temp sensor fails shorted, and you've walked away from the car, you end up with a dead battery, something I experienced (and is common) with my '02 Volvo V70XC; that can result in needing a tow or a jump, after you've figured out the cause (you can't charge or jump the car to start, due to the low resistance of the motor, usually). So, it would have been nice to have a timer to limit fan on time, but that's not something easily justified, I guess.

Whiteboard tip. If you have dried dry erase marker and no solvemt, just colour over the old drawing. The new marker will rehydrate the dried marker amd you can wipe it off.

I learn so much from your videos. Question kind of off subject of this video but since you love some VW. My daughter's first car is going to be 74' super beetle auto stick. She's got a couple of years before driving but we told her she had to put it together and get it running. It was a trade, it came with rebuilt motor everything except torque converter for the trans. Finding one have been a pain butt. If you have any suggestions of new places to look or anything would greatly appreciate! You're badass keep up the awesome work.

I always use relays for fans, and I add a toggle switch for backup in case the temp sensor goes bad, and of course use a fuse. You can hide the switch so no one can see it

I love the color choice for the manifolds. Looks great. Although I don't work on engines much, I restore smaller machine shop tools (lathes and mills) in my spare time. I take a wire wheel to every bolt, screw and nut, even for the ones that will never be seen again. But I'll know. I can't help it. :)

Your epic closing music had me picturing some slow motion - high altitude drone footage of you standing on top of glorious vistas hugging a chicken at sunset ! Great to see Gaia humming again. I definitely would not want the 12v on a switched connection.
I would put it on a constant 12v source and let the temp sensor keep the fan running after turning the car off from spirited driving and not having to perform any cool down driving.
When I was in college, I also ran the radio through constant power. That way, I didn't need to leave my keys with "friends". Then come back to a missing car.

@Faye Hadley The tail lights that were "not working" actually were - just the bulbs were completely blocked by the wasp nests. Thankfully, it was cold(ish) here in Denver and the nests were vacant when I discovered them. 😀
