This whole series reminds me of two things.
    1) all the stories from SF guys in the early GWOT who said within a few years they had cut so much weight from their gear just highlights that military v. civilian difference in gear.
    2) how much hills change your pace count and timings. Map reading and hill walking to the micro orienteering level is a crazy skill that isn’t just about our paces over 100m but also the difference in speed/pacing both uphill and downhill that needs an understanding of boy your own capabilities and the terrain you are covering.

Lost alot of time resting at mile 11 (the thought of quiting set in), pushed on however, and completed the ruck... 9hrs 30 something mins... I highly recommend attending, and those oranges were amazing (If you know, you know). Was never SF, but representing the 97th SFS out of Altus AFB, OK.

I worked for a retired colonel who survived the Bataan Death March. He was 95, and when that tsunami hit Japan, god bless him! He would sit and look up the news coverage on his iPad and giggle like a schoolgirl. He wasn’t a mean man, either, so you could tell it was bad even though he wouldn’t talk about it. He also wouldn’t eat his food if I put pepper in it because he said it looked like the bugs in the scant food they got under the Japanese. He lived a good long life in spite of them, and went on to work on the atomic program. When I asked about that he gave me the side eye and asked me why I wanted to know lol. Like I might be kgb or something. God bless Col Parazzo.

    Black shirts in a desert?
Try 5.11 Strike Pant. Four way stretch & rip stop fabric. PCT thru-hikers have a LOT of great suggestions for walking shoes that can last 500+ mi.
Use bandana’s under hat. It works like socks do to shoes (get wool/smartwool if you can). Helps keep glasses on too when sweating because you pin your ears into the bandana
Actually get wool as much as you can, socks, shirt etc. works better in desert than cotton.
That opuntia cacti are great foraging, looks like they’re fruiting too. All edible & good moisture.

As a lifetime civilian who has hiked for over 30 years in both mountain and desert environs, with both civilian and military gear, using military gear can be frustrating. When an empty military ruck weighs nearly 8 lbs, that really cuts into a 45 lb. weight budget. Even a 5 lb (empty) 3 day pack feels excessive - it seems like all the military gear is just a little heavier and a little bulkier than it "needs" to be.
That said, whether using military or civilian gear, a few hard earned lessons I've learned - I always try to pack so the weight is as close to my body (my back) as reasonable. So no stuff hanging off the back of my backpack. The further that stuff gets out there, the more it feels like it's just trying to pull you down.
Also, keep everything as tight as you can. Every ounce that is flopping around is just sucking energy from your body. 4 or 5 miles you might not really notice it. 10 or 20 miles - you definitely notice it. Kurt's pack looked a lot more efficient to pack - Bucks ruck hurt me even looking at it. I know you guys have tactical considerations you have to make in the military (like making sure your IFAK is easily accessible, so probably strapped to the outside, can't be to tall because you need to be able to lift your head if you go prone, etc), but maybe this can help you guys a little.
Regardless, kudos to you for making a go of it and testing new gear and setups. And for giving us all this great content.

    • @m783w
      @m783w 2 года назад

Agreed on many parts here, the one disagreement is that the weight of the ruck is hard to decrease if your building a ruck designed to last many years with a military without getting shredded. Going below 500 denier is fine on a civi pack, but I’ll advised if you need longevity. One of these days we will have a lighter material which can hold up to the destruction.

    • @nathanbailey9153
      @nathanbailey9153 2 года назад

@@m783w TLDR; Does a pack need to be bombproof 1050d nylon made to last 50 years - NO - And it's not just the packs that need to be lighter.
First, the nylon weight isn't just what I'm talking about. One of the big things that makes most military rucks so heavy is all the extra garbage added to them, in addition to the heavy nylon used. On most military packs, nearly every inch is covered with extra webbing sewn on (literally once inch spacing of extra heavy duty webbing), extra straps, extra buckles and extra pockets. Take a look at the 5.11 Rush12, or the Basic Molle Assault pack.
The problem with a lot of the military stuff is nearly every single item, not just the pack, is heavier and bulkier than it needs to be. It's true that much of the stuff will need to be heavier than it's civilian version, but it doesn't need to be 2 or 3 times as heavy. Maybe 1.2 or 1.5 times as heavy, but not 2 or 3 or 5 times as heavy. I believe this is why Buck said in the first video that the military stuff needs to come closer to the civilian stuff and kind of "meet in the middle".
Remember, for a soldier "Mobility is synonymous with Survivability".
If you are reducing a soldiers mobility by making all their kit twice as heavy as it needs to be, then you are reducing their survivability. What good is the extra heavy duty backpack and gear if the soldier doesn't survive.
Some people think the extra weight for the gear isn't a big deal, but all the rucking induced injuries coming out of the military say otherwise. I need to find the reference, but recently completed long term studies indicate you can carry about 10% of your body weight indefinitely without risk of injury, 20% for extended periods with some risk of injury (and likely some mild cumulative injuries), and somewhere in the 30%-40% you are guaranteed to be injuring yourself (even if it's "just" cumulative long term injuries). These injuries regularly take soldiers out of the fight, both regular forces and special forces. That is expensive and reduces fighting effectiveness.
Also, I'm not sure how much toughness for longevity you really need out of a pack. One of my favorite packs of all time was a 1.5lb 15L pack made from "special" ripstop 210d nylon. I wasn't gentle on that pack. I strapped sharp ice tools (ice picks), axes and machetes to it. After 18 years of hard hiking, mountaineering, camping, ice climbing and rock climbing it was finally showing serious abrasion damage (some small holes) from the line hauling during climbing. I'm sure it would have lasted longer, but it got stolen. It's the only high quality pack I've ever had that showed any real wear. You could say it's a one-off, but I bought a newer version when my old one got stolen. That was about 6 years ago, and it's going strong. Also my brother has a similar make he's had for nearly 20 years and he uses it for similar things, and it's still functioning fine.
Now, would that 1.5lb 210d nylon pack have lasted 18 years under military conditions? Probably not. But would it have lasted 5 years? Probably. Is that long enough? Probably. Maybe it needs to last 10 years. But does it need to last a guaranteed 30 years or 50 years. Almost certainly not. Building rucking gear to last a guaranteed 30 years is what makes gear excessively heavy, and is part of what causes load carriage injuries.
And honestly, I have never actually seen a properly made pack that has gotten worn out and failed. Not civilian, not military. Not anything made within the last 30 years with any decent level of quality by any decent manufacturer. (**) I have bought a lot of old used packs, and almost invariably the only reason the people were selling them were either they had stopped doing outdoors stuff or they were upgrading to a newer, lighter more comfortable pack.
** - Now, I know that in certain jungle conditions certain molds will eat nylon, but that is an entirely different problem with a different solution. Making stuff heavier doesn't fix that problem.

    Thanks for the upload.
Can you provide some advice on preparing for the Nasty Nick assault course at SFAS? What happens if guys struggle to negotiation 1-2 obstacles properly? Can they still pass or do they get binned there and then?
    Cheers

I feel the need to tell a story of mine now.
I hiked from nikkaluokta to kebnekaise in sweden, that is 20 km up the whole way. And that was with a 25kg ruck, old military one that wasn’t fitted for me, military pants, and military heavy boots that was one size to big. On top of that, it was my second time hiking ever. The day after that I walked up kebnekaise and down again, and the day after that 20km home again. Then a 15 hour drive between me and another guy.
Definitely had to dig deep on that one.
    Regardless, good content.

Technically speaking, I believe Catalina is not a desert, but a "mild sub-tropical climate".

Its a good thing no one was a heat causality. The first time was in Iraq and the second time was a movement to contact drill which was 300 meters in full kit in 100 degree weather multiple times that day and the third was mount training all day and the funny thing is it was all desert areas with full kit. The first time it happens to you your body the more likely youll get it and can be life threatening. Glad everyone made it back home and oh that 10lb camera is about the weight of a m4 with optics and a mag not including the light or pac-15. 11 BaNG bANG BAby.

I hear you when you say it’s more difficult with military gear on but why not use the best gear possible? Most of these quality hiking packs might not be camo but they are extremely tough. No point to not use superior gear. That being said, I always hike in pants out in the East coast because you never know when you will be pushing through brush

Great film and the Island looks awesome.
The walking poles are the trick. Use them everyday.
But that's why the German and Japanese army's used bicycles in WW2.😆

Man! I've opened trails in the moutains for a couple of years after the military...11 miles in the heat and the ups and downs, that is very good brothers!
If everything turned out easy this vid would have been...not very usefull to the young guys who want to get into military. Rucking sucks all kinds and they just witness that even sf dudes can be broken by the terrain and mission ahead.

I think, you guys should attempt this again with Andy and maybe some other SF guys or team guys. Would be GREAT content lol. Maybe split the group between retired and still active duty guys? Would be cool to see the contrast, just an idea
