Eventually she found her seat, then spent the rest of the film asking questions because she'd missed so much, and making stupid comments about how the actors looked. I'm not even vaguely exaggerating any of this stuff either. Seriously, it's beyond a joke at this point - every. single. time. I go to the movies, some a*****e ruins it by acting like they are the only person in the universe that matters.
It’s hard to get excited about the extreme pastiche and predictability of Romulus. But the production design and sets and technology are so spot on and perfect, and the actor for Andy did an outstanding job.
I loved the analog feel to the computers and ship in romulus, so coherent with the technology they had in the original Alien from the 80’s! I loved the set pieces 😭
People blasting the movie are exaggerating about its problems. It's definitely flawed, but it doesn't ruin the movie. Everyone out there just looking for attention and clout, pretending they're too intelligent for this spook house ride movie. They're full of crap in my view.

Yeah but you need to have that because without seeing the alien every 15 seconds means it's not an Alien movie. AvP did the same, they constantly had the Preds uncloaking every 7 seconds because if they don't do that it's not a Predator movie. For a movie today to be an alien, or predator, or whatever movie... you need shots, shots, shots, shots and shots of the creature, or the audience might forget what movie they're watching.
I just rewatched this last night at home and that was bugging me too. It felt very artificial, and it didn’t seem like the alien was in whatever environment that the scene took place. Felt like a high budget fan film.
Also he is wearing a Canadian/North US (?) cliché Lumberjack Outfit but with Short Pants, which made me wonder about the current Weather in Wisconsin. Meanwhile Mike with his Czech Lastname Stoklasa literally looks like most Czechs i ever met in Germany and Czechia, so he fits in. Therefor i request Jay to wear proper Bavarian Lederhosen Oktoberfest Outfit for the next Half in the Bag together with Mike in his Czech Jeans and Cheap Sports Jacket Outfit, both of them representing their Ancestry Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
What was that black goo? Was the black goo different than the sparkly green goo? Was the black goo always intended for use as a weapon or was it just weird alien cum? Why would Holloway assume that the air was okay to breathe inside the spaceship just because they detected an oxygen atmosphere? If the black goo alters people's DNA why did a little fish come out of Holloway's eye? Was the black goo attacking them? If they were running away from the black goo that was attacking them and trying to kill them then why was the one guy running into the room where all the vases with the black goo was when the door closed and cut his head off, shouldn't he have been running away from that room? Did he forget his wallet in there?
In the original Alien, Ash being an android was a twist. He infiltrated the ship under the guise of a last-minute replacment for their science officer and they had no idea he was an android installed by Weyland-Yutani. This aspect of the story is completely broken, when it turns out that Ash's android models all look the same. Just one of a dozen nonsense callbacks that supplement this film to its detriment. We all had a good laugh throughout watching this, so at least theres that.
An easy explanation, is that they remade the same model, because for whatever reason it was particularly adept at understanding the xenomorph. It's like having the same version of chrome on your browser as you did 18 months ago. It's a potential capability thing.

@@kswindl Pardon? This is a pretty mainstream thing in software testing. You're trying to repeat and outcome so you repeat the inputs. If Ash made intuitive leaps that are unique to his model it's a perfect explanation. It's firmly established that android due in fact look alike. The fact the ash model wasn't well known in alien, isn't a sign that his model would be more common later. Reality doesn't work the way you feel it does.
This is set 20 years after Alien so it’s feasible that during the events of that movie the Ash model was brand new and wouldn’t have raised suspicion and in the intervening years was rolled out more generally. I don’t think it breaks that aspect of the movie but it’s still eye rolling to include it in Romulus. It’s just the Disney fan service template for almost all their franchise milking trash sadly.
Fun fact, transracial is a real term referring to children who are adopted by families or parents of another race. Edit: There was a good video here on YT by Kat Blaque where she talked about her own experiences being adopted by a white family as well as interviewing others, but sadly it looks like she removed it. Basically it touched on feelings of isolation and otherness from not being familiar with cultural elements that ppl of their same race would
I actually think Alien 3 is the perfect conclusion to the Alien trilogy. It's not a pleasant movie, but it is not supposed to be. I consider Alien: Resurrection to be more or less non-canonical. It just feels like a concept movie where everything that didn't make it into the first three movies got thrown together before they washed their hands of the whole thing.
TO ME. The Alien franchise ended at Alien. The end. Dan O'Bannon and Ridley Scott knew that Hollywood was gonna milk it. I guess Ridley Scott just stopped caring and went along with it by Prometheus. The creators made Alien as a one off. That's it. The more you milk it, the more you make it mundane and worthless.
Anti-male feminists hate Aliens. It’s easily the equal of the original, expanding on the premise, addressing unanswered questions, and creating a new take whilst expanding on the science and tactile technology that made the original so intriguing, from the realism of a fusion generators fusing elements to create a breathable atmosphere, to the technologies of the colony, and the colonial marines. It expands on the original premise. The only misgivings I have is ripley being exposed to explosive decompression. And the aliens whose torsos weren’t shattered by explosive rounds, not gradually regenerating their wounds. The first two films are equals of each other. Anyone arguing for one or the other doesn’t understand the ethos of the original which is enhanced by the sequel. Choose one, deserve none.
To be pedantic, they put out a re:view of The Fly between the last two Half In The Bags, which, to be honest, makes it seem even more like an evil Mouse is sending them to the content creation mines whip in hand.
the forced 80's aesthetic looked like shit. this whole movie sucked. This is zoomer-ization of something that existed 39 years before zoomers. The effects were bad, the sets were mid, the large scale graphics were embarassingly bad.

Not a fan of call-back cinema but Spaeny and David Jonsson make it enjoyable .Third act craziness was fun and some set pieces with gravity. “Get a way from my sister “ would have been a better line than the other .

@@GreenTeaViewer I agree, Prometheus has some issues, but some really amazing moments like the surgical pod everybody likes. I think the aesthetics are nice, and the precursor big alien men are kind neat and menacing. It loses a bit of the mystery of the first alien, and their cut script makes them bit meh but still.
Always love your reviews. I watched this with my teenage daughter and simply had fun getting grossed out with her. I wasn't mad at the movie, but it was absurd. Still had a blast

To be fair in a few places: In Alien Director's Cut, the xenomorph did the weird wall structures on its own. The structures in Aliens was a callback to that. I know they didn't _have_ to use Ash's design, and I'd have preferred if they didn't, but there is precedent for Weyland-Yutani recycling old android designs in previous movies. I didn't mind the idea as much as I did the execution. I groaned when Andy said the Aliens line, though. They really should have left it at "get away from her."

Granted, where did they get the starting material for the eggs to begin with? So about the alien life cycle: originally, there was famously a deleted scene from the original 1979 film where Ripley finds all the crew stuck to the wall, slowly morphing into giant eggs. While it was deleted for time and to not take away from the mystery of the species, it does tie back into the idea of the xenomorph being a perfect organism - it takes people, makes them into eggs which produce more facehuggers and so on. Later, Cameron obviously introduced the queen. And so the expanded lore concluded that it can go both ways: a queen is usually the main way they reproduce, but if the facehugger gives birth to a drone (which is the default version of the alien basically), it can still turn people into eggs. As a fan of most of the franchise, the original version of the process will always be far more interesting , as not only does it tie back into the themes of bodily autonomy, but it also leads to far more questions which is way more interesting than them reproducing by... just a really big alien (aliens still rocks tho).
Even still, the Prometheus stuff wasn't the worst part of the movie. The pointless and unnecessary callbacks to better Alien movies is what made this film so disappointing. I felt a pit in my stomach form the moment the Ian Holm flesh muppet showed up on screen.
Most things look alive right before they die... And nothing humans know about can survive in the unending wastness of space, so... Yeah, a lot of people did think that the alien died at the end of the first movie.

I had no hopes for this movie at all, and yet i really quite enjoyed it. The world building was superb, and the main characters were well written. It perfectly created a story in that universe. Yes, it went schlocky and a bit of a fan service feature, but for the most part, that was well done and entertaining. If i had an expectations, i probably wouldnt have, and I'm a person who thinks the last good, 'proper' Alien movie is Aliens.

Fact is. Movies are just so expensive to make. This film cost 80 million to produce and that's classed as "cheap". AI produced movies are inevitable (if it's not being done already).
@@DEADxSAINT you're right, we'll see that in coming years, but also there is no way in hell this is AI-written, yeah it hits the typical story beats, but its Fede Alvarez and a straight-to-streaming film, not a gigantic blockbuster with studio dominating every aspect trying to make it four-quadrant appealing, AI productions will come but Fede very clearly put passion into this, and im sick of ppl acting like any mediocre movie MUST be written by AI, we've seen stuff like this b4, Borderlands or Exorcist-Believer or Indy 5 are the few where I think they're so awful and made by desperate studio execs trying to claw back some profit that POSSIBLY AI could be involved, Alien Romulus is flawed but not that bad, its a lazy excuse to say its AI

i think what they meant by saying "it's written by an AI" is that the movie FEELS like something an AI would create, just a mishmash of the most famous aspects of every movie in this franchise + epic small references all happening during a very formulaic story (guys on ship but aliens try to hunt and kill them). The creators put in the same amount of effort that an AI would, while also thinking this was some "great return for this franchise that feels fresh, new and exciting!"
I totally loved this movie. To have two of my favorite reviewers end up hating it...... it's totally ok! Maybe they'll like the next one, but i had a blast.
I also liked it, but have to agree that it lost its potential as it went along. Same as Longlegs, actually. Very strong starts that evolve into something you didn't expect, but what you expected might've been cooler.
Next Alien movie: The aliens uses the eggs / pods as a football, and kicks it so it lands on your face and you get instantly facehugged. 5 seconds later a huge alien bursts out of your ass.
Looked promising at "football", but then you lost the thread. Needed the alien queen to kick a field goal, before spiking the 'ball' into an opposing player's face. Then chest-bursters pop out of her team to run up and give her a high-five and group hug. Final score: Xenomorphs 7 - Weyland-Yutani 6. The Xenos win the Goo Cup! Everyone cheers. Roll credits.
I didn't even think of this until now but perhaps the stupidest plot hole is that there's a giant xenomorph research station drifting above a Weyland Yutani mining planet, and the Xeno obsessed Weyland Yutani doesn't have a team to send there and secure it before these kids.
I just met Lance Henriksen today in Chicago at the Fan Expo. Good time. I could have dressed as Bishop, but I'm not sure how much a blue jumpsuit would have stood out haha.
Not gonna lie, I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. Agree with some points here but I definitely don’t feel as negative towards it. Felt a little long towards the end, and some things were annoying like rook and some of the callback dialogue. Overall though I actually like it quite a lot.
I would LOVE for us to get weekly content (I think daily would be perfect haha!) But I get the guys need time to record, edit, plan out, organise and obviously need the time to watch the movies in the first place. I watch/listen to Redlettermedia vids EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, it's become such a habit that I struggle to sleep if deprived (I think that surely counts as an addiction haha!) So the more content we get the happier I am!
Not only is the whole deepfake Ian Holm cynical and pointless, it also messes with the original film. In Alien it comes as a surprise to everyone that Ash is an android. In fact, it's established that he was put on the ship by the company to have his own secret mission. So why wouldn't they use an android that can't be recognized as such? If there are more of this model, the company takes a severe risk that the crew members have seen one before...
Not really, Ash was unknown to the crew of the Nostromo but there isn't really anything indicating the same model was not used by Weyland Yutani on other covert operations.
Because in Aliens Bishop stated his model was in use until the timeline of Aliens. He stated how they were glitchy so this is till to early for anyone to really recognize him in universe.

The idea makes sense but the execution pulls you out of the movie. Unless they can pull it off where it looks legit, don't do it. I wasn't paying attention to the moment, I was pushed out of the movie thinking 'man this looks terrible'.

Just watched it, i'm late to the party i know. What stuck with me the most, for some reason, is, that Rain struggles to get permission to leave the planet .. but.. then they just leave anyway and noone cares? I'm sure they can still track them throughout the movie since they are not that far away but nothing comes of it. Also, why is it such a problem if they take Andy with them? And then at the end she just wants to take him with her anyway? What? Who was the person who said: "Ok guys, so, you know our Facehugger room? Yeah if something goes wrong with the cooling, that should definitely wake up all Facehuggers there, right? No lockdown procedure of any kind! That'll get those who don't remove cryo tubes via protocol lol!" There is no much 'and then'. They flew to station and then they discover thete's a time limit and then they find 3d printed(?) facehuggers and then the pilot had a chestburster oopsie and then she accudentally hit a thing and then the ship undocks and then it perfectly lands in the perfect bay for the plot to happen, without any damage, and then the dock sealed shut and then the time limit time limits even faster!

Just watched it and I loved it. I'm not a big fan of the Alien franchise, so I'm not too familiar with all these "callbacks" and "references" that they say felt forced. I didn't notice them at all so to me it just seemed like a great movie. I've watched the other ones before, but only once each and it's never been something I got into so much to be able to recognize these "constant, irritating callbacks."
Yeah, same with the androids, the whole point is that they are the same, cause they are Android models. It's like asking why is my iPhone 15 white the same as your iPhone 15 white.

@dougcrane8031 I'm getting at the fact that people are focusing on what amounts to minor elements from the whole of the film, as if they're all the film has to offer. Every franchise movie is going to have silly little throwback lines or references. These movies only exist for nostalgia. But this movie is being lumped together with some of the worst offenders of those tropes, when it doesn't deserve to be.
As soon as I saw Jay's face in the thumbnail I muttered "oh no" under my breath Edit (and spoilers): I saw it and had a good time. The callbacks mostly felt like a greatest-hits reel, which to be honest I was okay with. CGI Ian Holm annoyed me because it would have made no difference if they'd cast another actor, and the "get away from her" line made me groan a bit but was somewhat saved by the delivery. The Engineer-Newborn thing at the end was fine, if somewhat predictable (it was also a direct callback to Prometheus where Noomi Rapace has a C-section to take the squid-thing out of her womb). I like the characters, visuals, and effects enough to where that stuff on the whole didn't bother me in the theatre, although whether it'll hold up on repeat viewings I don't know. It would have been nice if it had tried to be its own thing a bit more; they had all the ingredients there. I guess the film could be seen as wasted potential. Maybe they'll put that right in the sequel, if there is one.

I just rewatched this last night at home and that was bugging me too. It felt very artificial, and it didn’t seem like the alien was in whatever environment that the scene took place.
Felt like a high budget fan film.

I thought the movie was entirely unexciting but entertaining enough but that line made me actually angry.
In the original Alien, Ash being an android was a twist. He infiltrated the ship under the guise of a last-minute replacment for their science officer and they had no idea he was an android installed by Weyland-Yutani. This aspect of the story is completely broken, when it turns out that Ash's android models all look the same. Just one of a dozen nonsense callbacks that supplement this film to its detriment. We all had a good laugh throughout watching this, so at least theres that.
An easy explanation, is that they remade the same model, because for whatever reason it was particularly adept at understanding the xenomorph. It's like having the same version of chrome on your browser as you did 18 months ago. It's a potential capability thing.

@@kswindl Pardon? This is a pretty mainstream thing in software testing. You're trying to repeat and outcome so you repeat the inputs. If Ash made intuitive leaps that are unique to his model it's a perfect explanation. It's firmly established that android due in fact look alike. The fact the ash model wasn't well known in alien, isn't a sign that his model would be more common later. Reality doesn't work the way you feel it does.
This is set 20 years after Alien so it’s feasible that during the events of that movie the Ash model was brand new and wouldn’t have raised suspicion and in the intervening years was rolled out more generally. I don’t think it breaks that aspect of the movie but it’s still eye rolling to include it in Romulus. It’s just the Disney fan service template for almost all their franchise milking trash sadly.

I actually think Alien 3 is the perfect conclusion to the Alien trilogy. It's not a pleasant movie, but it is not supposed to be. I consider Alien: Resurrection to be more or less non-canonical. It just feels like a concept movie where everything that didn't make it into the first three movies got thrown together before they washed their hands of the whole thing.
TO ME. The Alien franchise ended at Alien.
The end. Dan O'Bannon and Ridley Scott knew that Hollywood was gonna milk it. I guess Ridley Scott just stopped caring and went along with it by Prometheus.
The creators made Alien as a one off. That's it.

The only misgivings I have is ripley being exposed to explosive decompression. And the aliens whose torsos weren’t shattered by explosive rounds, not gradually regenerating their wounds.

the forced 80's aesthetic looked like shit. this whole movie sucked. This is zoomer-ization of something that existed 39 years before zoomers. The effects were bad, the sets were mid, the large scale graphics were embarassingly bad.

To be fair in a few places:
In Alien Director's Cut, the xenomorph did the weird wall structures on its own. The structures in Aliens was a callback to that.
I know they didn't _have_ to use Ash's design, and I'd have preferred if they didn't, but there is precedent for Weyland-Yutani recycling old android designs in previous movies. I didn't mind the idea as much as I did the execution.
I groaned when Andy said the Aliens line, though. They really should have left it at "get away from her."
Yeah I was confused why they thought the Alien Queen was physically cocooning its victims without help.

So about the alien life cycle: originally, there was famously a deleted scene from the original 1979 film where Ripley finds all the crew stuck to the wall, slowly morphing into giant eggs. While it was deleted for time and to not take away from the mystery of the species, it does tie back into the idea of the xenomorph being a perfect organism - it takes people, makes them into eggs which produce more facehuggers and so on. Later, Cameron obviously introduced the queen. And so the expanded lore concluded that it can go both ways: a queen is usually the main way they reproduce, but if the facehugger gives birth to a drone (which is the default version of the alien basically), it can still turn people into eggs.
As a fan of most of the franchise, the original version of the process will always be far more interesting , as not only does it tie back into the themes of bodily autonomy, but it also leads to far more questions which is way more interesting than them reproducing by... just a really big alien (aliens still rocks tho).
Ridley Scott said he gave notes to Alvarez telling him to do certain things. I'm 99. 9 percent sure the prometheus stuff was in those 'notes'.
But the entire way they got the face huggers was from the black goo, so without there there would have been no plot to give notes on

I had no hopes for this movie at all, and yet i really quite enjoyed it. The world building was superb, and the main characters were well written. It perfectly created a story in that universe.
Yes, it went schlocky and a bit of a fan service feature, but for the most part, that was well done and entertaining.
If i had an expectations, i probably wouldnt have, and I'm a person who thinks the last good, 'proper' Alien movie is Aliens.
If I would have made this with AI it would have Danny Glover and gary busey fighting aliens in a meat plant.

Fact is. Movies are just so expensive to make. This film cost 80 million to produce and that's classed as "cheap". AI produced movies are inevitable (if it's not being done already).

i think what they meant by saying "it's written by an AI" is that the movie FEELS like something an AI would create, just a mishmash of the most famous aspects of every movie in this franchise + epic small references all happening during a very formulaic story (guys on ship but aliens try to hunt and kill them). The creators put in the same amount of effort that an AI would, while also thinking this was some "great return for this franchise that feels fresh, new and exciting!"
I totally loved this movie. To have two of my favorite reviewers end up hating it...... it's totally ok! Maybe they'll like the next one, but i had a blast.

I also liked it, but have to agree that it lost its potential as it went along. Same as Longlegs, actually. Very strong starts that evolve into something you didn't expect, but what you expected might've been cooler.
Next Alien movie: The aliens uses the eggs / pods as a football, and kicks it so it lands on your face and you get instantly facehugged.

Then chest-bursters pop out of her team to run up and give her a high-five and group hug. Final score: Xenomorphs 7 - Weyland-Yutani 6. The Xenos win the Goo Cup! Everyone cheers. Roll credits.
And Romulus fans would still eat it up.

I didn't even think of this until now but perhaps the stupidest plot hole is that there's a giant xenomorph research station drifting above a Weyland Yutani mining planet, and the Xeno obsessed Weyland Yutani doesn't have a team to send there and secure it before these kids.

Not gonna lie, I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. Agree with some points here but I definitely don’t feel as negative towards it.
Felt a little long towards the end, and some things were annoying like rook and some of the callback dialogue. Overall though I actually like it quite a lot.
The practical Alien suit and David Jonsson's performance as the android Andy are worth the price of admission.
I enjoyed the sets with all the big shiny buttons.

I would LOVE for us to get weekly content (I think daily would be perfect haha!) But I get the guys need time to record, edit, plan out, organise and obviously need the time to watch the movies in the first place. I watch/listen to Redlettermedia vids EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, it's become such a habit that I struggle to sleep if deprived (I think that surely counts as an addiction haha!) Not only is the whole deepfake Ian Holm cynical and pointless, it also messes with the original film. In Alien it comes as a surprise to everyone that Ash is an android. In fact, it's established that he was put on the ship by the company to have his own secret mission. So why wouldn't they use an android that can't be recognized as such? If there are more of this model, the company takes a severe risk that the crew members have seen one before...
Not really, Ash was unknown to the crew of the Nostromo but there isn't really anything indicating the same model was not used by Weyland Yutani on other covert operations.
This deep fake was an insult. It pulled me out of the film every time I saw it.
Because in Aliens Bishop stated his model was in use until the timeline of Aliens. He stated how they were glitchy so this is till to early for anyone to really recognize him in universe.

The idea makes sense but the execution pulls you out of the movie. Unless they can pull it off where it looks legit, don't do it. I wasn't paying attention to the moment, I was pushed out of the movie thinking 'man this looks terrible'.

What stuck with me the most, for some reason, is, that Rain struggles to get permission to leave the planet .. but.. then they just leave anyway and noone cares? I'm sure they can still track them throughout the movie since they are not that far away but nothing comes of it. Also, why is it such a problem if they take Andy with them? And then at the end she just wants to take him with her anyway? What?

There is no much 'and then'. They flew to station and then they discover thete's a time limit and then they find 3d printed(?) facehuggers and then the pilot had a chestburster oopsie and then she accudentally hit a thing and then the ship undocks and then it perfectly lands in the perfect bay for the plot to happen, without any damage, and then the dock sealed shut and then the time limit time limits even faster!
No flight control contacted them at all? Unbelievable

I liked the movie but that was weird. Especially since it’s a robot, why not make an animatronic? In a movie that’s mostly practical why not use an animatronic for Rook?
They did Ian Holmes because he is WY "science officer" android model during this time. It made sense to have him on a science space station

Just watched it and I loved it. I'm not a big fan of the Alien franchise, so I'm not too familiar with all these "callbacks" and "references" that they say felt forced. I didn't notice them at all so to me it just seemed like a great movie. I've watched the other ones before, but only once each and it's never been something I got into so much to be able to recognize these "constant, irritating callbacks."

TBF I don't blame people for being jaded, reboots and remakes are everywhere and generally pretty shit but if you can ignore the clear callbacks which I think to their point about claiming no one under 40 should care, then it does kinda work (albeit if you do remember those scenes then it's either a callback you like or an instant eyeroll).

The point was in the beginning he’s cracking basic Dad jokes and later picking up cussing from the humans. That’s why he paused so long. Still a stupid comeback, but there’s a reason to it.

sounds eye rolling like Terminator always using the "Ill Be Back" and "Come with me if you want to live" lines, we dont need those callbacks at all, but every movie has to do it, probably some Exec post it noting to the film makers.

@dougcrane8031 I'm getting at the fact that people are focusing on what amounts to minor elements from the whole of the film, as if they're all the film has to offer. Every franchise movie is going to have silly little throwback lines or references. These movies only exist for nostalgia. But this movie is being lumped together with some of the worst offenders of those tropes, when it doesn't deserve to be.

As soon as I saw Jay's face in the thumbnail I muttered "oh no" under my breath
Edit (and spoilers): I saw it and had a good time. The callbacks mostly felt like a greatest-hits reel, which to be honest I was okay with. CGI Ian Holm annoyed me because it would have made no difference if they'd cast another actor, and the "get away from her" line made me groan a bit but was somewhat saved by the delivery. The Engineer-Newborn thing at the end was fine, if somewhat predictable (it was also a direct callback to Prometheus where Noomi Rapace has a C-section to take the squid-thing out of her womb). I like the characters, visuals, and effects enough to where that stuff on the whole didn't bother me in the theatre, although whether it'll hold up on repeat viewings I don't know.
It would have been nice if it had tried to be its own thing a bit more; they had all the ingredients there. I guess the film could be seen as wasted potential. Maybe they'll put that right in the sequel, if there is one.
