Luke, great to see your review of Montreal. Canada is a Country I love, its a Country that when I first visited exceeded my expectations. Looking forward to your other reviews of Canadian Cities. Thank you Luke. God bless Steve
Great video! I love Montréal so much. Just back from my second holiday and enjoyed so much delicious food! Love Verdun Beach restaurant and Vallier on McGill street!
Hey Luke, I just wanna sincerely thank you for the Montreal food recommendations!! My family and I really enjoyed the fresh bagels at St. Viateur and Snowdon Deli!!! Best value food ever!!!!!! Just one thing about the bagel shop though... the staff didn't seem very friendly but who cares.... we got 6 hot sesame bagels for just $7.15!! I really enjoyed the dining experience at Snowdon as it wasn't busy around 10am... the old lady server was so sweet and shared her story of the Jewish English-speaking community too!!
People pronounce it "baygel" because of the 1 consonant "g" following the vowel "g". People would pronounce it the way you pronounce if the word is spelled "baggel". Of course there are exceptions in the english language
Regional pronunciation is part of the regional accent. Across Canada there are a wide range of regional accents, if you thought he said bagel in a funny way you'll have a similar reaction to the various Newfounland accents which are among the most distinct varieties of English accent in the country.
maybe he's applying the french grammar pronunciation rules. i've heard UK people pronounce microwave as "mee"crowauve. I'd be curious to hear if they also pronounce microplasttic as "mee"croplastic. I'm curious with the pronunciation of the "ch" in chair, vs "ch" in chiropractor.
Hi Luke, I didn't know you are from Canada, you look very European, I just started watching your videos and I like them, and I also like street food, you look like a nice person, greetings from 🇦🇱🇦🇱
1) Snowdon Deli vs Schwartz is controversial, and I'm really happy you highlighted both despite preferring Snowdon. In my opinion, Schwartz's meat has a better lean/fat ratio and is more heavily spiced. However, Snowdon's restaurant is less touristy and more "authentic" Jewish Deli style, in the sense that it's filled with lots of Jewish families enjoying lunch. 2) The fake "Din(g) Tai Fung" (with an extra g) operates our of Markham, near Toronto. It's owned by our family friend, and it's one of my favourite restaurants in the city. That said, I'd love to have the OG Din Tai Fung in Canada.
Im happy Sammi and soup dumpling shines a little more since a year or two on RUclips food tour because its soooo good best dumplings / sha long bao in the city !!!
Luke you got it right going to Gaspesie to have shrimp poutine!! THANK YOU for not promoting the bland, not worth-it poutine restaurant in Plateau Mont-Royal that I will not even mention. On the road to Gaspésie there is also a lot of very good small-shack poutines! Enjoy.
In Toronto the dumpling restaurant is called DING TAI FUNG - interesting story though. I've always wanted to visit Gaspesie. Your footage is so beautiful!
The saffron-garlic mayo with the Bouillabaisse is called Rouille (means rust in English because of the colour). It is indeed meant to be put on the croutons.
Welcome home! I moved to Montreal as a kid when I first immigrated to Canada. I am now in Toronto and I miss MTL. I know how you love great quality food having followed you for a while, I want to recommend you try Damas in Montreal. It is the BEST Middle Eastern restaurant in the city and really worth it. I enjoy eating and drinking at the Burgundy Lion or Liverpool House which are located right across one another next door to Joe Beef. Au Pied Du Cochon is another must try, I havent been in over 10 years but it is a quintessential Montreal culinary institution. I hope you have a great time, ps I wrote this before watching the video so I am sorry if you already tried these spots in the vid. I couldn't contain my excitement xD.
Luke , the “mayonnaise” with your bouillabaisse was an aioli commonly served with it in the south of France. It’s called rouille and is based on garlic, breadcrumbs, red peppers and olive oil .
Hey Luke thank you for showing us the other side of Quebec and i love the video. Can you pls pls tell us more re the tour that you guys did and where did you guys stayed?
Hi Luke! I have tried smoked meat sandwiches at different restaurants in Montreal, and they all taste quite similar with little difference. I suspect they are all supplied by the same smoked meat vendor. Nevertheless, every time I visit Montreal, I always make sure to have at least one; I love this delicacy so much!
1st time to hear about Delisnowdon. Will definitely go to try. I also have recommendations for you, Luke, Smoke Meat Pete (283 1er Rue, L'Île-Perrot, Quebec J7V 5A1) - The Best smoke meat i ever had, my opinion. For soupe dumplings, have you ever been to Fu Chun Soupe Dumpling ? (it is at 1978 Blvd. De Maisonneuve Ouest, Montreal, Quebec H3H 1K5). This is Shanghai's style soupe dumpling. I hope you like them, too.
Love it been planning to visit Montreal this will help me navigating the street food - thank's Luke! Let me know if you plan to visit Toronto would love to host you and take you to some authentic Pakistani and Indian restaurants in Mississauga :)
It's at Schwartz that I discovered that I had a food allergy. Don't get me wrong almost 20 years ago, I went there and got a Montréal Smoke meat sandwiches with a side of cherry coke? and then I started suffering with a rash, nauseous, trouble to breath, lethargic. I'm so gutted because I REALLY enjoyed that sandwich, it had an amazing taste!
You nailed it. The 2 best places to eat Smoked meat are indeed Snowdon Del & Schwartz’s. But, eating smoked meat on anything but rye? Blasphemy! PS bagel is absolutely pronounced with a hard A 😂🤦🏼♀️
I think the Trini and Jamaican food alone pushes Toronto over Montreal. Southeast and South Asian food is also miles ahead in Toronto vs anywhere in Canada. Just that combination is like the top food in the world for me. Plus Toronto is the testing ground for all of the famous Asian brands when the expand to they West. Everything from Uncle Testu to Hot Star Taiwanese chicken launched in Toronto first.
There is so much more to food in Quebec than poutine, bagels and smoked meat. Those prawns at Brise Bise are precooked and frozen, not fresh. Pretty sure the shrimp for that poutine are too. There is much better.
I guess I’ve been saying Montreal wrong all along. I say Mon-treal (like Mahn-treal) but he says Mun-treal (like Muhn-treal). He must be right since he’s Canadian and used to live there. Whereas from the US.
Luke I have to agree with you on this one. Montreal does have the best cuisine in all of 🇨🇦. The French influence in that part of Quebec can really be seen. Poutine is my favorite Canadian dish. I had a Canadian friend years ago got me Montreal Smoked meat and it is on another level. Plus you can speak French lol. Some parts of Montreal will make you think your in 🇫🇷. Great videos Luke!!
how can you talk about Montreal smoked meat and not talk about Dunns?! Dunn’s is BY FAR the best smoked meat in the city. Around for almost 100 years and absolutely legendary. You need to go there next!
What ever they say it in the US or even Canada, it was invented by the Jewish communities of Poland. The correct spelling is in Yiddish and it’s bajgiel!
@@trevorlafave 💯 Anytime anyone inserts NYC bagels in the conversation, I know they haven’t tried a Montreal bagel. NYC bagels are objectively inferior in every way. I’d rather have a French baguette if I want high quality fluffy bread with a good crust.
Honestly, one of my favorite episodes. Thanks Luke.
Thank you so much!

Too funny, was just composing a similar response in my head when I came across your post. Pretty basic English rule to make the pronunciation Bay-gel.
Regional pronunciation is part of the regional accent. Across Canada there are a wide range of regional accents, if you thought he said bagel in a funny way you'll have a similar reaction to the various Newfounland accents which are among the most distinct varieties of English accent in the country.

Montreal has some of the best cuisine on the continent but for some reason it is still more famous for bagels, poutine and smoked meat.
No. It's bay-gel. Unfortunately, it's not transliterated from Yiddish well in North America. In England they spell it beigel, which is more accurate.
