I found it is really good to apply plumber's PTFE tape to the threads of the bleed nipple, a) it stops the nipple pulling air into the system when the nipple is cracked and b) the PTFE tape stops galvanic corrosion between the steel nipple and the aluminium calliper so it is a lot easier to crack open after it has been subjected to a few years of salted roads.
You're right, that works... I've mainly used that on really old calipers where the female thread in the casting is worn... but I find stainless bleed valves are a great upgrade if you do ride in the salt... and something else little known, is the critical importance of those tiny rubber caps to keep the salt out of the hole!
Great video. You make everything look so easy as well as informative. Love that Sportster and can't wait to hear it run. Merry Christmas to you and Penny. Frank from Florida.
Hey Frank, great to hear from you Sir, glad you're enjoying the project, looking forward to Friday for the fire up... take care and have a peaceful, happy holidays!
As always, Del, a very pristine project close to being ticked off of the list, looks like a showroom bike. Wishing you and Penny a very Happy Christmas.
Thank you Brian, really appreciate your kind words of support.. Sad the project is rolling to a close, but proud of what we've made.. Have a great Christmas too and stay safe mate. D&Px
Looking great Del. Ceramic coating is defiantly the way to go mate, I have coated my Sport Glide and it makes cleaning it sooooo much easier . I then use a spray on rinse off sealant on every wash. That way the sealant gets into every nook & cranny where fingers cant reach. If you have never used a spray on rinse off sealant let me know and I will send you a link to one of my videos, just so easy to apply.
Thanks so much for the tip buddy.. im going to coat my Softail to start with as i ride that in all weathers, this one won;t be getting wet if i can help it.. but if the finish it leaves is better then now then ill do this too just for good measure. ! I like the idea of spray on protection too, so ill let you know for sure. !
I like how you checked the clearance on the brake line with the feeler gauge. I thought it looked tight too. Great idea on the ceramic coating. It seems to be all the rage in car detailing over here in the states. It should do a great job keeping the glitter on that jewel of a bike you and Penny have created. Amazing results that you should both be very proud of. It's an honor to watch your work ! Very Merry Christmas to you both. I hope you can enjoy a little time off for the holidays. ❤👍👍
Thank you so much for your kind words as always Rick, I was a little concerned about the hose, it touches initially, which I was worried about long term, so just managed to flex the banjo end open a fraction to give me the clearance... just the way it goes with custom made parts! We're going to give the ceramic coat a trial run on my Softail as it's a plain ol' factory bike and see how it works, but more importantly, see how it affects the shine, or if the product dulls the finish, and if it's all good I'll apply it to the project bike... Have a great Christmas holidays, but we will be back on Friday with the Sportster fire up, hope you'll enjoy it! Take care, D&Px
All the years I replaced and bled brakes I never did it reverse pumping the fluid through the calipers and up to the reservoir.....I like it!...I just changed the fluid in the Heritage with a vacuum pump because the bike has A.B.S. Good video Del...Thanks
Great video Del & Penny. Looking good mate, job well done. Looking forward to the fire up and the ceramic coating, Penny and you enjoy the last part of your week and stay safe. Cheers
Thanks mate👍... almost there now aye.. only the fire up to go then im ready for a ride.. i also have enough footage to make a time-lapse video of the original engine build.. thought that may make a great finale vide once it's all done. ! Have a great week and stay safe too.. Christmas in the sunshine sounds odd to us.. but right now id settle for that in return for snow and road salt right now..lol!
Sorry about the snow, we don't see much here in So. California, unless we head up into the local mountains. Hopefully weather will improve and you don't have to wait too long to go for a ride. Although the ceramic coating might be a good thing to do in the meantime.
Thanks buddy, I always envy those who don't get snow, it's a novelty for a day and then it isn't funny any more lol The worst part of it is the salt slurry and the damage it does to your bikes and cars! Take care and ride safe.
Hel hoses are great but have you ever considered doing a "how to" video of making your own hoses & cables? I've done hoses once but it took a couple of attempts to get it right to my satisfaction. Old fashioned cables are easier but only 'coz I've done them a lot more often!
I visited the guys at Wemoto a few years ago and watched them making the HEL hoses.. they have a very specialised piece of equipment for crimping the banjos in, and im not sure i could do that to the same standard... but yeah, granted i love to have a good go at all things.. so maybe in the future ill look into that, thanks for the nudge.
Closer and closer!! I really like that brake syringe thingamabob! Just a minute or two and your brake levers are harder than Chinese 'rithmatic! And no worries on the paint with the Dot 5! And may I offer up an early Ho Ho Ho!!!
Ho Ho indeed sir.. and the same to you.. and yes also, not long now.. ill be hitting the start button aon Friday ready for ther weekend video..(that's if anyone will be watching between the turkey and sprouts and reruns of The Great Escape..! Have a great week and stay safe aye..D&Pxx
@@Moonfleet41 I am ready to hear that motor make up and realize that it has grown considerably in size and purdy-ness since the last time it tasted gasoline!
Mate was working on a bike that had a bad brake feel. Told them to reverse bleed it as the way they were doing now wasn't working and what's the harm, solid brakes first pull, only got better when leaving the brake pulled overnight.
Ah, a bygone era of a brake line simply going from a lever to a caliper, sigh. Mine disappear into the blackness deep in the centre of the bike and go to junction blocks, computer sensors, proportioning valve bodies, some pistons in front calipers but not others, lol
This indeed is why I love the simplicity of old vehicles, no wizardry and no hocus pocus... just nuts and bolts! Have a wonderful Christmas buddy, see you on Friday for the fire up video!
Great video Del and wise words. Everybody leads in different ways but the best captains lead by example. “James Ward-Prowse. The HD project is nearing the end and the ceramic coating will enhance the paint and other areas.
So I'm led to believe, I'm looking forward to firing it up first and am going to test the ceramic coat on the Softail to see how if affects the finish before I do it to the show bike... we're thinking of doing a time lapse video of the engine build from 2yrs ago as a finale... perhaps it'll be a good way to sign off the project! Enjoy the Christmas holidays and thanks for your kind support, D&Px
