Of course this is an enormously popular tune, and has already appeared to virtually all listeners as a composition that sought to embody a range of complexity and depth which we associate with the finest classical music. But it’s always remained close to that ambition yet not quite reaching it. Many pianists, including exceptional performers and arrangers, have tried to transcribe it for piano as a serious composition, not a mere pop song. But none have been able to depart from the raucous pop performance of Queen and still preserve the depth of the ambition of Freddy Mercury. Until now. I’m not sure why this works so well as a serious composition, but it does. Maybe it’s the evenness of the tempo? The smoothness of the transitions? I’m not sure. But this works on many levels. Bravo!
