I remember watching this 2 years ago when I started sewing and thought omg Id never be able to make this and here I am cutting it out and refreshing my memory with this video again x
Oh no...it's not just you who thinks the pattern instructions were difficult. I found them maddening. Once I slogged thru and made the pattern I saw how easy it is to put together, but 'trusting the instructions' was extremely frustrating. I find this on all Pattern Fantastique patterns. I LOVE LOVE her designs, I just really dread her instructions. I wish she would run her instructions by sewists who aren't afraid of giving useful feedback. The instructions ARE frustrating. The dress itself is not difficult to sew. I recommend you toss the instructions and just put the dress together in the way you know how.
Oh my gosh. I have never gotten those tube things to work and someone told me to watch you …and thank you!! Now I know the sewn tube has to be closed at one end 😂 I have used the metal wire with the hook at one end for 32 years. But I have felt I needed to figure those tubes out from pure stubbornness. Thank you! And your dress is gorgeous. 🙌🏼
Beautiful dress colour really suits you, thanks for your vlog, love all of them. I am 56 , so it’s lovely having someone of z similar age to relate to xx
Thank you so much! That's how I felt when I first started looking at sewing videos, everyone at that time was younger and I kept looking for someone my age - in the end in a fit of madness I decided to give it a try myself 😀
I love your brilliant vali - Thank you for the review - Im a similar size and am so grateful for the sizing advice. I noticed that the dress was very flattering fir at the upper back on you. I have this pattern and have been in two minds about making it. You have inspired me - just need some cool fabric- I’m a 60s child - peace and love man 😎🥰🙏👌
The bright blue’s in the stripes really make the orange/rust colours pop and they are a great compliment to your colouring! Love the dress, looks very comfortable. I’m with you on the gathering - it’s one of my pet sewing hates too lol. I’ve also used my overlocker but mostly I avoid gathers haha. If I were to make this I might be tempted to just make a double layer yoke rather than worry about the facings - that would eliminate the faff with the top stitching😉
Love the dress! The ideas shared for turning narrow tubes of fabric were nice and I appreciated the demo! I have fabric turning tubes… never understood how to use those. Now I do:)
I love your dress. I have just discovered a really easy n super effective way of managing a curved hem. Using an over locker turn up the differential and overlock the hem then sew it up on the sewing machine it was amazing super quick and not a pucker in sight. 🙌❤️💙💜
Very 70s for sure. The fabric is gorgeous and really suits you - I think the bright blue gives it a bit of wow factor. Absolutely with you on Prym tube turners, they're the only way I can do the damn things! As an Android user I've only just downloaded Clubhouse but if I remember tomorrow I'll try your link and see (or rather hear) what it's all about 🙂
This is such a good one! As far as the colors not being 'right', by using the rusty colors for the yolk next to your face, it works perfectly. And the rest is such a pretty combo. Love the stripes going vertical for the main dress and horizontal for the sleeves and yolks. You have such an eye for that kind of thing. Enjoy it! 😊
Your dress is beautiful Alex! As soon as you appeared on camera I was in awe- those colours! So gorgeous on you. You'll be basking in more compliments than you know what to do with. '70's! Such a special decade for me :) I graduated high school in 1973, heading off to university. My '20's were spent in the '70s :) I laughed out loud when you commented about the thumping on the roof, "Magpies having a marital moment." I didn't know what that meant....an argument? rubbing vents? Too funny! Another great video and thank you for coming in on Friday in the middle of your busy period :)
Love the dress on you - fabric is stunning. Soo identify with what you said about stashing fabric. I currently have three that I love and can’t make my mind up what to do with them!
Turning little tubes are such a pain. I really like the idea of your tubes and sticks. It seems so helpful. Also, I live gathering fabric on my serger. It’s such a time saver.
I can't believe I haven't done it before, complete game changer. I suspect you could cobble something together with a standard straw and a pokey thing, but the prym sticks are fairly easy to find 😂
Love it! The line drawings didn't do much for me but it looks fantastic on you! I also tend to get a bit of paralysis when I have a fabric I really love and then it just sits there on the shelf.
You look like Anni-Frid from Abba!!! Gorgeous!!! I love love the fabric choice. I brought that pattern a month ago too...hoping to sew this weekend, just been too busy of late - lost a bit of my sewing mojo tbh. Will be there on Sunday for the clubhouse session as I have missed them! Enjoy wafting around the supermarket with Abba songs ringing in your ears! xx
😂 I adored Abba when I was a girl too, but they've been taken over by my daughter who insisted I watch Mama Mia recently and that was toooo much for me. I have a high tolerance for rubbish tv, but I found my limit 😂. We've missed you on Sundays, funny how often we buy the same patterns!
Love the dress! I do a zigzag stitch over a length of dental floss to gather. You end up with a very even gather due to the zigzag. Don’t forget to remove the dental floss once you’re done. Also, I don’t recommend the flavored dental floss. 😂
I have to try this gathering method with the serger for one of those big tiered skirts. It's like finishing and gathering all at once. I also want to try the dental floss technique someone mentioned below. I'm surprised the dress is faced instead of just 2 layers for the yoke. I would probably do that so it's smoother inside at the top of the gathers. It looks really great.
Love your dress, very comfy and not overly roomy. Would it have been easier to line the yokes instead of using facings? Thanks for the point turner how to, I need to order some.
I love your version of the Vali! It looks amazing on you…those colors are so flattering on you. I have made the Vali in a top and love it. I made the deeper neckline and it is way too deep even with the extra tie to close it up. I think you made a good call with cutting your fabric on the cross grain. I used grosgrain ribbon for my ties. I accidentally threw away the pattern piece for the ties😂. I’m definitely going to find that tube turning kit that you mentioned. It sounds great!
@@AlexJudgeSews Yes I have😀. I’ve posted a review video on YT ruclips.net/video/1OLCRiTvTJ4/видео.html and also posted a pic on my IG @MichelleSewsAgain
Hi Alex, I'm adoring this dress 😍😍😍...such a lovely relaxed style and definitely seventies 👍✌️. When this heatwave comes tomorrow, it's going to be a life saver isn't it, and you'll look cool as a cucumber 😁👌💝😘
Love that dress. I had something very similar in the 70’s. Thanks for the tip about the upper bust measurement. I’m not great at reading instructions. The danger of have sewn for a long time you can make assumptions. Love the turning tool thingee, so easy. A mental straw for a larger tie, maybe. What a pity the pattern is a PDF only. Stuff the colour rules - that dress looks stunning on you. Janey in NZ
Lovely vlog Alex. I received double gauze in the June SewHayleyJane box. I haven’t used this fabric before. Any recommendations for a dress pattern ( with pockets) ?
Love the kaftan Alex. I’ve looked at that pattern a few times and been very tempted. I was just concerned that at 5’2 it might swamp me. That fabric is gorgeous, the colours omg 😍.
You could always shorten it? I’m completely height blind, I never notice if people are tall or short so don’t get the swamping thing ( this is just as well as my Husband isn’t the tallest 😁)

I cannot agree more 😀🙏🙌😘

You are so welcome! 😘
Everything about that dress looks great on you! I believe ALL those colors are fantastic on you.
Thank you so much ❤️❤️
Okay, another sewing tool that I need now. That loop turner is magic!!

Awesome dress on you love the colours.
Thank you ❤️❤️
Thank you for this. About to cut out the pdf and exactly the same concerns about the sizing. That's really helped.
The dress is beautiful. You chose the perfect fabric.
Absolutely brilliant dress 👗 🧡🧡🧡🧡 I want to totally copy you 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Do it 😘

Thanks Leanne, you’re right a double yoke would make more sense 👍🏻😘

I'm glad I could help 💜
I love, love, love the colors in that dress. It looks fantastic on you.
Thank you 🥰
That fabric is awesome. Looooove the colours, even the pops of electric blue. 💕
Thank you, I thought it might be ‘allowed’ if it’s in with other colours 😁😘
Fabulous dress Alex.

I love the dress and the fabric is beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Thanks Alex. Great info about the pattern and the fabric. This may be my new bathing suit cover up.
Glad it was helpful!
This dress looks so comfy. Love the fabric, love the design. This must become one of your favourites
Thank you, we're due hot weather over the next few days and I think it'll be invaluable 💚💜

Thanks Marlene, as daft as it may be I'm thrilled that you noticed I tried to put the 'right' colours closer to my face 😘💚
It’s fabulous. The stripes make that dress look awesome. You have a great eye X
Thank you ❤️❤️
Lovely...such comfort and so classy...great choice..great look.

I bet being in your 20s during the 70s was a lot of fun 😁. I’ll leave the marital moment up to your imagination Kathleen 😉

Stunning retro vibe. Suits you Alex..

Love your "off piste" moments
One day I'll follow the instructions to the letter 😂😘

Oooh I’ve heard of that, I’m going to try to remember next time 👍🏻👍🏻❤️
This is a great tip!
LOVE that dress and fabric, looks gorgeous on you x
Thank you so much!
Really love the pattern and your fabric. If only I could put on long sleeves I could wear it.
You can do it! There's no reason why you couldn't add some length to the sleeve pattern - you've given me an idea 😀💛
That dress looks fabulous on you!
Thank you 😘
Interesting your remark on gathering, I'm never satisfied with my gathering (that's after 44 yes sewing😞) It looks OK on the completed garment.
Yeah, not my favourite sewing task 😄❤
I have to try this gathering method with the serger for one of those big tiered skirts. It's like finishing and gathering all at once. Ooh good idea, the band at the centre front is folded over, but I'm sure with a bit of thought it could be easily done and would be a nicer finish 👍💜
Love your dress, very comfy and not overly roomy. Would it have been easier to line the yokes instead of using facings? Thanks for the point turner how to, I need to order some.
Yes, it absolutely would, that’s what I’d do if I were making another ❤️❤️❤️

Thanks Janey That's exactly why I mentioned the upper bust thing, because I often just whizz off thinking I don't need to read the instructions 😀.
😀
Lovely vlog Alex. I received double gauze in the June SewHayleyJane box. I haven’t used this fabric before. Any recommendations for a dress pattern ( with pockets) ?
70s, definitely 70s! The colors suit you whether or not you’re supposed to use them. 😉

Hi Alex. Love your vlogs ,I've been trying to access the clubhouse site but unsure how to, any help would be appreciated.
Love the kaftan Alex. I’ve looked at that pattern a few times and been very tempted. I was just concerned that at 5’2 it might swamp me. That fabric is gorgeous, the colours omg 😍.
