- The EU imposed sanctions against Moscow as a response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But loopholes raise doubts about whether these are working.
There is evidence that dual-use items that can also be used for military purposes are reaching Russia - from microelectronics, to replacement parts for related industries, to cars and weapons. How can this be happening in spite of sanctions? Where are the loopholes? To find out, DW reporter Miodrag Soric went to Georgia, a Western-oriented country that officially supports the imposed sanctions. Georgia is also a close neighbor of Russia, with all the economic ties and geopolitical dependencies that that implies. Allegedly, large amounts of exports continue to go to Russia via countries such as Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia. How do they get there? How can this be stopped? Miodrag Soric searches for clues.

Not only are sanctions on Russia failing, these sanctions are making the EU irrelevant to all Eurasia. Once large regions of the world realise they can live perfectly without trade with Europe, without earning or using the Euro, Europe will lose all influence and relevance to them. Europe's sanction on Russia is actual Europe sanctioning itself, which might have been worthwhile if it caused Russia to collapse and Ukraine to win. But Russia is booming, Ukraine is failing, and Europe has to take all pain of these sanctions. A totally self-inflicted catastrophe.

Meanwhile, the EU still buys Russian oil, and the US continues to buy Russian fertilizer. But they somehow feel that their money does not fund Russia's war; however, other countries that purchase Russian goods do. Hypocrisy in action.

Russia shares borders with large number of small countries, when the West demanded those insignificant countries to follow their geopolitics, that's a dead end and irresponsible. We close the export directly to Russia but we rise the export to 700 % to friendly countries of Russia and all know what happens. This is showing that the single thing what matters is MONEY.

The only one feeling the pain is us Europeans. These sanctions are beyond pointless.
Russia has a huge land and maritime border with its neighbors. In reality, sanctions can only increase the transaction cost or reduce the total trade volume. It won't stop Russia from getting the material and goods it needs. There is no way to enforce it on the ground, in the air, and at the sea.

Just like Ukrainians want to feed their families and live without being bombed on the daily. But that's a luxury when your neighbor is a pyscho. All those people in Georgia will be better off eventually too, once the Ruzzia situation is handled to the end. They can finally kick the rest of the Russian troops out of their land too.
The sanctions still increase costs for Russia, since it needs to pay people to transport goods over the border. And it would be easy to counter these loopholes by limiting export volumes to countries neighboring Russia to 2021 levels.

Oh, are EU companies too dumb to understand the cause of spike in export rates, right after the war started and sanctions began to apply? If they are really concerned about feeding Russia with goods, why don't they stop the source, but the middle man?
@@l3ngmashup314 The point of the sanctions is not that we should not sell anything to the Russians, but that the Russians should not be able to sell anything and thus their income should be reduced. EU export sanctions only apply to products that help Russia to increase its profits. Money doesn't care about stupid EU bureaucracy, companies will find a way to continue trading with the Russians. Why would they give up profits?

South Africa was probably the most sanctioned country in the world in the 1970's and 80's. Yet with a relatively small industrial base, it built up a huge arms industry, certainly with some outside help. Having lived through this period, sanctions were really just an irritation, and not what the sanctioners hoped for. There will always be sanctions busters, out to make a quick buck.

i can officially tell you that my Greek friends who are in the oil shipping industry are carrying russia oil all over from asia to europe to north america . Sanction not only fail but they made other countries think and take into consideration future economic attack to them.. like China and others . All this has made other countries stronger ,not just from military but by economic protection against the West.
It's so true. EU imported a lot Russian oil last year before their sanctions got effective. Lol and in media, how against are they? Just liars.
But are the Russians getting paid beyond the price caps? Because if not, then yes, the EU still pays more for their oil and gas than before but Russian profits are still small. Sure, the EU is paying out the arse to intermediary countries, but that doesn't mean that the sanctions are ineffective.

People always find the way to make a living. I remember like in 1980s we smuggled liquor from Poland to Sweden, Denmark and Norway, very good money. If you think that law abiding norsemen didn’t appreciate our hard work your are mistaken. Bottle in Poland cost about 80 cents US in that time , we get 100 krona for it, a little over 7$ us. After all necessary bribes and expenses we get 5x return on our investment each ferry trip. The best time of my life, I put myself through university doing that.
I bought myself german beer recently here in Moscow. It was marked as imported from Poland.

I was in Russia last month, all the American and European brands are still there. Most of them are under a different name. Sanctions are mainly a diplomatic tool. Socially or economically it never had the intended effect.

I come from Russia and I wanna tell you how you work in state authorities. As soon as the United States imposes sanctions, our government immediately begins, under these circumstances, picking out everything from people and divide it among themselves.
Recently, some sanctions have been imposed on one of our stock exchanges that trades foreign securities. The American side`s provided 3 months for ordinary people to withdraw their money. At the same time Russian government`s blocked all the citizens’ money at once. They`ve even blocked Chinese and Russian shares. I guess every time new sanctions are introduced, our officials have a holiday. They set the turkey on the table and sing the US national anthem cause they`ve got a reason to rob their citizens once again. But in case you`re indignant, then you may be declared a foreign spy.

There is already railway line from Russia to Azerbaijan and then to Iran. From the Port of Chabahar (Iran) all Russian oil and products are sent to India, Africa and the rest of the world. Then in June 2022 the Trans-Caspian railway line was opened from Ningxia City (China) to Iran. All of these trade routes were so massive that Western sanctions proved to be failure.
All while EU signing a "gas deal" with Azerbaijan and their imports from Russia quadruple, far exceeding the country's own consumption. Ironically, this deal was supposed to replace Russian imports.

@@Vijay_guptaji I mean Europe has been treating world problems like it it's problems, considering how many millions of refugees we have taken which largely has just disrupted our societies more. Then providing aid and human rights relief to hundreds of countries. Tackling global warming more than other nations, which will have it's most serious impacts in poorer regions of the world.
It seems like everyone expects Europe to spend as much time on the rest of the world as it does on it's internal matters, yet this expectation isn't there for China, Russia, India etc. or any other nation.
I like how the reporter says that Georgia "still has close economic tires with Russia". Well, Georgia has the border with Russia. It definitely makes sense to have "close economic relations", instead of building walls, like the one Berlin had. Also I'd recommend to DW, instead of equating Europe and the EU, to study geography better.
They should say it is still independent from Russia. After losing a war in 2008 and possibility of full annexation.
Finland shares a long border with Russia but they support the sanctions, and just joined NATO. Simply sharing a border doesn't mean that you must have close economic ties. The change isn't going to be fast, especially given the political situation in Georgia, but it's definitely possible.

Relations were profitable for both politically and economically. Now due to what you have mention they can dissapear from the map again. The only thing sanctions have done is push BRICS into seriously considering launching an alternate currency and payment system. The short-term effect is gain for US and high prices for Europe, but in the longer term, other countries will put being independent of US/EU as part of their strategies.

I was at the Georgian-Russian border near Stepantsminda twice. Once in 2019, once in Dec 2022. Big line of trucks both times, but much longer in 2022. The largest factor was contributing to it was apparently the increased security following Ukraine's suicide bombing of the Kerch bridge.
Also, I've been to Russia four times, including twice since the war started. No change in living conditions whatsoever, and essentially all Western products are still available.

I’m an EU citizen and living in America, travelled to Russia many times. Americans and EU can’t imagine there is an other world than theirs and especially out of their control and dominance. I have to say in spite of a detailed coverage of this EUs effort to curtail Russia's economic interests on it's Eurasian perimeter. It is artless to expect it's small neighbors to harm their own negligible economies to give up cross border trade with no alternative opportunities to compensate for that. Brandishing EU flag doesn't address damage sustained by those countries and an impact on balance of payments. One could argue a loss of access by a dainty state like Georgia to Russia's market may totally crash it's tiny economy. The rest of the pack are no different with their economic growth tightly underpinned by it's exchanges with Russia. Further more Russia's geographic proximity couldn't be preponderated by EU membership ( an arcane prospect) to wean these countries dependency on it's big neighbor.

These countries are not asked to stop their usual trade with Russia but not to help other countries circumvent the sanctions and by allowing more and more transit of foreign goods through their territories, what they are doing is benefitting from sanctions.
We forgot about Visa/Mastercard turn off in Russia. So, now a lot of Russians have a bank account in ex soviet country and transfers its money to these banks to pay abroad. That strongly increases economic relations between Russia and ex Soviet countries.
