- In this video, we will discuss how to prevent dampness in your home when building in Ghana. Dampness is a common problem in many buildings, especially in tropical climates like Ghana, where high humidity and heavy rainfall can cause moisture to seep into the walls and floors of your home.

The use of damp proof membrane in construction is regulated by British Standards, which state that the sheet should be at least 1200 gauge (or 300 micrometres). Using a thinner sheet could mean your building doesn't comply with regulations, and it can be a costly fix, so 1200 is always recommended
Most damp proof wall membranes are made from HDPE and have a high compressive strength and a long life expectancy (over 30 years).
@blackentreneau2564 interesting. Can damp ever by treated afterwards ?
Well explained u just gained a follower
Thank you
I always wondered why it wasn't done this way. Great video
Thank you
Very important to treat dpm at foundation level
I agree
Damp proofing is very important, I just saw a video where someone didn't do it and they are looking to fix the problem. I am trying to decide whether to do it like in this video or to apply a damp proofing strip under the first blocks and then use damp proofing paint on the sides...
Damp proof is really important when building. When it isn't done, one could spend a lot to fix dampen walls
Well executed, good job.
Thank you
This polyethylene layer deteriorates with time
Hence, using this method alone doesn’t prevent damp rise
It is advisable to use rich concrete for the foundation or DPM, etc
It depends on the Thickness of the DPM that is used. There are different thicknesses. A rich concrete doesn't solve the issue of damp if right measures are not put in place.
It is clear that have some knowledge of the fundamentals of dampproofing, but you have a lot to learn, I can tell you're not fully experienced, but keep up the good work
Thank you
This plastic sheet, if it's the type used for drying maize, It'll decompose pretty quickly. Real damp proof membranes are designed to withstand that. They are more durable. I bought some and they are much tougher and thicker
I always fear that the walls of the building might not bond to the ground well (with the dpm) in the trenches and in the event of a tremor the building could shift- Could this be an issue?
It depends on the type that is used. There are quality heavy ones and the normal types.
Not really. The weight of the concrete and blocks are enough to sit on the soil so this shouldn't be an issue
@@l.e.sparklesfkaelliesparkl5875 yes, that's why it's important to also have pillars
Indeed! Thanks for your responses
Hi,
I have been following you since your first video. You have so much knowledge in construction and you always provide good information and advice which is appreciated. I am planning to buy land and build a house in Ghana in the near future. I would appreciate your contact details so I can get help with building the house and damp proofing the foundation.
My dream is to build a house on a hillside with a view. I am wondering if you can advise which areas in Accra is best for that and perhaps advise on companies that can help with buying land?. I have through research found Aburi to be hillside land but the prices are unreasonable. I am grateful for any advice I get.
Hi and thank you very much for your comment. I sure would be more than glad to assist with your building when you're ready. Regarding land on a hillside, i know of one location which currently has lands for sale. My contact number is +233547658523 on WhatsApp. I will be looking forward to hearing from you
@@IshmealLamptey Thanks for the reply, I will be in touch soon. Are you located in Accra?.
Thanks for the information, I've learnt alot....may I know what thickness of foundation strip concrete you cast in the trench for the plinth wall to sit on?
We use a thickness of 6" minimum or more depending on the situation on the ground
Do you advise to use the damp proof paint after after adequately and thoroughly applying laying them in the trenches and on top after backfilling?
Yes, it is best use Bitumen/damp proof paint on the footings, Both inside and outside all the way to the foundation concrete.
Thanks for the info
You're very welcome
I just watched your video about the dpm..my question is this.. Can i use the water proof cement with the foundation concrete..?
Yes you certainly can especially at places which are waterlogged
How do I know the quantity needed for the project soo I don’t buy more than enough
Once you know the measurements of the building, you should be able to tell. The dmp comes in different sizes, so you'll have to inquire about that also.
Is waterproof cement ever added to the concrete mix when the blocks are being molded?
No, they don't. Rather they add to the concrete and mortar for the foundation
@@IshmealLamptey Excellent. Thanks!
Is it advisable to use waterproof cement when casting the concrete
It is usually advisable when you are working at waterlogged locations but for places that are not, it isn't mandatory unless you prefer to do so.
How do you 'attach' the dpm to the walls (sides) of the foundation walls?
You can nail them or bring them up and place blocks on them as it was done in the video
Awesome
Can this be used under isolated footings pillars underground in swampy areas please?????
I can't give advice to that as i do not know how the situation is. I will recommend you seek advice from a professional who can assess the situation and advise accordingly.
Hello Ishmael, I am building in Ghana from the US and my mason has no clue about the damp proofing other than the additive to the cement. So before he pours the concrete in the trenches I need to figure out figure out where I can purchase the damp proofing materials and how to deliver it to the site. I am building in Aburi amofrom.
Kindly reach out to me via WhatsApp for more information on it (0547658523)

Great vid
Thank you
Very educational. Thank you.
You're welcome
But there’s no drainage , why haven’t you installed drainage pipes in the trenches?
There is hardly planning for draining.. serious problem.
How is that done? Is it added before the sheet? Or after the sheet?
I always fear that the walls of the building might not bond to the ground well (with the dpm) in the trenches and in the event of a tremor the building could shift
Not really, the weight of the concrete and the blocks are heavy enough to sit on the soil.
@@IshmealLampteyTY!
@@IshmealLamptey please what’s the required thickness for the damp proof membrane?
Name of the damp proof paint you recommend .
Can't recall, but you can get a damp proof paint solution from coral paint
There are quite a few of them, I got one called Aquamuls B60 AE, there is another called Germano B40 and L40. I hope this helps.
@@andrewwilliamson8909can use it if your building is an old building and it’s not plastered yet so it has some green and black on it. But we want to plaster now
Thanks for ur video. I just started my building and just finished casting the trenches of the foundation. I didnt put any damp proof membranes in the trenches before casting..i am now worried..is there any other measures u can advise me on to incorporate after casting the trenches to prevent dampness..thanks a lot
Hi, you don't have to be worried, they can lay the damp proof membrane on the concrete in the trenches before they lay the blocks. Reach out to me on WhatsApp and i will send you contact of a company that has a thicker dpm you can use for that. My WhatsApp is +233547658523
Are we really sure that this prevents dampness in wall. I actually believe it mimize and those not prevent. I prefer painting.
But above all you done well
It doesn't prevent it, it's a control measure for Damp
Is damp a big problem in Ghana?
In some areas, yes, especially places with waterlogged, closer to coastal areas among others
Can I use the same method with my wall? Thanks
Yes you can
Thank You! Ga?@@IshmealLamptey
What's the price?
The prices varies, from size, brand among others
you don't put membrane on the footer. concrete mortar and block will not bind to plastic or a poly substance. your walls will be able to come loose at the footer. I have not seen anybody do such a thing. very dangerous to the structure.
I have been asking for verification for this practice
Please how many dpm can be used for 3bedrooms
Between 3 to 4 rolls depending on the size of the roll
@IshmealLamptey please current how much is for one
@@JusticelukaAcheaw between 300 to 700 cedis depending on the size
