How big can we make Ralfy's remote control?

  • My brother Ralfy uses a remote to start and stop his camera when he's filming for his channel:-
    / ralfystuff
The conductive ink contacts on his remote were causing problems, so I fixed one of his remotes and offered to turn the other one into something a bit bigger. I didn't say HOW big though.
A few things went wrong along the way, but that happens. Initially I thought it wasn't working, but it seems to just put out a single burst of IR code for each press.
Update:- Ralfy loves his new monster-sized remote. It seems to work fine.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
    www.bigclive.co...
This also keeps the channel independent of RUclips's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

A propos of nothing, I've been watching both your and Ralfy's channels for many years. I will never understand how it took me literally years to make the connection between you two. You guys occasionally reference one another and the Isle of Man, but it wasn't until a Christmas or New Year video some time back that I saw you together, spat out my tea and went "no fucking way". You guys really are quite an extraordinary couple of siblings. A whisky expert motorcycle champion archaeologist undertaker and a light engineer electrician technician programmer designer extraordinaire. I don't know why I'm writing this, I guess I just feel you should know there are people out there who really appreciate and admire you guys. Oh, and your video about how you took care of your mother with Alzheimer's moved me to tears. That's all. Best wishes from Belgium

It when somebody, due to physical limitations due to injury/disability/aging/etc, can't hit a button or switch, they wire in a better suited switch or a 3.5mm audio jack for use with existing accessibility switches. • @Derundurel

The problem with mounting it on the lid is that the double-sided tape will let go in time. Gravity helps hold it if it is in the base. I'd have preferred it to be flat on the bottom for this reason. Better yet, mount it on the lid with better fixings!

I put a Telephone clicky (like an early computer) keypad on top, some tactile switches on the side for volume and a stainless steel foot switch for the on off. The on off required two tumbs to operate and solved the problem of hitting the switch by accident. The large box let me run it on C cells instead of the AAA that only lasted a month. I knew a fellow who worked as the lead tech in a Network Operations Center for a Telecom. Near the exit door of the server room were two large buttons of the sort you have there which he called "clown buttons" for obvious reasons. One on the right, which was yellow, opened the door; and one on the left, which set off the Halon fire protections system for the server room. This presented a problem because periodically visitors from the corporate office would come and visit the NOC and after their visit would, upon exiting, sometimes press the wrong button, setting off the fire protection system and cutting the power to the building and filling the room with unbreathable Halon gas forcing everyone in the room to have to leave quickly and stay out until the gas dissipated. Naturally this caused some red faces, either from embarrassment or from anger. Having happened once too often, a solution was found. The red button was encased in a clear plastic box with a spring loaded door on it that makes a piercing sound when opened to deter people from opening the box and pressing the button, unless there is an actual fire. The solution worked well and most people have learned not to open the button box anymore, however, he said that once in a great while someone is still determined to press the big red button undeterred by the screeching door on the box and again fills the room with Halon. C'est la vie. :)

Had a windshield washer tank(plastic) develop a crack and to fix it I used a special kit with an epoxy specifically formulated to bond to the plastic of the tank. Nothing else seemed to get a good bond, but this stuff really seemed to stick with a vengeance. The downside was that it was really more expensive than I could have predicted but at least it worked well.

Years ago I had the idea of making a giant button like this, but with its only purpose being a giant mute button for the TV, to mute the damn commercials that are so annoying. The plan was to use a universal remote circuit board so it could be adjusted for any TV, and the entire perimeter of the case being IR LEDS so aiming was not an issue. I never got around to making it, though.

Easy with a TVBgone keyring as the base. But probably better not to make it too obvious.

The terminals on the switch are designed for both crimp connectors and soldered wires. That is why they have a hole.

It's actually pretty easy to program an arduino to use an IR receiver to scan an IR remote and get its exact protocol, then program it to send any command with that protocol through an IR LED. There's a library on GitHub called IRLib2 that does all the work. It understands every remote I have.
So you can turn anything with a button and a place for an LED into a remote for just about anything that uses an IR remote. Even without the guts of a working remote.

It might be improper wavelength of that red LED that makes it kinda dim inside the buttons. If the lens on the buttons was designed for incandescent bulbs, you should try warm white LEDs in them. I learned this when I tried to replace the bulbs to LEDs inside the turn signals of my father's motorcycle in 2008. No matter how bright and how many yellow or orange LEDs I tried, it was inferior to the original (I think 5W) incandescent bulb. Then I realised I either need clear lens for the turn signals and use orange LEDs, or leave the original lens and use warm white LEDs, because the orange lens acts as a band pass filter, and if the LED wavelength is not perfectly matching with it, it will be very dim. I never had the opportunity to finish the project, because the bike got stolen a few weeks later... It was a GDR made Simson S50.

If you want something that isn't solder that does a solder job... use one of the silver-epoxy repair glues. CHO Bond etc. Not cheap, but well worth the bother for nightmare rework situations.

The original ''clicker' goes way way back to the war days . It wa a thing they used for when they sent out a rece party , they had a series of clicks that both them and the guys in the trenches knew so that when the rece party came back they did not get shot as possible rece parties from the other side . sometimes the sound of a bolt action rifle was mistaken for the clicker with unfortunate consequences

Speaking of a "clicker", my grandma had an old TV remote that had two bells in it with different pitches, so one changed the channel and the other changed the volume or something. Or maybe it switched between VHF and UHF, I can't remember.
I also remember seeing the movie UHF on an old TV, and it was on channel 9, which was a VHF channel.

Great Video BC! I have a 5 button switch remote for a HDMI box so I can use one input to the TV and have 5 inputs with the remote and box. It is built like Ralfy's but with 5 buttons and yes it is stuck down the same way. Matter of fact it is always popping up at the bottom where you can see the board. I have some small project boxes and momentary switches so I see a project in my future thanks to Ralfy's Big Red Button!
Thanks Clive for the video and the ideal of fixing my 5 button Clicker! :-D
    LLAP
P.S. Don't let Fargo from Eureka see this fix, we all know how Fargo likes to push Big Red Buttons! Just saying! LOL

I use to hold an IR remote to my camera to check the LED is working. It seems nowadays it is only working with shitty-cheap camera's. The high brands might filter the IR out to not get a washed-out image on a sunny day.

Yup, that's my thought as well. I used that fact when teaching basic digital photography in the early 90s. They got "homework" to check and it made the pupils feel very "engineery" 😁
I think there are videos on how to remove the filter from a mobile phone camera to "see more", fiddly but possible on most mobiles.

Even the cheap cameras have an IR filter, but it's probably not as tight as more expensive ones. I have a Sony Handycam with Nightshot mode, it physically moves the filter into and out of the optical path. With the filter in place you can still see IR remotes head on. Without the filter you can see the signal hitting nearby surfaces.

20 ma on the LED? Usually they are rated to handle at least 50 ma. And, I've had them successfully operated at 1 A in pulse mode. They were absolutely brilliant but the pulse was so short you couldn't see the light and it had to be detected by a photodiode and fed to a scope.
