Loved this. Your channel just came up in my recommendations and after two videos I've subscribed haha.
Personally, I've been supporting Lewis since I was ten years old (in 2008), but in recent years at least (moreso than when I was too young to do so lol), I've tried my absolute hardest to stay objective about just how great he is. It was pretty clear from the way he matched Fernando Alonso on points (109 each), wins (4 each) and podiums (12 each), and beat him on poles (6-2) as well as finishing higher in the championship due to more second place finishes (5-4), before winning the 2008 Championship by 1 point despite Ferrari winning the Constructors' by 21 points, that Lewis was something pretty special. And that too was clear, as even Fernando has admitted, from the way he was able to win 13 races across the 5 years in a row where his car was slower than Red Bull, and at times Ferrari (and Brawn in 2009 of course) - in 2009, 2011 and 2013, Lewis' car was MUCH slower. He then finally started taking the championships he deserved in 2014 and 2015, and as you say in the video, missed out in 2016 despite more poles, wins and podiums than Rosberg, because of the engine failure from the lead in Malaysia, as well as because he had to start from the back row in China and Belgium, and from tenth in Bahrain, also due to engine problems, while Rosberg didn't have ONE engine problem all year. Rosberg had a four-place grid drop in Austria due to a gearbox issue, but still was still beaten in Q3 by Lewis fair and square.
However, it was 2017 and 2018 where Lewis truly proved beyond any doubt I had that he is among the 5-7 greatest drivers of all time (alongside Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, and arguably Alain Prost and Jackie Stewart as well). First he took the record for most pole positions, then he equalled Fangio on championships, and he has been closing in on Schumacher ever since. But what's truly staggering to me is that Ferrari were competitive in 2017, almost as fast as Mercedes, but then in 2018, *Ferrari had the fastest car more often than not,* AND Red Bull were closer than ever too. Yet here are the stats between the two great multiple world champions in fairly equal machinery across those two years:
    Pole positions - Hamilton 22, Vettel 9
    Race victories - Hamilton 20, Vettel 10
    Podium finishes - Hamilton 30, Vettel 25
    Points - Hamilton 771, Vettel 637 (-134)
The fact that Lewis not only beat, but DESTROYED his (now former) rival for the title of most successful driver of the 2007-2020 (and probably beyond) era, makes the fact that he will soon be above even Schumacher in the record books more than earned. We are witnessing history.

Button, Alonso and Rosberg were all world class drivers, just look at their career statistics in comparison to teammates who arn't Lewis Hamilton. Also when Mercedes started to get serious they approached Hamilton not the other way round and people seem to ignore that fact. Hamiltons talent is however recognised and admired by many of his on track competitors (Alonso speaks very highly of him), rival team bosses and expert pundits so I don't tend to take much notice of the arm chair experts with selective memories.

So true. All the other drivers understand how hard it is to do what he is doing and as a result, the respect it massively. A lot of fans seem to not see how incredible he actually is and the fact that he has only been beaten in a championship twice by a teammate is phenomenal. And Mercedes wanted him, not e wanted Mercedes as you say so all the more testament to his brilliance as a driver.

The former believes he is better than the six time world champion, and the latter always wants to play the "should, could, would" card when his driver is out classed, such as "if it wasn't for a slight mistake on his final lap Max would have probably nipped pole."

Being a fan of Hamilton it's often difficult expressing what truly makes him the goat IMO.
Years ago, I honestly considered Senna the best driver. Also thought fernando was more "complete". But since 2017 and specifically 2018 Lewis has risen above those two in scope and completeness.
Hamilton has always been quick, devastatingly quick. However, he lacked the other extraordinary qualities that separate the very very good from the great. He'd qualify well but often lost places at the start. Found himself in needless incidents or had inconsistent race pace.
There are two crucial events that birthed current Lewis. Firstly was the move to mercedes and secondly losing to rosberg. By every conceivable metric he was the better driver in 2016 but still lost. How? Mechanical issues, sure. But he knew he didn't maximise every aspect of racing. Jensen once said; "the day lewis learns to work with his engineers, the rest of the grid better not turn up."
For years, Hamilton relied too heavily on his natural adaptive talent to wring a lap from a misbehaving car. Unfortunately that's not possible over a stint. The tires would collapse. By learning, probably better than anyone else ,how these pirelli's operate he's able to extract outrageous amounts of performance from them. Bare in mind, he was once known as a tire killer. Like all the greats, he's constantly learning and scarily - improving.
How many races have we seen him push faster cars like charles in monza last year. Walk on water. Or repeated brake the lap record in hungary to eventually overhaul verstappen. Even his worse season, 2011, is stellar by any standard. 3 wins and the only none redbull pole speaks for itself. That Korean lap was a thing of beauty. Were it not for his incidents and mclaren's screw ups, button would've been toast. And unlike most who run after being beaten by their teammates, Lewis demolished button in 2012.
Though he's been beaten over a season, he remained demonstrably faster than his teammates. Three of which were or became world champions. Only Prost has a stronger rogues gallery. Let that sink in.
Mercedes current success is largely down to Lewis Hamilton and not the other way around. The engineers are amazing, the car is amazing but he is ligament that hold everything together. Without him, the car wouldn't have developed the way it did. The engine wouldn't have developed the way it did. Not my words, those are Andy Cowell's and James Allison. Worth noting, both have worked with most of the greats and both without pause cite lewis as the best. Not only for his talent, but humanity, sportsmanship and vision.
How many teams would change their 90 year old historic livery for their number one driver? How many drivers would put off signing the most lucrative deal/seat in f1? How many drivers would call on their sport to not only be more environmentally friendly but actively push for diversity and equality. Especially in a historically, predominantly white male, euro-centric, aristocratic culture. Not to mention being the first and currently only black driver.
Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton has absolutely nothing to prove. As fans, we should appreciate greatness in the flesh and not 15 or 20 years from now.

These days we are able to witness a consummate and an otherwise fully engaged and professional man going about his job of work. The argument of "Hamilton wins because his team mates are shite and he's in the best car" is absolute tripe. First, Hamilton has NEVER had a "shite" teammate. Alonso is one of the GOATS, Hekki wasn't as good but still managed mega drives and results, Button is a world champ along with Rosberg and both were great then Bottas is a proven race winner, podium sitter and pole getter. Now, I'll move onto the car side. Of course Lewis is in the best car because he deserves to be in it because he's been the best driver on the grid since 2014. This has happened many times: Schumacher, Prost, Senna. Most notably though, Fangio, who won 5 titles with 4 different constructors because he was able to bounce around the teams, getting the best cars because he was the best. It's simple, the best drivers get the best cars. I think the best way to prove Lewis is more than the car is to simply say, he's won a race in EVERY season in which he's competed. Even in cars like the 2009 Mclaren, 2011 Mclaren and the 2013 Mercedes. Anyone who says it's because of his teammates or car is simply idiotic. Right now people are caught up in the short term and only see Hamilton dominating as a boring thing. • @SURGASURGE12
    @SURGASURGE12 4 года назад +70

I've always had the view that Lewis is the fastest driver on the grid. His one-lap pace since 2007 has been excellent. In his earlier years, I do think that Hamilton was a bit like what Max Verstappen was in 2015-2018. Exciting to watch, pulls off brilliant overtakes, but is sometimes too eager and not willing to play the percentage game as much as he should, particularly in 2008 and 2011 when he made quite a lot of errors in those seasons.
However, since 2012, Hamilton has become the complete driver. The points in 2012 don't tell the full story because I believe that Lewis was every bit as good as Fernando and Seb, but the car was unreliable and further points were lost in bad pit stops, poor strategies and team errors. Since that season, he stopped going for overambitious moves if the risk was not worth taking, and has only done so if he absolutely had to. He's transformed himself from a Senna into a Prost. In this era of F1, the Senna approach is more exciting, but the Prost approach wins you more titles.
I'm not gonna say that there is a G.O.A.T because I don't think it's possible to compare drivers from different eras, but if you're going to have that conversation, then Hamilton has to be among the names mentioned.

    • @BMPHF1
      @BMPHF1  4 года назад +9

Uzair Syed Perfectly said. The GOAT debate is subjective and heavily dependent on too many factors. The era is also extremely important so it’s impossible to compare. But looking at where this guy came from to where he is today, he has had the most meteoric rise to stardom and has never stopped pushing the limits. He will forever remain a legend for everything he has done on and off the track. I feel like what we are witnessing will never be replicated again.

@@BMPHF1 Also, I find it interesting that Max gets a pass for having a very mediocre group of teammates. Hamilton's teammates have been far tougher than Verstappen's, yet if Verstappen outqualifies his teammate, he is seen as amazing but if Hamilton does it then it's the car and his teammate is weak.
Hamilton has faced Alonso (a GOAT contender) and Button/Rosberg both of whom are very good drivers and World Champions. Let's not forget that Bottas did a very good job in the Williams and used to be highly rated before his move to Mercedes in 2017.
Max meanwhile, is currently facing Alex Albon, who has not won a single title in junior formulae, and is underperforming in the Red Bull. Pierre Gasly, who had possibly the worst performance I have ever seen in a top tier car and I don't think has the mentality of a WDC, and Carlos Sainz, who is a solid midfield driver, aka Hulkenberg, but is not WDC material.
The only top driver Max has faced is Ricciardo. And even as a Ricciardo fan, I have to say that he is not on the level of Alonso.
Verstappen has had mostly mediocre teammates while Hamilton has had mostly strong teammates. Bottas is akin to Barrichello, so going by this logic Schumacher had a weak teammate in the early 2000s, but of course his fans are not going to accept that.
Hamilton isn't even my favourite driver but he is probably the most disrespected driver I have ever seen based on the vitriol I see on social media, so I feel obliged to be positive about him.

I think they'd both do very well. As well as Ham, that's really impossible to know. While the car definitely matter a whole helluva lot, I think if we're going to compare drivers, we have to give them somewhat the benefit of the doubt. Like with Schumacher in the F2004 or Senna is his McLaren and so on. They had great cars but we also remember them as great drivers. Could there have been some other drivers who could have beat them in equal machinery? Maybe. But I dont think we can judge historically based upon maybe. I say we have to go with what we have. Theres a similar point made often where I live (North Carolina). Basketball is huge here and a lot of great players have grown up here (Michael Jordan, Steph Curry, Chris Paul, etc). But as good as the NBA players were, there are countless stories of unknown guys who used to outshine the NBA players throughout their youth and even early adulthood. The stories often end with, they didnt have the grades to play in college, or they were never discovered, or they just got hurt. Now do we rate these players, as better than their NBA counterparts? No. Could they have been? Maybe. But at the end of the day they never got there. I think F1 Is similar. You've got to look at the guys at the top and while there might be some drivers naturally better, if we're going to make any type of historical comparisons, we have to heavily weigh the success a driver has had. Because in a sport like F1, its very hard to truly grade driver talent apart from car proficiency.

And then Lewis comes through with a lap 6 tenths faster than his championship rival Sebastian Vettel and over 3 tenths ahead of Verstappen in a Red Bull that was much better around Singapore than the Merc. No matter what people say, in the end, the stats speak for themselves and hopefully people will come back to this video for reference. Thanks for the support 😊

This is exactly why Hamilton gets hate, it's because of his fanboys who think there's no other great drivers on the grid. Max is the closest thing to Lewis we've seen in the last decade in terms of raw pace and aggression. Max is winning races in a car that's no where near good enough to challenge for the title, just like Lewis used to do in his McLaren days. Mercedes would snap up Max in a heartbeat if Lewis retires and Max is available. Lewis is arguably the GOAT but that doesn't mean there aren't any other great drivers on the grid. Max doesn't win races because he's overrated, he wins because he's good. Just like Lewis doesn't win because of the hype, he wins because he's a great driver. I'm not Lewis's biggest fan but that doesn't make me blind to his ability. Max is a great driver and has proved it.

Absolutely loved this video, the he's got the best car and weak team mates do a disservice to Hamilton and the Incredibly talented drivers he has faced in his own teams. The fact that Merc had a full court press to get him Ross Brawn, Nicki etc tells us they wanted the best and he is most certainly that. Great audio and video 👍

Hamilton is the best driver in the world in the best car in the world and the success they are achieving as a pairing is incomparable to I think any other dynasty we have seen.

Very good video and an honest approach to the subject.
Over a season of any significant length, no driver wins an F1 championship in inferior machinery. _Merc's_ unprecedented dominance in the hybrid era does, however, mask and even slightly undermine HAM's greatness. I would go as far as to contend that skills like wheel-to-wheel combat have likely suffered for lack of honing through frequent use.
One of the greatest testaments to HAM's skill and ability is the excellence of his cumulative achievement in karts and lower formulae, where he never enjoyed anything approaching clear car advantage for entire seasons. In F1, his greatest achievements are the poles and wins he got in cars that weren't the quickest on the grid. _Fernando Alonso,_ a fellow all-time-great, expresses this particularly eloquently when he, for instance, is posed the question of what makes HAM great.
Beautiful dedication of his 93rd career F1 pole to the late _Chadwick Boseman_ and I hope HAM completes the tribute as intended with a win tomorrow.

    • @BMPHF1
      @BMPHF1  4 года назад +1

y1521t21b5 Perfectly put. His skills were developed mainly in lower formulae and in karting and as a result, when he was blessed with a good car in F1, he had no trouble adapting and now he has worked of refining his skills to a point where no man or team can touch him. The finishing touch after that pole yesterday was when he did the Wakanda forever salute in memory of the late Chadwick Boseman. Knowing Lewis, he won’t let anything stand between him and that winners trophy as I think he’ll be on a mission to honour the legendary Chadwick Boseman. Rest In Power King 🖤

His wheel to wheel combat is a massive talent how to damage less you own car when a contact is the outcome. Lewis most of the time taken lesser damaged than who he fight with. Here the list: Fresh from Austria 2020 with Albon, Brazil 2019 with Albon, China 2018 with Max, Austria 2016 with Nico, Spa 2014 with Nico....(put yours). Any one can explain how he manage to do that time and time again. No one can manage to do this either attacking or defending but Lewis can do both. When come to contact Lewis stay on the grey area of rules set as Nico explained. As Lewis rarely make contact with drivers only 5 occasions I founded. That's why he currently hold record the longest point finished and podium.

Fantastic vid. Hits it out the park in underlining every reason why we are witnessing a once in a generation talent.
I was impressed with Hamilton’s instinctive opportunism in 2008 to win that year’s championship, but it was in 2009 that I became convinced that he was the real deal: his focus, determination and his skill in what Eddie Jordan described as arguably Mclaren’s worst design (at that point) was hugely impressive.
As one commenter pointed out recently, Hamilton has never been an underdog because his talent his so special and he knows it, which is why some of us Brits have such hard time wrapping our heads around the facts of his success: in 🇬🇧, we always love an underdog, someone with flaws and all who’s more like us; we just don’t know how to appreciate super confident heroes, so it’s easier to handicap them in some way, which is why people reach for explanations like “ he’s in best car” “weak teammates” “Max is better... blah blah”
He’s possibly the greatest sporting hero this country has produced and we shouldn’t be ashamed to acknowledge it.

Good video with a lot of potential. Just counter a couple of points in a constructive manner, I wouldn't say that Lewis was signed to lead Mercedes per se. I'd have seen him as a great talent, but Mercedes policy was never to have a team leader, at least in its initial setting up shop of the Rosberg-Hamilton relationship. He does occasionally lose his head, 09-11 was a little turbulent for him on occasions. But hes matured brilliantly into a statesman and behemoth of the sport. We are arguably seeing the peak of his brilliance. Anyway, keep up the good work.

Thank you. Sorry for the late reply. RUclips is showing me all the comments notifications which is a bummer. Yeah your counter is valid actually. There really has never been a team leader in the way that there has been at Red Bull or at Ferrari. That’s a reason why I think they’re so successful. He was also quite hot-headed especially in 2011, but as you say, he has transformed into a mature, level-headed beast who rarely makes mistakes. At the moment he is inch perfect in everything. @lukeschillin Gonna have to disagree with you there bud. Lewis was in fact brought in as team leader, to replace the ageing Schumacher. It's important to acknowledge speed isn't the only consideration when filling a seat in f1. Commercial and branding is as important. Mercedes had aspirations of winning and they needed the best drivers available, not only to drive but the sell their brand, in this case cars. The board weren't convinced lewis was the right man because of how he's portrayed in the media. Nikki didn't care one iota, signed him without the boards approval.
In terms of how the race team is operated, both drivers are given equal treatment. There are no number 1 or number 2 driver.

My dad has been a McLaren fan his whole life, first Hunt, then Senna was his first big love and then Häkkinen. I was born in 2001 and started watching formula 1 because of him when I was a baby. The first season I still remember was 2005. Then came the announcement in 2006 that Alonso would join McLaren, which we were very happy about for obvious reasons. Then one day in late 06 my dad came to me and showed me a video. It was Lewis’ GP2 highlights from the Turkish Grand Prix that year. I can still remember watching that video for the first time and being completely blown away by Lewis’ overtakes and how he still almost won the race after he spun on the second lap and fell back to the back of the grid. After I finished watching it my dad told me that he would drive for McLaren in 2007. I remember instantly felling in love with his driving style. It’s needles to say that I became a Hamilton fan that day. Ever since then this man and f1 have been a major part in my life. He is the reason I always wake up with a big smile on my face every saturday and sunday morning on race week. I watched him drive like a seasoned world champion for the first half of that 07 season to throwing away the title in China because of a stupid rookie mistake. I remember crying for 30 minutes straight after he sank his car in the gravel in the pit entry. I remember a year later crying for 30 minutes straight because he overtook glock in the penultimate corner of the last lap in Brazil and thus finally winning that title. I could go on like this for hours of my favorite memories of him in F1, good or bad. The point I’m trying to make is that this man is a spectacle. On his best days, which nowadays seems like every other race weekend the man is this inhuman godlike figure that is invincible by anyone. It’s ok not to like him, but you can at least appreciate greatness, when it has been there right in front of your eyes on tv for the last 13 years.

Given the competition he has faced through the years and what he has faced off the track, what he has achieved is more than commendable. Always pushes himself to the maximum, understands the machine so well to know how much it can be pushed exactly and staying clinical be it FP, Quali or the race, all this without cursing on the radio all the time. Entertainment being valued over consistency (of a team and a driver) says a lot about the mass behaviour in general.

great video man, i really liked the way it was done. yes im not the biggest fan of stats, because it can be manipulated for an outcome depending on how you use it to show what you believe in. but in saying this, the format was one to show everyone the amount of DNF,which some people omit from their findings. etc. but yes,if you go back to his carting days,it was clear to see then how good he was in the rain as well. that is where he picked up his race craft.blindingly fast in all conditions and very very quick to adapt to changing conditions, with the teams help of course, but he just gets on with it. loved Martin Brundles comment on Lewis as well. most will not see past their own hate for Lewis, and dont get me wrong,i am a fan of most of the f1 drivers anyway,i just choose to be a predominantly Lewis fan. a guy made comment on one the f1 videos, said he raced against Lewis when was around 8-10 years of age. said he was a beast back then already. he couldnt believe how Lewis did what he did in those carts, today he,he said he could see why its hard to beat him, absolute control of most situations. but to do that year in and year out....nuts! even Dani boy said it in the post race interview...Max as well. if they can recognise his driving,WHO THE HELL ARE THESE SNOWFLAKE ARMCHAIR COMMENTATORS THEN? I'll say that Lewis is one of the greatest F1 drivers in history. However, the reason he's won 6 titles is because of the car/team. Put Lewis in one of the Red Bull cars and he'd get an occasional victory and be in 3rd or 4th place at season end just like Max Verstappen. Same for Sebastian Vettel...he won 4 consecutive titles with Red Bull because of the car/team. The driver is important, but it's not the main factor.

Michael wouldnt have got to 7 without building the team around him. Fangio wouldnt have got to 5 without constantly looking for which team had the best car and resources. The fact is you can't have one without the other. You can't have a winning team without a winning driver and vice versa. The best drivers get the max out of the car more often than others. Lewis has done that time and time again over the near decade and a half. THATS why he is where he is now. Being able to get the best of the equipment around him using his natural driving ability.

That implies that there would be other drivers on the grid who could take 1st and 2nd in the Mercedes car. That is unlikely, if Lewis was in a RB, because Max already pushes close to 2nd in the RB. If it wasnt Max in the Merc, the odds that someone would take 1st or 2nd while Lewis was in a RB are not so good.

Lewis is one of the best if not the best - In every ear - everyone criticizes each driver and eventually they accept. Saying all of that - He is still one of the underrated drivers of his time. Everyone say he wins because he is in a better car - But that is not true. He brings quite a lot to the table not only just as a driver - Even Tott said it in an interview - when the team wanted to put him on a wrong tire by mistake - Hamilton asked for the right one and Valtteri was given the same option and he took it - and Lewis won and Valtteri finished 3rd and could not catch Max- There is a reason why he keeps on Winding - Lets face it Red bull has no bad of a car - We have all seen it - on the 70th anniversary we saw Max won if Lewis make mistake Max will be there to take his position and Lewis just doesn’t make any- at least not that easily…

Excellent video. All I could add is a thought on how he got his start with McLaren.
Barcelona picks up a young boy from Rosario called Messi and turns him into the best footballer of his generation. He gets all the breaks, pampered, top notch coaching, nutrition etc. You never hear anyone say “he isn’t very good because he never cut his teeth at Osasuna” because that is the accepted model in football.
Ron Dennis picks up a young, working class lad from Stevenage and turns him into the best single seat racer of his generation. You often hear people say “he isn’t very good because he never played cut his teeth at Arrows”. The accepted model in F1 is basically that you need parents rich enough to get you into the sport or influential enough to attract sponsors. McLaren broke this.
Just think how much better F1 drivers would be if, like Dennis, all teams drew from 99.95% of the population rather than 0.05%

I don't generally do philosophy but there is a quote. Roman philosopher Seneca, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” You can't create your "luck" if you don't first take the opportunity that's presented to you. The cars don’t drive themselves. Schumacher always drove at the limit, pushing. He made mistakes, could be overly aggressive at times, but was amazing to watch. So dominant in a spectacular fashion. Lewis Hamilton is never flashy. Rarely spectacular. He’s the definition of consistency and perfection. His consistency wears you down, forces you to make mistakes because he won’t. He makes brilliance look easy because he’s so smooth and consistent in his absolute perfection.
Lewis Hamilton can drive 9/10 and look as if he’s doing a familiarity lap, he’s so smooth and non flashy, whereas other drivers look as if they are flogging every last bit of performance from the car.
To overlook Bottas does him a disservice as well. He’s also consistently very good. Second half of every season he pulls away from Verstappen in the championship.
To say that Hamilton only wins because of the car is personal preference for Verstappen. When he does win, which is rare, the Verstappen lover’s never say max won because of the car. If it’s all about the car, then make Formula 1 a self driving car series 🤷‍♂️
While Verstappen was being overly aggressive, even reckless, blocking people, running them wide off the track then crying when someone does it to him, Lewis was the model of consistency and perfection. Look at the races where Mercedes has mechanical difficulties, and Lewis finds a way to get a podium or a win. Once again, the whole element goes away about it being the car. Down on power, tires degrading, car handling poorly. It takes skill to compete in Formula 1, and a clear leader will always have fans who personally don’t like him and create ideas in their heads to attack him.
Besides the numerous records Lewis holds or shares with Schumacher, these matter the most. Total wins, championship titles.
Wake me when any driver comes remotely close to 4 titles, much less 7.
