    **Giveaway is now closed**
    But feel free to check out the lenses
    These lenses are available for the following mounts:
    Sony E: amzn.to/34Cpf3o
    Fuji X: amzn.to/3nI6of6
    Canon EF-M: amzn.to/3aCS2c6
    M43: amzn.to/3rlE8kz
    Lightroom lens correction profile is not available for the 7Artisans, but you can use the 7.5mm lens profiles from other brands. They worked great for me.

    Great comparison between the two. I'm leaning more towards the 7artisans because of the close focusing which can give more interesting compositions even though the samyang has slightly better IQ. Keep up the good work.

    Another great option is Fisheye Hemi by Imado! $30 plugin for Lightroom or Photoshop that does a fantastic job defisheye-ing without losing as much field of view. Worth it to get those extreme angles. That 7artisans lens is exactly what I have been looking for, thanks for bringing it to my attention!

    I love your opening shot going from barrel to pincushion distortion while zooming. Awesome!
    Yes, lens correction in post is powerful, and you can emulate rectilinear from your fish-eye lens. But if you want a rectilinear shot, and you can afford a real rectilinear lens, the shot will certainly end up with higher resolution overall simply because you don't have to crop away so much content to get a rectangular shot.
    Also, of course (as you claim), rectilinear lenses stretch content at the edges of the image, and so does a fish-eye lens once you post-process to make the fish-eye shot look rectilinear. The _stretching_ of the edge content is _not_ the reason people don't use fish-eye lenses to get rectilinear shots.
    The problem is that when this stretched content comes from a fish-eye lens with post-production lens correction, it gets _blurry_ , because it now takes up many more pixels than the fish-eye lens originally made available for it.
    With a rectilinear wide-angle lens, the stretched content at the edges of the shot is _sharp_ because it is given plenty of pixels _in camera_ . A good rectilinear lens certainly stretches things, but it stretches them _before they are digitized_ . Such _analog_ stretching doesn't reduce sharpness (unless the lens itself is flawed somehow).

    I have the Samyang, great little lens. If I want ultra-wide rectilinear, I use my Laowa 9mm, the point of a fish-eye is the curved perspective, which looks far more pleasing than trying to ‘correct’ it after the fact. What I have done sometimes in photos with strong verticals, or people in shot, is correct the verticals, but keep the curved horizontals, which gives an appearance a bit like an iPhone panorama. In Lightroom, you can use Fisheye Hemi. I don’t use Lightroom though, and like to have more control, so use Hugin.

    De-fishing vs. images from a rectilinear lens - yeah, the corner distortion is the same, but if you start out with a rectilinear you will have more true information in the corners. You won't be stretching pixels.

    Loved the video and the opinion about the gear. I can understand your point. I have a 12mm samyang and I agree sometimes I wished for something more extreme.
    It's good to help people selecting the lens that can help them the most. You don't need a 12mm on a M4/3 unless you are really into landscapes and architecture and astrophotography.
    You can have fun with the distortion so much more.

    • @JimmiKai
      @JimmiKai  6 лет назад

      Deathbynature
      Yeah it costs more than three and a half times more. It should be better. But I guess it makes a lot of sense for MFT, because Laowa made the MFT version faster than their APS-C version (I think it was to compensate for the smaller sensor). They're still not as wide as this de-fishing method I showed. So there's ups and downs.

  • @TheSengard
    @TheSengard 4 года назад

    The lose of resolution is the point. If you don't need high resolution images and your are comfortable with editing your Shots, the fish eye is all right.
    To correct that in post in videos is a bigger issue. So for video I would not use a fisheye. Only if I want to have that specific look.

    super wide lenses do stretch the corners, but its optical, the pixels are unaltered. when you stretch a fisheye in post the corners look like trash. 8mm in crop is 12mm full-frame equivalent (irix do a 11mm that you don't have to ruin your corner pixels to correct) its full-frame though, and costs around £350, (which is still dirt cheap). good vid though, i like the fisheye effect.

  • @user-qo2xj8wf6f

    There's slight mistake in this review because 7Artisans 7.5mm angle of view is less than 180 degrees according to other comparisons to Rokinon 8mm i've seen.
    7Artisans just come up with Mark II version of 7.5mm lens that states wider 190 degree angle of view (so perhaps real number is closer to 180 degree) and could also have other improvements over original, at same price tag.

    • @MrPhilbautista

      7 Artisans - $139. Laowa - $499 (or $519 if you want the lighter one that can be used on a DJI Inspire). You lose a lot of info when you fix it because it is essentially cropping the original pic. For posting on social media, no big deal. For making Air BnB ads, you can still get away with it. For shooting magazine editorials, be a pro and spend the extra $$$ and write it off as a capital expenditure.

    Hi! Very nice review. You have mentioned that both of them can be found with MFT mount. However I can't find the 8mm one with that mount. Also, are they different projections resulting in different shapes of image on edges? (I guess they are different as with different focal lengths they provide same AoV). I am wondering if I obtain significantly smaller AoV with 8mm Samyang than with 7.5mm Risepray?

  • @AlluX97
    @AlluX97 6 лет назад

    The problem of the defishing method is that you strech pixels instead of glass.(Digital stretching < Optical stretching) You can definitely achieve great results as you demonstrated, but you lose some quality in progress. Anyway thanks for making this vid, maybe I should try to do more with my fisheye.
    Cheers

    • @JimmiKai
      @JimmiKai  6 лет назад

      As stated in the video, "you can always crop out the over-stretched parts" because the angle of view is much wider than a standard ultra-wide angle lens.
      Using the stretched pixel argument, the center of the photo actually has greater pixel density, so does that mean I gain some quality in the progress? haha Cheers

    I was perfectly content with my lens setup until I saw this video. My wife will probably send you a bad email later on, and you'll know why.

    Was that the Rideau centre and the national art gallery in Ottawa?

    Thanks for the video!
    BTW is the slide at 3:59 wrong?
    12mm should be equivalent to 73° horizontal FOV and 10mm to 82.4°

    It looks like you're from Ottawa. Some of the footage was from the NAC on Elgin. That's awsome.
