There was a big push on radio with "Can't Sleep Love". I'm just not sure it was the right song. I want to think if they'd pushed "Cracked" like that it would've taken off and gone Top 10 and we'd have half the world trying to imitate Scott's signature runs.
I think ‘Rather Be’ really showcases Kirsten’s vocal abilities. As you have said before Jared she really has a beautiful voice and I love listening to her sing. And in ‘New Rules...’ the bell tones that they do are just sick! I love it!
"Rather Be" was great. I am assuming they did this on one of their tours to the Far East. Really a great showcase for Kirstie, who absolutely killed it. And, another seamless mashup with "New Rules" and "Are You That Somebody". As to why they are not more popular, I think that there are so many younger people out there that are so used to the electronically enhanced, auto tuned, over produced stuff that so much of music is these days that they don't recognize just how good PTX is because they don't do that stuff. Not realizing that the reason PTX is so good is because they DON'T do that. If that makes any sense.
I couldn't click on this video quick enough when I saw "Rather Be" on the notification. This is one of my favorites because I love Kirstin is singing the lead. I really love Kevin and Matt in "New Rules x Are You that Somebody". They killed it.
"Are You That Somebody" is from way back in 1998, from Aalyiah. The beat sequence at the beginning of that song (and in the PTX mashup) is iconic, and even I recognized it (although I couldn't name the song it was from before the PTX cover). Of course, I hear "New Rules" every time I go to the department store two blocks away from my apartment (along with just about every other song on "Top Pop, Vol I", and the original Clean Bandit version of "Rather Be" is on Safeway's programming. "Rather Be" is one of quite a few songs where I heard the PTX cover first, or didn't recognize the song until PTX covered it. (Until Pentatonix did their cover of "Dancing On My Own", I thought that the words were "I Keep Dancing on the Flow" or "...Floor. " We'll ignore my mishearing of Rihanna's "We Found Love" and a-ha's "Take On Me", which were revealed through Mitch and Scott's impeccable diction. Let's just say that I felt incredibly stupid after clearly hearing the correct lyrics.) I like your double-headers, although I'm not always a fan of the format in general. You seem to (either instinctively, or by sheer coincidence) to pick songs in pairs which work well together, even if they are not clearly related. You also pick up on some of the musical moments which a lot of reactors miss; I am surprised at the number of reactions to "Attention" that don't pick up on that amazing chromatic drop during the bridge.
Rather Be is my favourite PTX cover - I love Kirstin's lower register and everyone else supports the song so well. Plus the video is so crisp and visually stimulating whilst still focusing on them.
quick note on "New Rules x Are you that Somebody". In a video Scott was going to bring New Rules to the group because he loved that song. But then he heard Kevin's mashup with Are you that somebody and they decided to make a full recording of it. There is a video of KOvers out there that I think you would enjoy. Just little snippets that he did on twitter and instagram that was put together. Check it out
Regarding their covers vs. original music.. they are returning to covers with their new album PTXTopPopV1, which New Rules x Are You That Somebody was the first song and Official Video that we heard from it. It was the first mashup in ages and those are always really popular. People seem to like the WOW factor when PTX takes something familiar to all of us and makes it better without instruments. All 3 Grammys were for Covers and arrangements of same. We have Daft Punk Medley (the video played heavily into that Grammy! I think Ben Bram won something for the video too. Next is Tchaikovsky. His 5th Symohony, "Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy" from "The Nutcracker Suite" . They won the Grammy for "Best Arrangement of a Classical Piece by an A Capella Group". I think they created a category in order to give them an award for their amazing vocalization of an all instrumental piece. It's amazing! Next was Jolene. For their live performance of their collaboration with Dolly Parton. Dolly and Scott each sang a verse with Scott performing a song about "his man", which I think was one of the first times a man was the love interest of the male vocalist in front of the entire mainstream music world. Their original music hasn't been greeted with as much of the "WOW" factor we see from what they do to popular music. We love their original music! We also love their mashups! They're ingenious! In the one you just reacted to, it was so smart that they played the beats Timbaland wrote and performed for the late Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody" throughout the entire song. It's one of Timbaland's most acclaimed beats he's written. I'm just glad they left the crying baby out of this! His other very well known and popular beat was written and performed for Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" . So, yeah. It leaves me scratching my head as to why they aren't at the top of the charts with singles! I can't remember if you reacted to their first installment of ptxperience that they just brought back for the summer tour that's running right now. But it shows them doing a lot of practice with the choreo. They've never done heavy choreo because of the worry about getting out of breath when they have to sing an entire concert with nothing to back them up if their voice gives out. There's no track running in the background. But like they practiced 45 hours straight! Can you believe it?! But their game is just blowing the roof off of what we've seen from Pentatonix before! They are wearing custom designed costumes and they have costume changes during the concert. The is Incorporated throughout the concert and some is heavier choreo and then as you would expect some less aerobic choreo so they can recover before they do a heavy choreo number. And there voices are on spot! Just a mind-blowing elevation to like pop stardom level of performance for their concert! I've been listening 2 + viewing them perform live online in fan videos during concerts and normally they wear street clothes and then upgraded to the kind of thing you saw in the twofer review you did 4 haha and telephone in Singapore. But now they are coordinated in their costume design. And Kirsten is wearing very little! I thought she looked like a superhero and then she turns around and comments that she feels like a superhero because of her costumes and she loves it! They just put out the second installment to this ptxperience for summer 2018 and they covered the first three performances of concert venues and mostly than backstage afterwards and it was great! it was really funny listening to Kirsty talk about when she fell flat on her behind during a dance sequence that she does with Matt and Kevin. and she was showing them how she recovered from it and tried to act like it was natural and said that she almost went with a full Dead Drop because it might have sold as part of the choreography! 😂it's a lot of fun and they're only about 5 minutes long. Thank you so much for finally reaction to New Rules Are You That Somebody! It was the first time they changed up their Style because they could do a different sort of sound with Matt's individual skill. so we were surprised , but We really like that beat! and the interaction between him and Kevin is great! They filmed this in New York because Kristin was on Broadway at this time in Kinky Boots. they all came to her in order to record this video and I know Kirsten it was madly in love with the view of New York skyline from her apartment during her stay there! She loves New York! and I'm sorry this comment is so long but you started it by commenting about original versus covers! 😂 😂 😂 😉
SO glad you reacted to these!!! I’d say most of us PTX fans have NO PROBLEM with you doing 2 Pentatonix songs in one vid. The more the better! I think one PTX classic you may have missed is Cheerleader? Also, if you’d like to see this group appreciated by their peers in the entertainment industry, you might enjoy “Famous People Reacting To Pentatonix” Be sure to get the one by PTX Videos. It’s very satisfying to watch and you get ideas of more great PTX performances you may have missed otherwise.
Rather Be has both good main and background vocals plus the rythm section is also amazing. I listened to it several times before and each time I focus on each part. Hahaha as for the New Rules x AYTS, Matt and Kevin killed it. ❤️ Glad you also noticed the bell tones they're making. The mash-up was beautifully arranged. 😍
I like your hair in this video :) Glad you listened to Rather Be. One of my all time favourites!! New rules is great..I love the mash up.. love how seamless it sounds!
Very smart of you to do two vids in one 😁 Also pentatonix just started releasing new PTXperience videos that I think you would really like. The first and second vid is out so you could react to that if you want to.
I clicked on this video quickly this morning. I have been waiting for Rather be, I love Kirstin in this video. Your reactions are amazing, I loved that you mentioned the bells in Are you that Somebody. Most reactors never mention them, and they get me every time I listen to this song!!!
Rather Be is one of my favorite of Kristen on the lead, thankyou for reacting to this 😍 love your reaction (watched almost all ur reaction to ptx already) and yass Scotty voice is always clean and beautiful 😭 all of them ❤️ love PTX ❤️
I don't know if you knew it when taping or you just identified it out by sheer musicality, but "Are you that somebody", which is the beat they used throughout (they subbed the original "New Rules" arrangement and replaced it with AYTS) is indeed an old school R&B beat from the 90s done by Timbaland as producer for Aaliyah. His beats populated the airwaves on the 90s. I always enjoy your reactions!! Thanks!
She has a song she they only did in concert performances . It’s icalled Water and it’s worth finding. It’s the first time I heard her! She is great in the blend and she does amazing things but this song the emotion in her voice is amazing. I got to see it twice and I am sad they stopped doing it.
Rather Be is my absolute favorite Kirstin lead song. She's never looked better, either, before she went so extreme with her looks and her makeup, and no heavy, clunky heels, just her natural, darling, curvy, petite self. And the video is so entertaining. Every time you see it, you notice something new you may not have noticed before.
i think since Matt was a pentaholic before he tried out for the part made a huge difference for him because he already knew his part to all of their songs i remember in an interview i saw scott said we went thru the songs once and he had his part down pat. can you imagine being a huge fan of a group like PTX and then one day you're a part of it? he has been so stoked and so happy i think he does add something great to the group and he has made it so they can do more modern stuff and r and b because that wasn't avi's style at all although he always did a good job.
I love PTX, they are very cool. I like that they are creative, funny and create for their listeners. They enjoy what they do, it's wonderful. They inspire people to work and to their endeavors. Do not be afraid to look ridiculous. I like the video and the song Superfruit - Keep me coming
Pentatonix net worth right now is about 60 million $ that's not counting there you tube channel 1.5 million a yr. and their solo rose to superfruit has made good money too. Believe their doing it right now on tour they audiences are about 15,000 people each night hello big production .
If you haven't Heard them yet you need to watch them!! Pop Goes Broadway and watch the boopers after because it's very funny!! And it's with Shoshana Bean!!!
So.. Rather Be, Kirsten's Alto range is showcased so well. Nice to hear that. Other than that, amazing arrangement and video. New Rules/Are You that Somebody. You are the first reactor to pick up on the 'bell tones'. I like that. I think that Matt is the right choice for them moving on. While Avi was the sound that made PTX (in the bass dept.) and what a genius move that was getting Avi and Kevin on board, I think Matt can move them forward with an equivalent sound. I need to get to see them live, but I'm in the UK and they've never been close enough for me to get there. Someday, maybe.
I've complained before that they've strayed away from originals. They had always had a couple original songs on every album they came out with before Avi left, but now we haven't heard an original from them outside of their latest Christmas album. They said last year they were gonna put out another original album this year but I'm not holding my breath anymore.
You should really check the original (also filmed in Japan) if only just to see how Kirstin.really killed the part. Clean Bandit liked the cover so much that for several months they had an on screen link to the PTX version in their video. Of course PTX did the same for their original.
Hey brother it’s up to you but I think you should react to Christian Burrows X-factor audition in the UK. He does an original he wrote about his little brother that passed. It might be too close to home for you so I understand or could be a new favorite. Either way made me think of you. Keep doing what you’re doing love the channel.
Jerod M You really should consider switching your work shift with someone or call in sick or something! Lol Hate that they're in your backyard and ya can't go : (
Would you please react to Hua Chen Yu "Ordinary Path " and "Child" in Singer 2018? You can find English subtitles in the website "Hua Chenyu English subs ". Thanks.
Hey can you please please react to Tim Fousts vocal range by Alex Fuentes he has a five octave vocal and he’s from the accapella vocal band home free MAKE SURE YOU WHERE HEADPHONES he’s the main bass but please please watch it he’s got an amazing voice, I feel like you would definitely like it

Love these covers
I agree, PTX should be all over the radio. People that don't know them are missing out.

@@ischmidt lol right. Those legendary runs giving Todrick a run for his money
Kirsten was an all-state alto back in the day - Rather Be really showcases her great lower register.
I think ‘Rather Be’ really showcases Kirsten’s vocal abilities. As you have said before Jared she really has a beautiful voice and I love listening to her sing. And in ‘New Rules...’ the bell tones that they do are just sick! I love it!

Same here. I actually made squeely noises trying to get to it quicker.
lol
I felt the sameway
Rather be was perfect for her. But they are all ridiculously talented. Thanks for the double reaction
"Are You That Somebody" is from way back in 1998, from Aalyiah. The longer the better. I watch these on my treadmill😊
I'm surprised that radio doesn't play them. Covers or originals they rock it in their style.

PTX should be all over the radio. People that don't know them are missing out.

Falling in love was my sleeper favorite from the classics album. How wrong can you go with Elvis Presley songs.
She has a song she they only did in concert performances . It’s icalled Water and it’s worth finding. It’s the first time I heard her! She is great in the blend and she does amazing things but this song the emotion in her voice is amazing. I got to see it twice and I am sad they stopped doing it.

Rather Be compared to Clean Bandit's original would be a great comparison video. It's one of the only songs where I like the original better. Barely.
