I've played Sonic games since day one and whenever I hear the Mega Drive and Master System Special Stage music it makes me tear up a bit. Nostalgia is a powerful thing for sure.
I had a dream once (after playing Sonic 1, and well before Sonic 2 came out) where there was a regular game stage that combined the rotating elements of the Sonic 1 bonus stage with the industrial environment (and especially the combustion engine in the final boss sequence) of Scrap Brain Zone. Sonic would be going mostly in ball form through rotating tunnels and being pushed through a maze by pistons that acted like yellow springs. I recall the environment being mostly yellow-orange. It also had some moody "deep dark" music in it that I've used as inspiration for some of my own music - the closest equivalent I can think of is the Tourian theme in Super Metroid, to give you an idea of how it sounded. Interestingly, some stages in both Sonic 2 and 3 had portions that looked and behaved a lot like what I had in that dream, with the main differences being that the stage wasn't rotating, and the "pistons" were plungers that you'd wind up to propel Sonic through. But the interconnected tunnel concept was definitely there, so maybe my dream foresaw the future. :)
@@phillysteak997 Yeah, pretty much, except Sonic 3's bonus stage - are you referring to the gumball machine stage, or the checkerboard planet where you collect the blue spheres? And I don't remember exactly when that dream was. But I was born in 77, so I was in my teens when the games came out.
@@phillysteak997 Not sure I see the connection between the pistons on my dream and the yellow bounce balls in that stage. But yeah, would have been in that time range.
@@phillysteak997 ah, I was thinking more the yellow and red springs found in nearly every level. And yeah, this would have been on Genesis - I remember it being an actual Sonic level. The rotation was similar to how the Sonic 1 special stage moves.
@@phillysteak997 Not sure what you mean. In my dream, it had the same chunky rotation as the special stage - rotating either clockwise or counterclockwise in steps, with Sonic's position and direction moving along with it. Basically, replace that special stage with a level that looks more like a mix of Scrap Brain and Casino Night zones, but keep the rotation and have most of it be an underground maze of tunnels. I'd imagine it would otherwise run as smoothly as the original games in general.
If you look closely at Tails in the original Sonic 2 special stages, you'll notice he also has tan arms - they probably had Sonic's arms as separate sprites and either didn't bother to/couldn't make new ones for Tails and Knuckles
It's hard for me to say which special stages are my favorite (the ones from the Genesis era I can easily get through, and IMO, the half-pipes since Sonic 2 have been done to death), but my least favorite are definitely the ones from Sonic Advance 1. It's just so difficult to get enough rings that to this day, I still can't get that darn fourth Chaos Emerald. What I'd like to see for a Special Stage in a future Sonic game is a race between Sonic and Dr. Eggman. Think of it like the Johnny races in Rush Adventure; Sonic has to stay ahead of Dr. Eggman by collecting rings to charge up his boost gauge, and also collect a certain amount to get past the midway checkpoint. Sonic can also go faster by running over dash panels that don't affect Dr. Eggman because the Egg Mobile flies over them.Dr. Eggman is invincible, but can damage Sonic by dropping bombs and firing missiles in addition to using his own boost gauge. Another unused Special Stage idea was meant to be in a cancelled Sonic game for the Sega Saturn (which was a different idea from Sonic X-treme). In it, Sonic was in a giant pool table and had to get all the balls into the holes within the time limit. Later special stages would have Dr. Eggman's robots trying to stop Sonic from putting the balls into holes. Though the game was cancelled, the special stage was later planned to be included in the Saturn version of 3D Blast, but was cut due to time constraints. It eventually got mythology gagged in Sonic Lost World; in Frozen Factory Act 2, Sonic was on a giant pool table and had to get nine balls into the holes to get the first Red Star Ring.
Separately, it always amazes me just how powerful the Sega Master System and Game Gear were. They were competitors to the NES and Game Boy, respectively, but in some respects were quite a bit more powerful graphically, and the fact that they could make Sonic games that played at all like the Genesis games was a pretty awesome achievement, IMO.
