Everything is a play on words. I could try my whole life to be so quick and never get near such a master. The one about the tale/tail is so wonderful I'm dumbstruck.
Two things wrong with this: 1) It's not an objective, factual conclusion. You think he's the funniest, great. Groucho is definitely worthy of serious consideration. And 2) no self-respecting, reasonable comedian/artist would _ever_ accept that type of compliment without argument. No comedian wants to hear "best of all time". It's impossible to live up to.
I love the Groucho interviews with Dick Cavett.....interesting to see the infamous Erin Fleming here....I hope all the stories about her abusing Groucho weren't true, because he was old and so frail then....thanks for posting
Yes Heavenshelp1, I agree, I own the Chandler book, which is my FAVORITE book BTW, I have read it at least 20 times literally!!!!!!! It's called "Hello, I must be going" Groucho was, and is still the best EVER!!!!!!! Thanx so much for posting these great moments in TV history, I wish more kids nowadays knew Groucho, I raised my son on him, and he is gonna be ten in 3 weeks, and he loves him! R.I.P. Groucho Marx!
Comedy like music is an art form and preference is subjective. No one's right or wrong. All the comedy people mentioned in these posts were all Hollywood Icons. Any opinion on preference is only that, an opinion. And it basically means nothing. Although people do have the right to voice it. I myself enjoy all the comedy teams. Some may find it timid by today's standards, but remember in those days you couldn't use words like pregnant, toilet or bathroom on the screen. They were taboo. There were morals and standards that were upheld or you were labeled.
I am big fan of the marx bros, and too se the comments made about Groucho and Erin shocked me then i read a book by Sally Presley Rippingale and John Ballow who was Grouchos chef.
I don't think Harry Karl was the husband he was talking about because Debbie made "Say One for Me" in 1959, this she and Eddie Fisher divorced. She didn't marry Harry Karl until 1960. This aired in 1971, so when she said he visited her in the hospital 13 years before she would not have been married to at that time.
Groucho was appearing regularly on the Cavett Show BEFORE he met Ms. Fleming. She had nothing to do with his Cavett appearances. I believe this appearance was Groucho's final Cavett show, and she had just arrived on the scene at the time. Groucho had a stroke some months after this TV appearance and should have retired after that, because the stroke took a lot out of him and really cut him down. But Fleming pushed him out there when he could hardly speak just to advance her own career.
@HeavensHelp1 -- Ms. Chandler was reportedly asked to leave by Erin a couple of years before Groucho's death. Erin's reason was that, at the time, Chandler did not have a signed book deal, as was supposedly originally claimed by Chandler when Erin allowed her access to the house. So Chandler's book is missing the increasingly bizarre final years. I have mixed feelings about Erin. She probably helped Groucho live longer, but she was also violent and mentally unstable.
Not bad for a guy who was over 80 years old at the time. Say what you will about Erin... and the evidence tends to conclude she was a certifiable nut... but Groucho could have spent his last years whisked away in solitude. Instead, he went out of this world doing what he always had done: entertaining and making people laugh. That's who he was. You can't blame Erin for that.
Too bad about her because in spite of Ms Chandler being supposedly being "thrown out" she was very complimentary of Erin in her book (I am currently about half way through it). Especially since the book would have been actually finished and published after she was "thrown out".
@HeavensHelp1 Erin didn't come on the scene until 1970-71. Cavett had Groucho on since the late 1960s. The Chandler book is limited because she was asked to leave before the end. Better books are "Raised Eyebrows" from Steve Stoliar or "Groucho" by Hector Arce. Both were there at the end when Erin went from crazy to psycho. She was a well-known whack job around LA when she met Groucho. Many stories. If she really loved him, she wouldn't have made him perform later when he was sick.
@orvgg i couldn't agree more. she would beat him and yell at him and she even said he had a stroke on her birthday just to ruin her birthday god i hate her. But u r right, if it weren't for her he wouldn't have appeared much
I actually agree. I think Jonathan Winters was much funnier than Robin Williams, in turn who was much funnier than Patton Oswalt, but all greats. I've only seen Winters on RUclips, but you try telling my ten-year-old self than Jim Carrey wasn't the funniest man ever in history. And that's all that matters, the fleeting opinion of those who are young and alive.

I hope that Groucho was aware of how beloved he was, not just across the country, but around the world.

That's for posting this. So that's Groucho's controversial companion, Erin Fleming.
Do we know the date of this interview? Groucho/Julius was born in 1890.
