I'm all for cold weather adventures, but I still prefer that in a canoe. No way would I be prepared for a backcountry snowshoe trip Ike that. Thanks for letting me enjoy watching you happily suffer in the woods from my couch! And keep up the great adventures!

There's a trick to the coffee. Once it is done brewing and still piping hot, drop some snow(or cold water) on top and the floaters will sink to the bottom. 👍

Hi Noah just sitting in front of my gas fireplace deep in my man cave watchin this amazing trek you and your buddies a doing and once again great stuff, and I've come to the conclusion that there must be a crazy place where you and all your crazy friends actually live, that's fine by me just keep doin it and stay safe.
Oh boy, do I miss the snow!! Climate change is killing me here on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. We've had such little snow the last 3 or 4 years. I'm fearful that the only way I will experience snow again is by watching videos from Canada.
Once I forgot my coffee filter set up and used a sock - a clean one 😂.
Then I recently saw on Clay Hayes channel, he did the cowboy coffee and said sprinkle some snow on top and it pushes the grounds to the bottom 😊 makes for great coffee ☕️
Thats the scavenger I like , the real rugged adventure with friends throught impossible terrain and weather !

Here's a trick I learned from a veteran hiker/camper: if you are wet when you make camp, put on your dry clothes and hang your wet ones. BUT..if it is still raining the next day, put your wet clothes back on, and pack your dry. Otherwise, you'll have two pair of wet clothes, and nothing dry to change into.
Definitely sounds good , although their wet clothes might have been frozen lol.
But seriously it does sound like a great idea , going to remember that one.
I have been many years on winter camping trips in Scandinavian mountains. Lots of downfall here too. Maybe not so much, fast and often massive rain down pours as you describe but that happens too.
BUT I and all fellow experianced people here do I as I have also learnt, tested IRL.
1st Try if possible to not get too wet before you set camp. Body warmth can dry you allmost up if not too (=medium) hardworking in end of day. I believe you must wear Gore tex if that described massive down pours as outer layer to dry up. If Gore Tex is used ventilating heat out is key to not get wet/ dry up. I use syntetic 1st layer and with woolen 1st layer I am not able to handle that. 2ndly I allways has one night set 1st layer completely dry (off course long legs, long sleeve) that I only use during night in my down sleeping bag together with very warm completely dry only night pair of woolen socks. BUT I dry my now not pouring wet synthetic 1st layer set on my chest during night. While it is still warm I recommend to put it there. The socks allways of woolen material (my feet do not sweat as much and wool is also much warmer even when it is become damp material) I put in my arm pits. I use WELL impregnated (w shoe fat) leather boots(they breath somehow). Shoes I put under sleeping bag and roughly around my knees while I sleep on my back or sideways normally. Now shoes does not freeze. Nicer in the morning if -10--》-25 degrees C! And I allways sleep well despite what town people (summer tenters) might think! I of course have a good warm sleeping bag and keep tent well ventilated. Down Jacket on top of sleeping bags if really cold weather. Sorry for long answer/comment!

That was so cool to get a little taste of Cape Breton. I have to admit, that it’s something I’ve heard a lot about, but never seen much of. I’ve done Gaspe twice, done the coast of NB, stayed a few times with friends in PEI, and driven to NS and spent a short time in Halifax, but cape breton? I know nothing. I’ve heard about it a lot, heard songs about it, but haven’t even seen a video.
Only complaint is it was too short a video, but I guess you had enough to do finishing the trip. I’ve spent many days out in winter, and camped into late fall, but how you managed things like sleeping, trying to stay dry etc… would have been interesting to see.

Hello,I was born on Cape Breton Island ,and it is beautiful. Our brother and his friends hiked in the highlands in areas that may have never had a human step there before. They were in a newspaper article regarding this adventurous hike. Thank you for exploring the highlands and best of luck on future adventures.
I spent a "honeymoon" in NS and I have more fond memories of NS than I do of my murderous ex. I remember a chicken fast food place in Cheticamp on Cape Breton. Also, the Keltic Lodge, Baddeck and Alexander Graham Bell's museum. Very Nice!

If you put a tablespoon of snow on top of the cowboy´s coffee, most grains will go down fast. If you do not have snow, you can use cold water (the colder the better).
Nice - we have the same situation here in NC. We have no snow (in fact we have had rain the past week +) but because there is snow at elevation, all of the access points have been closed off. Which sucks !

For future reference, if you pour in just a little cold water it will drive the coffee grounds to the bottom and shouldn't cool off the coffee.
Agree totally! Some 30 years ago I allways used to drink good quality "cooking coffee" (not instant coffee! Nor brewing=filter type) exactly that way in Sweden, Scandinavia. Exacly when it started to cook pour a little cold water on top and the grains will sink down. And we still drink a lot here. Older people still use "cooking coffe" grains (not equal to hole coffee beans but somehow coursely grained). Some outdoor people still does this especially the sapmi people up north.
Awesome trip boys. Freezing rain is the only type of weather I don't like. So dangerous.

Well, as you know, I live in Nova Scotia and I have been to Cape Breton many times but only between May and October. Excellent video, thanks. Also - my husband drinks 'kettle coffee' whenever he happens to be by himself, I suppose it takes getting used so give it a few decades!

Had to chuckle when you made the comment that there is no snow in the city - less than week later and we get 50+ cm with more to come. I expect the route you took got close to 80cm yesterday (Feb. 3). Off to xc ski in Merigomish.

Saw a youtube video recently where they mentioned putting a lump of snow in at the end will result in the coffee grounds going to the bottom so you can drink the clear liquid up top. No idea if it works.

awesome content. such refreshing change from the avalanches of survival tarp-camping for an overnight while going nowhere content. But the outpouring of camp coffee knowhow has taken me by surprise. I just push the grounds down with a spoon. they stay down, and i don't lose even a fraction of a degree of the precious heat.

Went camping in Keji a while ago and forgot whatever it was I was going to make coffee in. Mocha Pot I guess. But I had one of those ceramic Starbucks mugs with the slidey closer on top. I put coffee grounds and water in that then opened the slidey thing just enough to pour the coffee but hold the grounds back. It worked very well and was very very good.
I saw in another video that when you make coffee like this, you drop in a bit of snow, and it will take the grounds down to the bottom of your cup. I have never tried it, so I don't know if it really works.
Awesome video! According to your map at the start of the video, you passed just east of White Hill, the highest point in NS (535m). Did you guys consider deviating there or might you go in the future?
I trekked to White Hill this July and it was very difficult with the combination of flooded terrain and an almost entirely overgrown trail. I would assume it's much easier to make it in the winter when you can walk above all the trees, although with the winter challenges you presented in this video. Cheers!
