  • This is a quick short on the best way (really the only way) to remove thin-set mortar from a subfloor after removing tile. Watch the full video to see the whole laundry room renovation, but this info is probably the most helpful.

    I would suggest trying a good quality 180 grit scouring scotch pad disk first. They're rated for wood and may do the job. However, make sure the disk is speed rated for your grinder and replace often. You would still want the dust collar.

    Very interesting! Never saw that shroud before. Thanks for an informative video!! And good job on the grinding!!

    Most of these grinders need a 20 amp circuit. Mine were all 15 amp and so it popped my cb too often. FYI

    Do it the right way and add backer board

    Good tip. How would this work on old hardwood floors? Would it chew them up too bad for refinishing?
    Also: how would this method work for non-hardened adhesives that are somewhat gummy?

    • @Thingsyourhouseneeds
      @Thingsyourhouseneeds  6 месяцев назад

      If I had to guess, I would say you could sand and refinish a floor after using this. But the gummy glue would probably be a nightmare.

    hey @Thingsyourhouseneeds odds are stacked against me but the original tile from the turn of the century was covered with cheap homedepot tile. Original Tile, Thinset, New Tile. I've peeled back some areas and some are much better than others. Would this method work in removing the existing thinset on the original tile? or another insider tip? such a shame what they did to the tile

    • @Thingsyourhouseneeds
      @Thingsyourhouseneeds  8 месяцев назад

      Nope. This grinder will scratch (destroy) the tile underneath. This diamond blade chews through masonry but goes easy on wood. What is the tile made of that you are looking to preserve? Your only hope would be to use boiling water or steam to try and crack the thinset after removing the top tile. This might cause cracks in the grout for the hood tile as well, but that can be fixed. The only question is whether the good tile can handle the temp/humidity. If it can, you might be in business.

    I'm doing this right now .. i have the same set-up i think.... The wheel for concrete? Was your adhesive just gumming up the wheel like mine is? The second this thing hits it, the friction melts it. I found torching it and scraping works well in small areas at a time. Its just destroying hundreds of dollars of wheels... And now im outta propane too haha

    • @Thingsyourhouseneeds
      @Thingsyourhouseneeds  6 месяцев назад +1

      The diamond cup wheel is for masonry-type adhesives. So more of a mortar. I don’t know that it would work for softer gummy glues.

    • @chicoinchico
      @chicoinchico 6 месяцев назад

      @@Thingsyourhouseneeds I mean, this adhesive is from the 70s so it's brittle at first but when it's hit by a wheel going 5000 rpm it gets sticky pretty quick.

    • @Thingsyourhouseneeds
      @Thingsyourhouseneeds  6 месяцев назад

      @@chicoinchico, yea, I don’t know that this method would work for that.

    What would it cost to replace the subfloor? I have a 12 x 27 room that carpet was glued down on.

    • @Thingsyourhouseneeds
      @Thingsyourhouseneeds  6 месяцев назад +1

      12 4x8s might cost about $600. Plus another $600 for labor? My guess is you could have this done for about $1500.

    • @Thingsyourhouseneeds
      @Thingsyourhouseneeds  6 месяцев назад

      Yea. As long as it’s mortar and not some flexible glue. You can just pour the leveler on top.

    How much would you charge for this, to make the grinder attachments worth the buy??? Also, would a regular grinder blade at angle still works the same but messier I guess, right ?

    • @Thingsyourhouseneeds
      @Thingsyourhouseneeds  Год назад +1

      I wouldn’t use a regular blade. And I definitely wouldn’t do this without the shop-vac shroud. If someone tried to remove this stuff by hand, it would take days. For $50 cost (price of the blade) you can do this in 2 hours (if you are an armature like me - a pro would take 45 mins). You could probably charge someone $400+ to do this for them.

      A floor sander to remove thin-set mortar? Even if you could grind that stuff down, it would just fill the whole house with dust, no?

    • @SlickRickTPB
      @SlickRickTPB Год назад

      @@Thingsyourhouseneeds You just forget about your shop vac or something?

    • @Thingsyourhouseneeds
      @Thingsyourhouseneeds  Год назад

      The angle grinder with the cup/shroud/shop vac doesn’t cause any dust at all. The guy suggesting a rented sander would probably have a dust problem. That’s just my guess. Not sure if maybe he rents some kind of sander that collects the dust?
      I also just don’t think mortar would be easily ground up by a sander.
