The water tip works great when chipping thinset. Only thing I do different is use a garden pump sprayer to wet it down in sections. Definitely makes a huge difference when it comes to the dust created.

Great video, the water works great for controlling the dust, I just use a 2 gal garden spray jug to wet the floor, I also have a squeegee head for the vac, wet the floor good and suck up the mess.

TIP:I was removing thinset from concrete in a condo..and I would soak the thinset in 6ft x6ft squares with hydrogen peroxide...bought the peroxide for 2 dollars a bottle.
from Walmart.I would let it sit for 20 minutes or so....and then I just scrapped it off with a scrapping tool...it came off like butter...super easy....it also worked when I tore up an old wood floor and it was bonded directly to floor.Something to experiment with.
I've heard of using peroxide to clean grout. Using it to soften thinset is a new one on me. Thank you for sharing another option for removing thinset from concrete. Cheers!
Has anyone else tried this hydrogen peroxide method? I have some sporadic areas of thinset to remove on a floor ... would be great to just be able to scrape it off with no power tool needed.

@@jkc224u I let it sit fot 30 minutes ....then used a 4 inch heavy duty razor blade scrapper....easy peasy. This was a 45 year old hardwood floor glued to concretet that tore up ...the glue was old...but nothing worked till I used the HP

Awsome video job! Just when I was about to suggest you use water, you went for it. Your previous video had all of the safety tips some people really don't address. Peeps need to be aware that this work is dangerous and can easily put an eye out, or cause lung damage. I love that you are telling others to be mindful of their body. I took up a huge tile floor once with a chisel and a hand hammer. By the end of the second day couldn't even lift my arm in pain with a torn rotator cuff from repeated impact.

Thank you for this video! I am getting ready to remove tile from Terrazzo, which I want to restore when removing the thinset is there any chance that scraper thing is going to damage the concrete and or Terrazzo?

One major note...invest in a few plastic drop cloths. I used two for my entertainment center alone. Spread corker to corner and allow to drape over pretty much everything. Also use drop cloths to cover corners. Do they make smaller air chose attachments for use in narrower areas. I am doing cracked tile repair but only three non consecutive rows instead of the whole house....
Next question.....with my scenario of removing single rows will the impact of the hammer cause damage to adjacent rows...I am sure it can but want to know my risks since the tile pattern is not available anymore and want to avoid the collateral damage. I have exactly the tiles required....(left over from builder). But if any more than a coupe other crack then I am pretty much stuck with removing all of them...approximately 600... Texas Open Concept so basically the inside foyer, kitchen breakfast nook and living room/great room is all Inslee continuous run of tile all same pattern.

I’ve recently started my own contracting journey and I’ve come across when I do the tile demo the bolts on the scraper blades are always snapping or shaking loose, is that a result of running my hammer too hard or is it an unavoidable wear and tear?

Well done! When I did a similar job I actually gave up on the thinset -- I just took off the obvious highspots and then put on a floor leveling compound. One of the problems was that the SDS chisel I had was only a couple of inches wide, and I didn't want to use the grinder because of dust. Never seen that chisel/blade design so will use that in future!
If your thinset is solid and not breaking up do you actually need to remove if the increase in height is not a problem?
@@edwardgrier7096 I my case most of the thinset was very tough (I think it may have been epoxy based, and glued to a well sealed floor) and nowhere near crumbling, so I removed anything loose and highspots, used a thin layer of self-leveling compound and glued over it. Height was not a problem, obviously -- although that's not always the case. 13 years later the new layer of tile on top is holding up perfectly.
On another job I encountered really loose thinset -- is was probably cheap cement-based and not well mixed or applied to a dusty surface, but it came off easily.
My guess is that if the thinset won't budge with an SDS chisel then just go with a tin pour of leveling compound to seal it up and create a new sound base for a new glue/tile layer.
PS. Am not a pro, just a DIYer.

Floor sweep attachment for shop vac. Wet the floor down (don’t flood) with a Hudson sprayer. That will cut the dust down at least 80%.

What is the bit dimension such as width length? Where did you get it?
I've seen people build boxes that they can move and help contain the dust and then attach a vacuum to it.
Very informative video. I have to remove tiles like these from a bathroom floor that is a 1 1/2 inch concrete slab containing pex hot water heating piping. The 1 1/2 inch slab is on the second floor poured on joists and plywood. Other than making sure you exert force more from the side and not straight down do you see any problems using your method on my type of floor? Thanks a lot.
I would be a little apprehensive about using a demo hammer on 1 1/2 inch concrete. I think I would try to get them up by hand if possible depending on how many square feet you have. I'm not saying that it can't be successfully done, its just going to require a lot more care to execute. You have to be concerned with the force with which the hammer is striking as well as how frequently is striking. I would turn the dial down as far as possible and lean the hammer over as far as possible. They also make smaller demo hammers that dont hit with as much force. Good Luck!

Maybe try spraying water not too much just enough to eleminat the dust from the tool then shovel the stuff off
Good suggestion. That actually crossed my mind, but because there was no way to bring a waterhose inside without pulling it through the master bedroom, which was not part of the renovation, I opted to go with the bucket method. In retrospect, I could have also used a chemical pump sprayer. Thank you for leaving a comment.
Grinder is 5x faster creates more dust but with the right vacuum it should be good

Can you wet the floor while scraping?
How about wetting the thin set drying the removal?
Can you attach the vacuum to the scraper with a PVC 90 degree elbow and a flared pipe pointing at the floor to control the dust?
There are a lot of different ways you can rig it up that can work well. Some of the attachments for the vacuum may even work well.
Or use a grinder with a diamond blade to grind it away its a lot easier than a chisel but it does create more dust

Wish mine was that easy. No way that tool works with mine. We had to tear out the originally float and re-pour. Concrete float over wood subfloor. Good job.

My little brother and I were removing this .. We breathed in quite a bit should we be worried? We were both wearing a regular cloth face mask..
I believe the main concern is silica dust, which can be harmful. I would recommend that you conduct some online research AND consult your physician to determine if there are any steps that you should take..

For reference, we plan to remove tile and polish the concrete underneath as the final flooring.
@@Ajw214 If you are going to be using one of the big walk-behind concrete grinders, I would say yes. I have not used one before, but my main concern would be the dust created by the grinder. You will need an excellent way of containing the dust to make it safe and to prevent it from spreading to other areas of the home.
You need to buy a grinder and sharp the blade or you’ll spend a long time.
The best hammer for demolition thin set is the SDS max 14 amp
Can I use a spray bottle with vinegar and water to spray on the thin set?
I personally have not tried water and vinegar but i have had success with just water. The main goal is the saturate the remaining thinset so that its easier to scrape. A spray bottle could work for a small area. For larger areas, I still prefer a bucket, a water hose, or a pump canister chemical sprayer.

@@lookylooky100 Also remember, that the main reason for using the water is to keep the dust from becoming airborne. The scraper tool will remove the thinset even when its dry, the issue is the amount of dust that it creates in the process.

If you’re going to retile do you have to chip up all the thin set? Or could you just thin set over the old?
Generally, I would suggest removing as much old thinset as possible. A smooth concrete floor is going to give you an ideal surface to apply your thinset cement. Now if you are going to be applying a self-leveling underlayment first, then you can probably get away with doing a "less than perfect" grout removal depending on how thick you are pouring. Hope this helps!

How much does a demo job like this usually cost? Just the demo of tile and thinset.
That is a good question. I have never been asked to complete the tile demolition portion of a bathroom renovation by itself.
However, one concern with separating this task from the rest of the scope of work is avoiding the blame game. If tiles end up cracking after installation, the tile installer MAY say that the floors were not prepped properly by the demolition person. And the demo person is going to insist that they left the floors in good condition for retiling. Or if the tile installer notices issues after the demolition work is complete, they may charge you extra to properly prepare the floors before tile installation. The demo person is also going to need to leave the work area clean and ready for the next tradesperson when they finish their portion of the job.
@@RENOS4PROSJOES yeah im looking to just do the demo part. Im starting a junk removal business so I can do the demo and removal instead of getting hired by a demo company or renting a dumpster to a demo company. Cuts that middle man out. I dont want to install though. I know some trades require a license and some work requires a permit but you don't need that to demo stuff do you?
You would need to check your local building code requirements to determine if you need a license. Either way, it may be less hassle for you to find an installer that is willing to install on top of your prep-work before you begin demo. Some won't warranty the work if they don't do all the prep.
We got quotes of $3-5 per sqft and about $200 to haul away materials.
I always spray water on the thinset. Helps with the dust alot!
Wish I would have found this video sooner. After finally getting the massive amounts of thinset that was ridiculously used for a small space, our downstairs bathroom is COATED with a nice layer of dust EVERYWHERE. Any suggestions on best method to go about cleaning it all up to keep dust from just spreading further as we do so? I am thinking I can dampen parts of floor in small sections to pick up easier, but the ceiling, light bulbs, the bathroom vent that wasn't covered by mistake...walls...ugh. Already dreading the thought of going in there.
I wouldn't be able to get too specific without seeing it. But seal the room off (windows, doors. vents) and run an air scrubber while you work to keep the dust in the room.

This was less than 120-150 sqft. The tile came up fast. It took only an hour or so. Removing the grout was a whole different process. That part took another hour and half or so. Good Luck!

Forget the vacuum, you need a respirator for that dust!
What about buying a bag of cheap thinset and skim coating the floor. Just skip trying to remove the old stuff. I have 650sq ft to remove and I'm considering doing this. Will have to see if the grout lines stick up higher than the thinset after tile removal
Best way is adding water on thinset using a heavy machine it takes half the time without any dust
Wetting the surface will eliminate most of the dust
This is really hard to remove just me doing this by myself for 2 days made my arms feel like noodles
I rented a hexpin prep tool and floor maintainer at Home Depot which made the job 100x easier/faster.
