  • 18 Road’s Zippity Do Da is a classic Fruita ride. It is the most difficult trail in the North Fruita Desert and technically it’s not very technical, however, it presents serious challenges for "up and coming" riders. There are 2 very steep sections that should only be attempted by riders that are comfortable with riding Joe’s Ridge and or Slickrock in Moab because these section are STEEP. 18 Road is all about speed so get out here if that’s your thing. In this ride, I’ll take you along Primecut climb to Frontside, then we ride the hell out of Zippity Downhill. This is Outdoor Gold’s Mountain Biking Gold preferred way of riding Zippity.
    Unlike other trails in the Grand Valley that mostly ride on the hard Entrada Sandstone or the dense Morrison Formation, all of the 18 Road short loops reside on the barren Mancos Shale. The Mancos Shale is a basically a sea bottom mud that lacks compact rocks on the surface until you change rock formations at the higher elevations (Mesa Verde/Iles Sandstones) that overhang the area. Basically, you can expect loose dirt on occasion as well as unrideable conditions when muddy.
    Seasons: 18 Road can be ridden between March and December until the first snow. In winter, the trail can be ridden during a hard freeze in the morning, otherwise, it’s not a good idea to ride any of the trails. Once March arrives, 18 Road begins to thaw and dry. From the valley bottom the trails might look clean, but looks can be deceiving. The vegetated areas of Pinion Pine and Utah Juniper can hold the mud for an extended period of time. Once 18 road dries, the ground in the early season can be extremely soft and sponging until April. Not to mention bumpy cow tracks. Crowds can be extreme and by June, the cedar gnats will be present until late July. In long gaps in rain, the trail can get pretty loose. On Zippity, occasionally during the monsoon season, you can expect washouts and stormwater damage. Don’t be afraid to walk these sections when conditions aren’t ideal, however, without trail damage it is a not a good idea to walk to the trail at all if the trail is not damaged. Walking is not good for these soft dirt slopes.
    Getting there: the hardest part of riding 18 road. From US HWY 6&50 you cannot access the trails from the actual 18 road trails. The most popular option is to drive thru town to 17 ½ road (Maple St.) drive north of town to N 3/10 and turn east to 18 Rd. My favorite option is to drive to Colson and access 17 road, drive north of town to N 3/10 road and cut across to 18 road. OR take 6 &50 to 19 Road north to M road and then drive north on 18 ½ road which basically transitions to 18 Road.

    Nice video. I appreciate it that you didn't edit out the horrible climbs like most RUclipsrs do. It's part of the game...10 minutes of misery for a 30 second rush.

    Dude, sweet ride! That spot where you touched down is So frigging steep it's unreal! You also probably couldn't have picked a drier time to ride!! It's bone dry right now! Thanks for the vid! I've been down for a while with back to back shoulder injuries, so I've gotta live vicariously through others! At least until next week! Hello PBR and Western Rim! Thanks, Brutha!

      Jeffrey Maselli, its a steep one! I don't know which is harder, that or the entry into chutes and ladders. It is so dry that the wind the other ripped all the loose dirt off the some the trails leaving only the hard pack lol. Thanks man and get well soon!

    Yep - Prime Cut, Frontside...A sweet sweet area. You DON'T want to be there when it is wet. Can be overcrowded. Now with yuppie parents and their kids. I go there now during "off season"...the dead of summer, early morning or night riding.

    Sweet! Thinking about riding this trail the day before Outerbike in the spring. I figure something other than the chunky rock I'll be riding in Moab will be nice! Though I still may have to hit Horsethief Bench...

    • @OutdoorGold
      @OutdoorGold  7 лет назад +1

      Just between you and me and the internet. Horsethief bench is my favorite trail. Its our little piece of Moab in Fruita and a bit chunky, but the scenery is pretty solid. Thanks Huntstyle!

    • @TheCrashingDad
      @TheCrashingDad 7 лет назад +1

      Huntstyle - if you hit 18 road... Make sure to include Joe's ridge (finish off with Mojo's)..... AND zippity ;)... Maybe throw a quick PBR or Kessel run in there as a warm up ;)
      Although 18 road is "buff" and mellow compared to the lunch loops and Kokopelli, it's still SUPER fun!... Throw some speed in there.... Cheers!

    • @huntstyle
      @huntstyle 7 лет назад +2

      I gotta save some energy for Moab! ;)

    • @TheCrashingDad
      @TheCrashingDad 7 лет назад +1

      Huntstyle - if you just do zippity, you're only looking at maybe 30-45 minutes of riding ... Throw in Joe's/mojo's ;) you'll love it ;)

    Wow man! Really cool video! I love the Drone Cam playback ... A great idea!
    Hoping to make it out to Western Colorado a d Utah next fall, so I'm making a list of what I'd want to ride which looks like everything!
    Found my way here by watching a BCpov (?) video of Horsethief Bench.
    I'll certainly check out more of your content. Thanx for sharing!

    When do we get to see the bike check video?

    • @OutdoorGold
      @OutdoorGold  7 лет назад

      The official bike check video is on the itinerary at the end of December or in January with some product content videos when the trails here shouldn't be rideable. It will happen! The reason I haven't done the video yet is because I'm still running through some component changes (I have to get a new fork). But I'm close to being set. Thanks Senorrobbie!

    Did most of these Colorado MTBIKE trails start from multi use Or Some trail built just for bikes cool ass trail love the western slope

    • @OutdoorGold
      @OutdoorGold  6 лет назад

      4DRX! Yep, some trails in GJ are/were multiuse trails like the lunch loops. They actually used to be jeep and moto tracks that are only for mtb and hiking use now. At 18 road, I dont have the complete story, but of the trails were actually illegal tracks to start that became legal single track later on for MTB only, but there is alot of sweet dirt bike tracks around the area! Thanks for the commentary!

    How fast are you going on the ridge top?

  • @knordberg
    @knordberg 3 года назад

    I knocked myself out on 18 road, Kessel Trail. Ended up in GJ hospital with a severe concussion. Don't remember how I fell or the 6 hours I spent in the hospital. It's been a few years now and the memory of it still hasn't come back. I either hooked a pedal or was attacked by a pack of wolves. Can't decide.

    Camera really doesn't do justice to the second steep. Some serious pucker factor on the turn in. Although Western Zippity may be "boring", in the late spring when the flowers are blooming, it is pretty spectacular. It is also one of the few places at 18 road where you can almost always find some solitude.

    • @OutdoorGold
      @OutdoorGold  4 года назад +1

      I ride west zipp often, much better than prime cut crowding. I just want to convince people not to go out to it lol. Nailed it with the late spring flowers!
