LIKE THE PLYERS/WRENCH BETTER
👍
I think its so cool to see the old becoming new in edc. I can't recall exactly when channel lock introduced their small channel locks like 5" but while doing plumbing back in the 90's Alot of our trade would carry these with a 5 an 1 a knife, an we thought we had it covered for what is now edc. So cool!
I have just provisionally ordered two XS pliers with good expectation
They are great for bikers and bikers tend to own a "harem" of bikes :). I already had the "125 Cobra"
This XS cobra together with a small wrench plier and a Wera Bit Set is far better than any normal motorbike toolkit I experienced (hope my german-school-english can be understood?).
Yup! I saw em and thought "those belong in my bike kit!" Should have em in a few days.. looking forward to playing with my new... Pliers.. lol.
Your English classes I’m Germany are much better then our German classes in USA 🍻
I think the reason they didn't rubberised the handles is that the pliers will get out easily from the pocket, as they are meant to be kept there.
This. Exactly this. If it was not on purpose, that is the design spec for anyting EDC.
15/64... = wtf ?
My god I'm glad I'm in Australia and we(and nearly ALL the World use Metric !)
I was looking for a comparison between the 4" and the 5". Watched your 5" video before this one. I know the 4 is a EDC gadget of the moment, but the 5 seems more practical and useful with not much if a size bump. Easily keep this in a pouch or bag. I do like my small Vice Grips though. :) Thanks for the videos.
Luv my Visegrips!
Thanks for the video. I will stay with my 125 mm Cobra pliers (red handles). I often need to twist these pliers at various angles and move laterally on irregularly shaped objects -- the type of motion that breaks off multitool plier jaws. The XS jaws look too thin to take this use without busting off.
KNIPEX make awesome tools. But they've caught on in the EDC community. These new 4" Cobra XS are clearly targeted at the EDC community. Within the EDC mother the first things people do is cut off the coating from the handles. Now I'm sure that KNIPEX made these for hard use there's no doubt but they are clearly targeted for the EDC community.
Hi Ben, I know this post is a year old now but I thought this might be useful to you if you haven’t already done it that is! I pimped mine in a coupler ways, firstly I used electrical shrink wrap tubing on the grip handles which works pretty well and secondly I use a ranger band on the handles which has two functions. Firstly it holds the grip handles closed so no rattling and secondly the band acts like a reverse spring when you have made your adjustment to the plier for whatever size grip your applying the pliers stay on the nut or fitting without falling off which is really useful in a tight space😉
Bought the Knipex COBRA 6" and they are by far the best pliers I've ever owned.
Open them a click or two and they go narrower. I think they’re great. I’m a plumber of 17 years so i reckon I know something about the subject!
Fantastic ,miles better than any multi tool pliers !
Great for a EDC option, the all metal design might be much better than the rubber/plastic covered ones for in and out of a pocket, along with the thin profile? Ideal as i say for EDC.
You have have definitely tempted me to pull the plug and buy a couple tools...
You wouldn’t regret it.
I bought these a month ago and I find myself using them quite a bit. I usually keep them in the 5th pocket in my jeans, but I've found they can fall out sometimes. They're great little pliers, smooth and strong. I need to get a pair of pliers wrenches next.
Maybe you can add thermofit to the handles to prevent from sliding out of your pocket.
And maybe find a way to attach a lanyard.
It's obvious that the Knipex Cobra line is fastly becoming the new EDC must have pocket tool with after-market leather and Kydex sheaths becoming more and more available. This new version will attest to that. Very tackle box friendly and worthy of pack space for hunting and camping applications as well as on the job site. I'm getting one!
I just ordered a set to keep in my motorcycle tool kit that lives in my backpack.. just seemed like a handy tool to have anyway and I forsee using them all the time. Just like a knife, pliers are one of those things where you realize how handy they are once you have a set handy.
It's a sad commentary that the sheaths for these pliers cost more than the pliers themselves.
After 1 year I need to come back and say I got them 🤣!!
Help a LOT! For tiny tasks where my fingers are too big or in tight spaces. Got a lot of trouble fitting my 5" in an MT sheat so I got the 4" hoping for some luck and they heard me! Now I can't go out without that XS. Many times when need to turn a bolt and the nut need to behold those came in handy. Pair well and weights a feather and save space. Sometimes in the back pocket or front. Man, I regret not having those before. Got a pair for my wife and kids.
Sometimes I say the Germans are capable of over engineering a toothpick . Knipex brand are top notch world class manufacturers. I do buy Knipex and Channel Lock brands . Channel Lock has served me well over the years . I still have brand Loyalty . 2/23
I just replaced the 4.5" Crescent slipjoint pliers in my EDC carry with the Knipex 125. The Crescent opened to about 13mm while the Knipex opens to 25mm, or one inch. Much better. They're twice the weight, but still worth it. I appreciate the wider teeth of the 125 over the 100 or the Crescent. I have strong hands so these are VERY competent tools for heavy duty use. Cobras ROCK, and the German engineering is precise. Love it!
It's all about having something on you that will get it done. I am a mechanical fitter and when you are on site, up on a scaffold /mobile lift etc, being able to undo a support or disconnect something without having to go back to your toolbox is pure gold! A lot of the time you just need something to hold a bolt head while you spin off the nut (have a knipex 7 " plier wrench for that in my thigh pocket). The cobra snuggles nicely into a Leatherman pouch with my Charge tti. I have even used the cobra to remove metal slivers out of my hands - a tweezers on steroids 👍
I agree! That’s what it comes too. Being truly functional and useful when you néed it. The opposite is like using a car key to turn a screw!
That's what I do too! I have them in my pouch with my Charge G10 Earth.
They are perfect for light / medium EDC tasks . They are not made for some heavy works, but for everyday work around the house, bikes etc they are perfect. The Model 125 is in my car and this one is in the EDC organizer. I recently found out about the 125 and XS model, I don't know how I've lived without them so far !!!
I use mine for heavy tasks at work all the time and they do just fine
@@curtisratcliff9961I'd consider the demo in the video fairly heavy duty, maybe the original comment meant changing truck wheels or fixing tank tracks lol.
7:36 My dad severed the tendon that bends his thumb doing that in his mid 30s. Well… he was hitting at a shutoff lever with the palm of his hand. Couldn’t bend his thumb on his writing hand after that. On the bright side, his signature became virtually impossible to forge.
If you need the narrow jaws you can surface grind the red unit’s jaws down to match the thickness of the XS. Strength is not compromised as they are forgings and this allows you to get into narrow spaces, which is what I was after before the XS was on the market. If you do not have a surface grinder most any machine shop can do it for you. This allows you to have the leverage of the larger pliers as well as the comfort grips. Before there was Knipex I ground down combination wrenches for the same purposes.
I cut down my 5 inch knipex wrench pliers and it's still awesome but very pocketable, destroys all multi tools.
Know any horizontal sheaths for these pliers? Or anyone that custom makes leather sheaths?
Hey Ben, Jose from Puerto Rico. Good to see you. It's been a while since I last commented, but I saw this and enjoyed the review. I ordered this model and the slightly bigger 5" one. That little 4" model really packs a punch. I plan to have the 4" model in my jeans pocket alongside my Leatherman Crunch as a daily EDC. (Sadly, Leatherman will no longer manufacture the Crunch model}.
I'm thinking I might get these and plasti-dip the handles to make them more comfortable when used on tougher tasks. Useful review as always, thank you.
You should check out the pliers wrench instead. These are more for getting off stuff that you don’t mind marring. The pliers wrench won’t leave a mark and also have jaw covers for super expensive fixtures. Thanks for taking the time to make the video though. Helped me decide to get them both.
Getting a recommendation for this clip is quite interesting, as I very recently bought one of these.
Your phone listens to you you have to turn mics off
@@deykno87 I think it is much simpler: I bought from Amazon and they interconnect their networks.
Adjust your wrench hold close with one have tap end of wrench with a stick, torque will loosen the nut. No sore palm.
I think Knipex could design handle extensions to add torque leverage… that would solve plenty of problems
Ive really been wanting one of these for my reloading bench for swapping out dies, I’m definitely getting myself one, awesome review!
If you like knipex and do minor electric jobs at work. Check out the wire strippers they offer. They are the best /Rob
I’ll tell ya, I have been looking at them. I’ll probably pull the trigger on them soon.
Awesome, this combined with a Vic swisschamp is an alternative for a traditional plier based multitool
Today I'm carrying the Cobra XS with my SuperTinker. Leatherman Who????
Or with a Victorinox workchamp. That's my plan, I got this next is the workchamp
Which one better? The knipex 4 inch or 5 inch?
@@faizalkifli1844 with both you get the job done, it depends in how big your hands are and how comfortable you feel with the tool, also with the 5" you get more leverage
@@faizalkifli1844 the 200 inch is better.
Giver you more leverage
Have these love them incredibly capable and the thinness of the jaw allow for small detail work.
Yes they do, allows you to get into some pretty tight areas being thin like that.
Free deez nutz
Some added layers of shrink tape in the handles will help 😉
Got mine and i love them with the Milwaukee fastback 6 in one .perfect edc .combo
Good demo, Ben. I think I am going back to carrying a pair of cobra pliers in a belt sheath. I have been carrying a "fuse" or a "charge" or a "wave" for a couple of years (as a golf course equipment tech) and I lack a lot of capability with those choices.
Ya, multitools pliers just not my cup of tea. I am a robotics mentor. Seems like the multitool pliers don’t succeed at anything. The jaws don’t open well. The tip is not precise. The handles r always poor. I think I am sold on taking the plunge with kniper xs, a knipex sheath, I also carry 2.5, 3mm hex key , 7 mm wrench, and Klein electrician scissors, and electric tape. I can achieve most tasks from there
Nice demo, I would have given it a tap with a plastic dead blow hammer.
It is a light EDC tool. It is not a monkey wrench.
Finally got mine and loved it. All the way from Africa!
I see thin as an advantage on a 4” plier. Often you want to get on a small object and a fat plier just won’t do. Horses for courses. You are looking at 1/2” as a common size that a guy might be dealing with using this, but I much more commonly am dealing with 8-10mm hardware and sometimes smaller. Nothing often larger than 9/16 before I would get a bigger tool.
I did exactly what you did in the video the other day and changed an air chuck. Pocket pliers Worked great for that.
Just grind an inch off the ends off the 5" handles and dip them in plasti dip. I carry the 5" in my leatherman charge belt pouch with two bit kits, a leatherman micra and my leatherman charge ti clipped to my pocket, not a lot I can't fix with this setup. Although I did just order the 4" Cobra. I have a pair of the 10" I used everyday for 32 years underwater and still use them today.
The 4s kept falling out of my hand. And the torque obviously sucks. You need like a pipe extender.
I'd go with the fiver!
What you lose in jaw width/strength, you gain in ability to do jam nuts. Is it a perfect do-all? No. But that's a versatile thing to have in a lighter go-bag that can handle a variety of odd-jobs.
I'm sure these have their use but I don't think I'll be buying any. Pretty pricey for what they are The 5'' might be something worth looking at.
I recently got the 4” ones. I was carrying the 5” for a while. Looks like I won’t be disappointed by the 4” ones.
I absolutely love mine, they're so useful for basically everything. I carry them in a little leather pouch I made for them, and the pliers helped me punch the needle through the leather to sew it!
knipex have invented something that is to small with no leverage what's next 75mm with a higher list price. the 180mm are the best you can actually grip them and there cheaper these are just a gimmick
Thank you, been trying to decide which to get to replace carrying my wave. The 5" with wider jaw sold me thank you again.
What i can tell about the differences is that you can definitely cut a 3.5mm groove on a nut with the 100mm version on mild steel easily (Chinese scooter bolts aren't 8.8 for sure :D ). It will cut in them like in butter.
My buddy is a technician, he carries a 5" daily for a decade, these are the absolute best adjustable pliers by far i have seen and or used, once adjusted and fitted properly.....it will not slip, awesome tool.
Watching your video tells me the XS while very capable, is just too small for me.
I should stop watching your videos, Ben, because they are very good at convincing me to buy stuff, haha. Keep up the great work.
Ordered the Knipex Cobra XS a few hours ago. I was torn whether to get the 150 or the XS. The 150 could still fit my Maxpedition micro-style pouch, but it might be too bulky with all the other stuff. And while the XS lacks the comfort of the grips, I do not think I will use it for many things anyway.
And there is a sort of problem for a newcomer to EDC like me. Do the things I get for my keychain, pockets or pouches work to fill a need, or as a want just in case something happens? The XS is definitely a want. My work and hobbies rarely need pliers or a wrench, but I suppose having one when the time comes is better than not being able to help if I have nothing.
I really enjoy using my knipex tools, I will be looking to add these to the collection lol
My Knipex line is starting to build for sure. They just have so many good hand tools.
Just bought these and they work great for such a small tool . May replace my 7 inch Channel Locks as my favorite we will have to see
As far as the Pliers Wrench goes in comparison to this, which do you feel is actually more versatile? I kind of feel that the Pliers Wrench is better for my needs.
7 inch and 10 inch pliers wrenches and you are good as gold! You'll use them every day.
The cobras are more versatile, the pliers wrench is more specialty, because it's specifically for non marring in comparison.
I feel Knipex will upgrade to the push button lock on their next version of the 4” .
2/23
just bought one. amazingly good and solid. very very small too for EDC
Those pliers wrenches are massive
I found that when I choke down on the XS, it conform to my palm quiet comfortably.
Those little bastards have been my personal favorites for about two years now! Thanks for the video.
I have 4 sets of pliers wrenches 125,150,180, and 250mm, for me the 125 is as small as I would want to go. In fact because I’d like to have a set at home, work, car and dirtbike, I see myself doubling up on sizes before being interested in the 100mm ones.
Yeah, I believe in the functionality of these pliers my objection to them is the price. Are they very high quality? Yes. The problem is that if I lose them which is a very real possibility, I'm going to be really mad that I'm out almost $40. That's where instead I carry the Crescent 4-1/2 in. Mini Straight Jaw Black Oxide Tongue and Groove Dipped Grip Pliers instead. I don't want to lose them either but if I do I'm only out $8.
Just don't lose it those crescent ones are trash
love these but watch out they rust very quick!
Hadn’t considered that. Maybe a light coating of rust inhibitor would be helpful.
@@txtoolcrib good tip, i had it in my belt pouch for 1 week and it already rusted pretty badly. was a bit suprised. but none the less amazing edc pliers.
@@dimi7055 Maybe get a kydex sheat instead of leather.
Leather retain moisture.
@@dimi7055 Do you mean just on the machined tips of the plier head? Had no issues with rust myself. Ditched my Leatherman now because I had to carry a can of WD40 with it to stop it rusting, it rusts even if it hears a tap (faucet) running.
I've seen so many videos of people just going nuts about these I'm going to have to get some
Now, if they would do a 100mm version of the pliers wrench we'd have the perfect EDC combo. Then Knipex could make a version 2.0 of their 100mm cobra pliers, with a wire cutter at the pivot end of the pliers instead of teeth, a forged in 1/4" bit socket at the end of the upper jaw handle, and maybe a large flathead/pry bar molded into the lower jaw handle. Along with a pocket knife and some bits, this would take care of a lot of your daily tasks.
Yes! I was thinking about the same thing! This, let's call it Knipex Cobra Plus and a Victorinox Ranger, or Craftsman would make an excellent EDC combo.
Do you want a toothbrush too on that thing?
Wait for ir. Knipex Just announced its release this year.
It will be the Knipex 86 04 100 pliers wrench XS.
Wear a glove on your right hand. Problem solved.
Waiting your review about the new 86 04 100...
Might grab a pair' But I Definitely luv
My 10" Knipex Alligator Pliers, I pocket carry them Daily at Work"
💪😏
The pliers with button, is Inside/Precision
The pliers without button, is Outdoor Use
I asked Knipex...that was their response.
Those minis are just too small, for me.
I prefer the 7.25"
Those seem to cover, a wide range of tasks.
Nice video comparing them side by side with the small 5" pair. With the different operation of the adjustment of the jaw width, can you still open and close onto a fastener or nut with one hand?
Excited to hear your thoughts on this.
I really love the smaller size, and it seem to work well despite its compact design.
Oh they definitely work. Small size allows you to carry them anywhere, and they are surprisingly quite capable.
I put a 2 1/4” length piece of 3/8” AquaPex , comfortable , plus more mechanical advantage !
I owned the cobra and wrench pliers kn 16", 10" and 7"..... But I will not take 4" or 5" too small for my jobs.
However, I can see a lot of use for maintenance, technicians or even engineerings using this pliers. Have those in you truck too, small, light weight, don't bother space.
I get the most use out of the 7, 10, and 12 inch versions myself.
you could say these are great... in a pinch
Finally I bought this and I love it. My daughter says it looks like a finch. A pinching finch, I would say.
I noticed that the 5 inch ones say made in Germany. So are the 4" chinese?
Lol no 😂
No the 4 in ones also say made in Germany on the handle.
I definitely think I need a set of these. I edc a 4 inch proto adjustable wrench is use it almost every day at work. These could pair nicely with that.
I have the bigger set I use daily at work as a maintenance mechanic, I just ordered the cobra xs. I can't wait to try them out. I Can carry them too and from work in my pocket and use them 100% of my day to day life.
Wow! That demo was amazing! So much force on such little pliers
Love my 125 mm would love to add a pair of these. Great review 👍
Hi Jeremy a 125 question: The button has a tendency to get stuck when depressed and I have to jiggle the handle to get the button to disengage and "snap" open. Not always but can be annoying. Is this normal? Thank you.
I have both, the XS is on body EDC with a Super Tinker and the 125 is in the Vanquest Maximizer pouch.
@@bryanstone654 hi Bryan. Ive experienced this problem on occasion. I've experienced it more with the larger set I use at work I find this happens more when I try to adjust after use/hard use. It seems to be an intermitent problem. A little dab of a light oil seems to help. Hope this helps.
@@jeremyspaulding7735 Hi thanks i have 10w nano oil and WD40. also 30w machine oil. Where do I apply/aim the oil?
@@bryanstone654 just a bit on the pivot pin itself

Very useful review. Thank you.
Thank you for watching.
Thanks for the video!
The 5" are so much better imo.
Not for EDC or mobule "emergency: reasons. I throw my tools into my car trunk. The bigger versions are in my workbench/toolbox. They are top big and too heavy to be used as edc or trunk tool.
Why not have both ? They are super cheap. You could order a 100mm , a 125mm for the price of a leatherman ,and have change for a victorinox farmer/tourist/ recruit/ take your pick ?
I have used knipx as a mechanic and now I sell tools and knipx you just can't beat knipx there is no other companies that can make a tool that great 👍 😉 😀 😊😏
They are certainly one of the best.
A gloved hand, or a bandanna wrap around those handles, less pain.
What calipers are those in the video?
Great review. Just got a pair. Looking forward to putting them to work.
When he said “release these nuts,” For a second I thought he was referring to Joe Biden and his cabinet..
Nothing to do with this subject of tools, you need to take a chill pill
I'll stick to my much more affordable Channellock #424, or the #524 slipjoints.
I've been tempted by these but seeing how wide open the handles are during use puts me off.
I understand you get more jaw capacity than I do with my little Channellock #424, but they have been enough and the handles aren't so wide open throughout their effective jaw capacity.
And everything about them I feel keeps me from trying to do more than they could handle.
I get these, but for me they're just trying to do way more than I'd need a pair of pliers this small for, and I'd rather have something that knows it's limits.
It seems to me that Knipex is “fishing” for reactions about maybe their new locking mechanism and new milling/manufacturing procedure. If you see the final surface on the XS compared to the regular Cobra it is a lot smoother. They launched this EDC version of a new cobra line with a wider range of sizes to be launched maybe in the - near - future. Also the new locking mechanism is in between Cobra and Aligator, in fact closer to Aligator with a non visible locking pin.Other than that the XS does not look gimmicky at all.Great video my friend!

I wish Knipex made more than plies, i have a few of their tools and they are top notch!
I wish they would expand their lines a little myself.

Very nice review 👍🏽👍🏽
Can you try to grip on a pipe a step on the plier?
It doesn’t work very well on this model. I think it has to do with the jaws being so narrow.
?
Need an xs version of the wrench pliers.
Would be nice for working on small nuts and bolts. Some of the larger ones can be a bit too big at times.
