Deepak Nohawar i think you are seeing it the wrong way. carl meant it as in something Markus had not seen before, like the desk he had seen before. if we go by your logic, then the last painting ‚prisoner‘ means Carl and Markus do not exist.
I'm seeing it as blue represent the androids and red the humans. Markus dont know if he's also human, or just an android surrounded by humans. He doubts about himself just being a machine, or also a person, a ''human''. His shirt is blue, representing that everyone see him as an android, and so it's how he represents himself, with some red ''glitch'' of painting, since some people, Carl for example, also see him as an individual, as a person on his own. The background is red, representing that Markus is sourrounded by people with their own ''themselves'', people having their own identity, still with some blue in it, cause he still sees some androids around him. His face has both blue and red stains, cause he's trying to figure out if he's more android or more ''human'', if he also has, and also deserves, his own identity. Did I totally think too much about it ? Surely. Did I enjoy it ? Totally. Am I happy with this conclusion ? Absolutly.
I seriously love his portrait of Carl in the "Humanity: Comfort" painting. It reminds me a lot of Van Gogh's style, and I'm already a huge fan of Van Gogh.
I love how compared to the first several paintings that markus has done, where he copies from real life, his brush strokes are straight across the canvas- boring and predictable. then when he starts depicting life and imagining, his strokes become more colorful and abstract. I'd honestly be right beside Carl saying oh my god. i absolutely love d:bh
Here's my interpretation of each painting keep in mind I haven't finished the game. Androids and fate: we see Markus in the garbage dump for androids. This is his personal fate when he is branded a deviant and sent away. Its also the fate of all androids, to be thrown in the trash when no one has further use of them. Androids and hope: we see him holding a chain that is not connected to anything because the hope of androids is to be unchained, free. Androids and pain: ...he's in pain. not sure if there's any more meaning to that Androids and sadness: we see his hands bound and covered in thirium (android blood) being bound brings him despair and the thirium could potentially mean having blood on his hands in the future. Humanity and anger: we see the face of an angry android. could this be frustration felt for humanity in general? Humanity and comfort: we see Carl. Markus feels comfort around Carl because he is the only human that treats him like a person rather than a piece of property which in turn gives Markus the desire to comfort Carl. Humanity and empathy: we see a pair of blue hands and a pair of red hands. Android blood and human blood. I'm reminded of a quote by Shakespeare "if you prick us to we not bleed"? This line was used by a Jewish character as a means of saying that they feel suffering just like everyone else does. Empathy is understanding the emotions of another if androids and humans can both feel suffering then doesn't that mean that they are both alive in some sense? Humanity and hope: we see a hand reaching for a mechanical one. This could mean that humanity's hope is not to shun and hate those who are different but to reach out with understanding. The mechanical one appears to be in a position to help up a human possibly meaning that where humanity is concerned the only hop androids have is to show compassion to those who have mistreated them. Identity and androids: its a self portrait. again I'm not sure if this one is any more significant. Identity and despair: we see an android weeping covered in android blood. This could mean that he feels despair for being a member of a slave raise who toil and bleed only for another? Identity and doubts: we see yet another self portrait. could this mean that he doubts having an identity? that he might not be a real person? Identity and prisoner: we see what looks like Markus and Carl but both of them are faceless. could mean that Markus views himself as a prisoner to his life. Even though he considers Carl to be a father to him at the end of the day he didn't choose to be a caretaker. Hell he never had a choice. He exists only to be bound to another What do you think? does anyone agree?
+Trev Stimp Identity and Androids I think is that Markus sees himself as an Android. Hence the simple self portrait. As for Androids and Pain I think it's both his own pain that he feels as an Android and the pain he thinks the other Androids are feeling too.
Instead spending time on game design, dialoge, etc They should spend x10 more time for 15 painting scenes with 3-8 stages while painting Isn't hard to do but player see only 2 paintings so they can't see 13/15 already so why make spend that much time on it
I love how the developers made it so when Markus is copying an image you’re just swiping to the right but they make you perform more dynamic movements when actually creating the painting it’s a really subtle detail but it’s really cool showing that Markus is capable of free thought
It could be that the painting tapped into a feeling deep inside you. Art tends to do that. Ever notice that you mind feels over-stimulated to the point of exhaustion after a day in an art museum?
Onyx Crescent Music for sure. Soundtrack (or soundtracks I should say, they made 3 different music lines from 3 different composers) in this game is awesome. :)
@@SHADOMEGA7569 yeah I think the option is being optimistic goes like "no , not all humans are the same . Some of them understand they can't stop us from being free forever" and also "I cared for an old man , he showed me humans and Androids can live together"
I think... i think Markus was already a deviant before the incident with Leo. I think THIS was the first second that Markus became 'alive'. Carl asked him to think of something - completely random - and asked him, not ordered, "What does it make you *feel?* " Then he never told Markus to go ahead and paint. Didn't prompt him to do... anything. Just inquired him to act on his own free will. In this moment, Markus had his own free will. Not violently forced, or viciously broken free of, but... gently given. Some of you may ask, "Well then why was Markus forced to break free from his programing if he was already deviant? When an Android becomes deviant, they loose the shackles that force them to carry out orders." And you have a point. But being a deviant is more than just 'resisting orders'. Its the android developing emotions, FEELING, empathizing, hating... I think, when an android truly becomes a deviant, they have to develop emotions first. That gives them the will and modivation to fight back and break free from their programing. So with Markus, who had a beautiful home, a kind, LOVING and gentle master who treated him as an equal... why would Markus ever fight back? Why would he refuse orders, that are really only requests, that have a small expectation to be denied if Markus does not wish to follow the inquiry. Like any order or task we give a normal human. So... why would Markus ever 'break free' if he was never a prisoner in the first place? He only ever felt like a prisoner when Carl actually ordered him to not defend himself - and what an odd order to give an android in the first place - and Markus needed little coaxing to break his programing. In that sequence, Markus' animation was VASTLY different from Kara's and Connar's, simply because he never stopped MOVING. He acted like a human, bent on *breaking that damn wall* and had no hesitation when charging, while the other two used their hands, and only their hands. Like, as if what they were doing was so vastly foreign and almost wrong? And part of them seemed to still want to obey their programing, but have a will that's telling them 'NO'. So... i guess... with this mindset of what it truly deviant means to be a deviant... I think Markus was a deviant from the start. Because, he LAUGHED. Something that made me do a double take when i first saw it, when we first meet Carl, the elderly man says something that made Markus smirked and huff softly - a tiny laugh. An Android. That laughed. And then here, in the studio, when Carl asks him to paint with feeling, the WAY Markus says "Oh, but Carl, I um, i don't think i can do that. Its not within my programing..." That was NOT how an android talked. Ever. They never phrase words like that, never looked away, shifted their height, when talking. They would say bluntly, "I am sorry, but that would be not within my programing." They never had a hint of hesitancy in their voice, never sounded unsure or nervous. But Markus did here. He sounded, and LOOKED human whenhe painted. Markus was a deviant from the very beginning. Carl just never gave him a reason to disobey.
Great breakdown. I more or less agree, and I think it just has to do with how Carl "raised" Markus. Carl is kind, insightful, educated and knows the value of self-expression. I do think he helped develop Markus into the being who *chose* to deviate. In this way, all deviants are deviants before they deviate. They have feelings and emotions long before they ever decide to break their programming. They just need that incident to give them a reason to not obey a command and truly do as they wish. Look at Kara. In the short time she is reset, she comes to fear Todd, and care for Alice extremely quickly. You can see her registering these thoughts, and being ordered to not move, when she fears for Alice's safety was the last straw for her. She had the feelings and knowledge beforehand, and then chose to deviate from her instructions.
I'm not exactly an expert on paintings, but Markus' paintings are amazing. I only drew a few during the game, but here I see them all and look with my mouth open. I have to say that they cared a lot about that game

This is so important, it shows every detail of his personality right at the start of the game. It's interesting to see how he feels before even knowing how to feel. so interesting how he sees Carl as a "comfort", but at the same time, as a "prison of his identity". Explains a lot about how pretty much any other android would feel. Happy to be serving it's owner and concluding it's purpose, and the creation of deviants, when they kill their owner and see no other purpose. They feel *fear* with an abusive owner, but in their mind, maybe freedom seems even more fearful, after all, it comes with all that "then why am i alive?" Existential crisis
Those two paintings strengthened their father-son relationship for me. He considers him family, that's why he finds comfort in his presence and at the same time he feels responsible for taking care of Carl because of the same bond.
I thought that in the prisinor painting he meant that Carl was also a prisinor //Carl cant move freely or do smth simple without aid. But thats my thinking
You know what I realized about all of these paintings??? Is that they all foreshadow what will eventually happened... (Depending on the players choices)
Makes you realize how deep and well thought out game it is isn't it? I thought all those pictures were just random abstract images of what we chose based on our feelings at that time.

Alternative Title: Markus being Bob Ross for 11 minutes straight
10:01 markus was asked to draw something which doesn't exist he drew himself as on this point he didn't know if he has his own existence or something whether he matters thus Identity-doubt.
Deepak Nohawar i think you are seeing it the wrong way. carl meant it as in something Markus had not seen before, like the desk he had seen before. if we go by your logic, then the last painting ‚prisoner‘ means Carl and Markus do not exist.
@@rokukou well you could say their relationship is not those of prisoners?
Oh
Absolutly.

This game has way too many memes potential
Markus just opens his eyes to see nothing because the paint he was using is dry
Here's my interpretation of each painting keep in mind I haven't finished the game.
Androids and fate: we see Markus in the garbage dump for androids. This is his personal fate when he is branded a deviant and sent away. Its also the fate of all androids, to be thrown in the trash when no one has further use of them.
Androids and hope: we see him holding a chain that is not connected to anything because the hope of androids is to be unchained, free.
Androids and pain: ...he's in pain. not sure if there's any more meaning to that
Androids and sadness: we see his hands bound and covered in thirium (android blood) being bound brings him despair and the thirium could potentially mean having blood on his hands in the future.
He exists only to be bound to another
What do you think? does anyone agree?
+Trev Stimp
Identity and Androids I think is that Markus sees himself as an Android. Hence the simple self portrait.
As for Androids and Pain I think it's both his own pain that he feels as an Android and the pain he thinks the other Androids are feeling too.

I think... i think Markus was already a deviant before the incident with Leo.
Cussundria Kneal cool fact
Maybe u r true, an android never talks like that, cuz Marcus talked like human😮
THIS. This is why I thought Markus was rA9
Yeah, because he is ra9, ra9 androids never have a reason to disobey, even if they were deviants from the beginning.

And just to hear Carl go “oh my god”
