I drive an 05 FWD Corolla and I’m just north of y’all two hours in Cheyenne. I can attest, dedicated snow tires are absolutely worth the money! When we had our first blizzard I was cruising along other jeeps with snow rated mud tires stuck on flat road.
Love your videos. One thing to consider is not spinning the wheels so much. In my experience with snow driving over the years, you want to keep wheel spin to a minimum to keep snow stuck to the tire as it rotates so it comes back in contact with the snow on the ground. That’s why snow tires have lots of sipes, to hold the snow on the tire. Snow sticks to snow better than rubber sticks to snow. Just my two cents. Thanks for the video!
Tires make a lot of difference. I ran the 3-peak snows on my Honda Si and made a huge difference. Also went to a 17" wheel from the stock 18" wheel for more sidewall and that helped a ton. Those are now on my '23 Integra but I haven't had an opportunity to test them on the new unit. If it gets gnarly around here, I will use my wife's '20 Acura RDX, my '22 Bronco, or the '01 F250 diesel.
i was thinking the exact same thing. I thought they were going to compare front wheel drive to 4x4 but instead they compared front wheel drive to driving with chains. Just use snow tires!
I’m pretty sure that Tommy gets roasted in the comments because he usually does not know what he’s talking about or how to drive. That just doesn’t make for good automotive videos. That and he’s always kissing EV butt...
Interested to see how actual chains work. Also would like to see it on a 2wd pickup. Had a 91 Chevy with the one wheel peel and it wouldn't go out of my driveway. Installed chains and not only did it go, but I pulled a Ford Ranger out of the ditch and the road was so slick you could barely stand up on it. My dad said in the 1950's that nobody had a 4wd, they just chained up and drove all through the woods.
I like the idea of seeing the difference snow tires and other aids make on a common car. Pretty sure the cables aren't meant to be spun up at high speed by design. The braking distance test in snow is a real eye opener and should be one of your standards for all vehicles in the fleet. Check that before changing tires. 😉
It was interesting seeing the difference the chains made. I had a 2wd ‘07 Element with a 5-speed standard trans. For the winter, I had 4 studded snow tires & it did really well in the snow. If it was AWD, it would have been outstanding.
Of course Tommy would be dumb enough to do that!! He’s like “Oh my 4WD Wrangler doesn’t even make it, so let’s try a 2wd RAV4.” Roman is the only reason he has this job. Tommy needs to start his own Mini channel for nobody to watch..
During the really bad winter of 06-07 in CO, I threw Hankook I-Pike studded snow tires on my old half-ton Suburban. It was an unstoppable beast. They never plowed my road and that tank did not care...
In high school had buddy with 2 wheel drive Ranger, snow tires and sand bags in bed. I had a 4 wheel drive Ranger with crap tires. During snow storm i was trying to keep up with him and he was gone. Not even remotely close. Tires are everything.
I put winter tires on a 2010 Camry SE and did fine in snowstorms and ice. I wouldnt have taken it off road other than my unplowed driveway. Passed quite a few 4wd trucks and SUVs on my way home from work. Once winter was over I just put the summer tires back on.
My 02 SVT Ford Focus came with summer tires and living in Pa we can get some bad winters so I bought new wheels with all season tires. They were ok but I still slid a lot, when they wore out I bought Bridgestone Blizzak dedicated winter tires and it was a night and day difference. I drove home from work in a ice/sleet storm and I was amazed at how well they did.
I think it was very successful, you managed to entertain a wide audience. I thought it was a great video. Where I live we only see snow once every 4 or 5 years & even then it's only 1 to 5 inches & that will shut us down.
tires make the difference. i hate getting stuck. all my vehicles are 4 x 4s. real chains rather than cables would probably help a lot. A for effort. fun video.
Couldn't agree more on the tires. Worked a pipeline in WV in the winter. The F150 struggled up and down the hills. Replaced the wrangle ATs with new ones and had no issues climbing 35 degree grades. Biggest issue then was approach angles.
I always liked the look of these first gen RAV4, they look like they would be pretty capable off-road even for a small crossover. I'm super curious as to how the AWD version of this car would have done, I was really disappointed when I found out this was only FWD.
Chains work better in the deep snow because they dig deeper into the snow. Cables like you have there, work better on icy roads cause the cable bites into the ice better.
All that slack you have in the cable chains means those are not the right size for those tires. With the right ones you would have had no issues witht he cables.
i have seen TopGear with jeremy clarkson all you need offroad in 2wd, is POWER and SPEED!!! :D:D And im from Sweden and i will never drive in the snow without proper snow tires
Um, well, lol Take away is you have accepted the terminology for what is called "Snow Cables" vs "Chains". Outside of that, proof has once again shown that cables are an awful waste of money. You are frankly lucky they did not snap and wrap around the inside of the wheel well. Pain in the butt to deal with all the way around. FWD is best with studded snow tires and "chains" if need be. Of course, that is true with RWD as well. Although, I was impressed with those plastic things you put on as a temporary solution. IF someone had to make a trip across a mountain pass that required chaining up, that might prove to be an effective, cost worthy alternative to paying for a set of good snow "chains"
I've had three 4 wheel drive ravs that I had bought new. I've had other Toyota's besides Ravs too. I ran 400,000 mi on one Rav, they're great cars with great engines if you buy the right years. All three had early transmisson problems however and i never was hard on the transmissions. They're dogs, for power but great gas mileage. Great off road cars. I never got stuck. 4 wheels makes all the difference Toyota Ravs apparently had a problem with Tranmissions. My last one was a 2009 and it had transmisson noise at 100,000 mi. The 2009 also was a year that they had a cold start noise which was actaually a bad engineered part rattling around atthe top of the engine. After the warranty expired is cost 800,00 to get fixed. My first I think, 1999 Rav, the transnmission had a hard shift. I traded it before it got worse. I had ran about 200,000 mi on it. My 2004 tranny problems started with hard shift and then i finally had to have it rebuilt. I took it 400,000 mi and it was still running strong when I traded it.. Other than that I loved them. They were good and dependable after they fixed my transmissions. You can haul a lot in them with the seats down. All in all I think they're good cars but i don't trust their transmissions. Research common problems before buying certain models. They're good dependable cars mostly but they have some bad models and even bad engines in some models.
I didn't take Tommy for a watch guy but should figure as there's a lot of crossover with watch and car guys ha. Nice Mission to Saturn Moonswatch Tommy.
Love to see the 2WD testing.. You broke the cables on the first run. And they seem to be too large for the tires. Please do a video with some Blizzaks or similar! Would be cool to see some Blizzaks on the old RWD 240 Volvo too.
I like the idea of this video, but I'm surprised you even tried doing this without proper winter tires. At least this video highlights the importance of those in a frustrating way 😅
Nice watch Tommy! I'm not a huge fan of the MoonSwatch, definitely prefer the real Speedmaster but it's still pretty cool, and for sure much better than the Apple wristphone :D
definitely need better tires at least and some snow chains, but just imagine some all weather tires on it and 4 wheel drive. then you got something. I do think those all season tires were really bad, I ran some falken 950s that do have tire blocks for snow and they helped when Texas got hit with snow two years ago. Really good 40-50 mph handling, for a all season m+s ( not a snow tire). Note: we didn't get as much snow as you got in this video.
street tires and an open diff means essentially no traction. Doesn't matter how much clearance you have, or power, or articulation, or gear ratio or driving experience.
I have those type of snow cables (chains) and they've never slipped on me hmm..I'm sure you guys had the orientation right because its printed on the plate which side goes where
A vehicle with tow points, imagine that. I swear looking at modern vehicles, I think the vehicle recovery industry has lobbyists in the automotive engineering industry.
The first two years of production (1994-1995) was only 4x4 thus the name RAV4 means recreational activity vehicle with 4WD, the fwd version came out in 96 and olny for the us αnd Japanese market, Europe and Australia never got it.
I have a 97 with awd no abs and i believe it does not have the limited slip. Would love to see what limits you guys find. I am in colorado feel free to reach out.
It’s not heavy enough to use the floor mats trick. I had that same problem with my Ford focus I used to have. Should’ve aired your tires back up after putting those on.
Those snow cable things are probably good at ripping up cv boots. I feel living in Colorado, people should kinda know fwd isn't very good at off roading in the snow. Not really a surprising video.
Those cables are way too big. When they are big they will be loose and when you spin your tire it will cause them to come off like they did. You should get REAL CHAINS and it would be just fine. Or cables that fit properly. Try the peerless chains it's a hybrid chain and cable that self tighten. And are really easy to put on compared to chains and cables.

I would be interested in seeing how a good set of snow tires perform compared to chains on the standard tires.
i was thinking the exact same thing. I thought they were going to compare front wheel drive to 4x4 but instead they compared front wheel drive to driving with chains. Just use snow tires!
Regardless of the fail, the Bronco looked amazing in the video.

@alanj7306 anxious to watch your new RUclips channel so we can see how it's done.

Please TFL, try the course again with PROPER tires on this Rav4. It would make a WORLD of difference
It's nice to see a real world example of how it can go unscripted in snow. I don't call it a fail. 😀
My AWD 2004 RAV4 was a beast in the snow, not to mention how great the turning radius was in that tiny thing. Perfect car to fit by people

A perfect example of why good tires are so important!

Need to take the y’all’s new ranger and y’all’s bronco on the course with the snow on it! Awesome video! Thanks 👍
Alex had a look of genuine angst on his face at the sight of the "chains" haha
Those tires seemed to have aged out and lost all of their pliability in the cold. New snow tires with decent soft rubber in the cold will help.
looked liek summer tires basicly.... what some try to drive with on winter roads....
The Bronco was the real star of this video. It had no issues pulling another car, in snow, uphilll.

Snow tires is the answer. One of the best cars for snow I owned was my 74 Subaru DL FWD with bias ply snow tires on the front, never got stuck.
Wow, this video does show how monstrously capable the Bronco is!
I think it would be interesting to see what studded snow tires would do.

I've heard that chains mainly help on ice, but they don't help as much in the snow.
