Love the deep blue color The no frills approach is great.. And you pay for your meal through the app. Cheap doesn't have to be nasty, and I'm just waiting for a snooty journalist to snark at it, only to be ratioed. 1 class across is great cuz honestly it doesn't make a difference on a 4 hour journey and every review claims that seats are good design and comfortable. It will allow more people to travel across who otherwise would have avoided the trip. If this continue, it might become a part of local culture, with people who may use it several times a month Trains make sense in Europe because the distance between cities isn't that high, and you'll end up spending more time to reach the airport than actually flying ✈. They should include the seat selection on the app though
Lovely video - thank you for posting. I won't ever use this service though because I'm taller than average and I find my shoulders are about where the normal headrest is, so this seat design would be highly uncomfortable.
I'm 6'2" and have a tall upper body. Eurostar's old seat headrests used to catch me under the shoulders, so I know what you mean. These were absolutely fine in that respect. And unlike GWR seats, they passed the comfort test for 4.5 hours. Heck, I was in them for 9 hours yesterday with an hour break!
@@seat61 That's good to know: I'm about the same size and didn't fancy a trip up to Edinburgh on an ironing board! This sounds like a more comfortable alternative.
@@seat61 Does any train operator now understand the concept of first class? If you would travel on an aeroplane in first class for 5 hours and be offered either crisps or a sandwich what would you think of them? I’m travelling to Penzance next week from Paddington, on the 1204. You might think that train but would have some form of catering? It doesn’t. The only train that does is the 1304 to Plymouth. For a country that invented the railways (but not of course the pullman) it’s a bit of a disgrace. Lumo it’s obviously not intending to try things any differently.
I am slow catching up with this. The train seemed pretty empty and the background sound seemed to indicate a bit of a jolly. Was this an excursion for media types?
The test will be how well the trains are maintained and cleaned when in constant use not when new. But what would be really revolutionary is a nationalised train service, with good value, publicly subsidised tickets on all services that reflects and understanding of how important a decent, affordable train service is to the country.
@msee - I do remember those wonderfully well maintained and spotlessly clean BR trains of the 70, 80 & 90s let’s get back to those halcyon days. Can we also add industrial action by RMT on a regular basis to bring whole network to total standstill to truely return to the good old days.
@@neilboulton9813 Typical response. The railways back then were deliberately underfunded and people like you seem to forget that the standard of living enjoyed by ordinary working people were achieved by the result of industrial action by unions over time. But I guess you would rather public subsidies are used to support an expensive system that guarantees dividends and profits for private companies.
@msee ha ha I am afraid you were either not around or you have very short and selective memory. The only things the unions in those days managed to do was make themselves internationally uncompetitive and effectively put themselves on the economic scrap heap. I would suggest you read up on the self imposed decline in the British ship industry and point out the BRITISH owned car industry. The only reason the railways survived was because they were a monopoly and were not subject to being completely uncompetitive with the rest of the developed world.
@@neilboulton9813 The unions didn't make English industry uncompetitive. it became uncompetitive because of bad management and a reliance on the captive markets of it's crumbing empire. If the management of English industry was as enlightened as that in Europe or worker participation was encouraged and valued this class ridden country would not be in the mess that it is in now.

Looks really promising but I really wish it had a stop in Doncaster. LNER's fast Edinburgh trains have their first stop out of London in York and CrossCountry's Edinburgh Services run via Leeds. And both York and Leeds also have TransPennine services too. A stop in Doncaster to provide better connectivity between South Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, Humberside and Scotland seems like it should be a no brainer to me.
If they stopped at Doncaster and abstracted revenue from LNER, unconnected with their stated mission to compete with airlines between London, Newcastle & Edinburgh, they would fail the vital 'Not primarily abstractive' test and be denied permission to operate by the ORR. Which is also why the don't call at Peterborough York or anywhere else - except the air-connected cities and Morpeth, which LNER don't serve so that's OK.
@@seat61 Oh, don't get me wrong, I get the logic on paper. Just can't help but think that in practice the idea that it's taking revenue from another company/companies when they're not providing as good a quality or as convenient a service is a bit disingenuous. Even if there was a stipulation of pick up only at Doncaster northbound and drop off only southbound to avoid taking the Doncaster-London revenue (which is already well served, albeit by a poorer quality product by the looks of it) that could make a difference. Equally though I think in general that path allocation and timetable planning needs a major shake up. With limited paths I can't help but think we need to move away from allowing 5 car trains to run on the mainlines and insist that where 5 car sets are used they're used in multiple and split en route if necessary to create maximum capacity from the paths available, though that's a different matter entirely.
@@johnwood1948 In the British model, competition happens when the franchise is let (government gets best value price), not at the public-facing stage. Open-access competition is allowed, but under conditions - it must add something extra, like linking London and Hull, or Morpeth, or aimed at airlines, rather than taking existing revenue from a government-let contract.

Very nice - for Londoners wanting a cheap trip to Edinburgh. Not a lot of use for people in all those places it whizzes through. And of course, this is not a new operator, just a rebrand of one of the existing big boys. Train itself looks fine though - decent seats a big improvement.
The whole idea of an express train is that it doesn't stop in a lot of places. The local places are served by local trains. They'll take you to a major station where you can catch the express train.
The idea here is surely to capture the Newcastle and Edinburgh air traveller market. Hopefully they can get some other paths to support that concept more comprehensively.
@@BJHolloway1 Yes, you're probably right. But they might capture even more with a few more stops. Of course it would - but permission to operate would then be DENIED! Remember that all open access operators have to pass the 'Not primarily abstractive' test'. Lumo is not allowed to stop at York to hoover up LNER's existing revenue (Lumo is going after airline passengers, and where are the Ryanair passengers at York?), Morpeth was insisted on by ORR as LNER don't call there, this stop is therefore something new, and hey presto, approval granted!

Nice new trains, decent prices, just a shame our speed limits keep the journey time over four hours.
Its the blue that gets me also!
Like the hull trains iet😍😍😍
Nice vid. Let’s see how long it lasts with the cheap fares
Excellent. Beautiful looking train. Love to do that train journey in the springtime. 👍😊
Good news about the comfort of the seats. Most other reviews of class 800/801/ etc have said they were appalling. (Esp on GWR, my home turf). So there is hope if silly companies refurbish.
Nice video, thanks.
How are they silly?
@@Bungle2010 They’re silly for installing hard plastic seats with no cushioning, thinking no one would feel it.
Love the deep blue color
The no frills approach is great..
If this continue, it might become a part of local culture, with people who may use it several times a month
Trains make sense in Europe because the distance between cities isn't that high, and you'll end up spending more time to reach the airport than actually flying ✈.
They should include the seat selection on the app though
Nice video! Will consider this option if I have the chance to travel from London to Edinburgh.
In finnish lumo means "spell" or "under a spell". But in positive way.
Like "rakkaus lumoaa" = "love is a spell".
Why doesn't the train use the Darlington avoiding lines? Doesn't make sense to me
Very nice train video💛
Thanks for the train ride.I enjoyed the scenery. NEW SUBSCRIBER HERE
I appreciate the good info. A train with only one class of service is not for me.
Excellent video , i like it
have a nice day 👍
greetings from Indonesia !!
OuiGo, Izy, Avlo, now Lumo. Train travel must be accessible to toiling masses.
It’s cheap enough anyways
@@travelbuzz1 I was on those seats for 9 hours with an hour break yesterday, I reckon that;'s a pretty thorough test!

Does any train operator now understand the concept of first class? If you would travel on an aeroplane in first class for 5 hours and be offered either crisps or a sandwich what would you think of them? I’m travelling to Penzance next week from Paddington, on the 1204. You might think that train but would have some form of catering? It doesn’t.
The only train that does is the 1304 to Plymouth. For a country that invented the railways (but not of course the pullman) it’s a bit of a disgrace. Lumo it’s obviously not intending to try things any differently.
Been there, done that, a disgrace, as you say.
I am slow catching up with this. The train seemed pretty empty and the background sound seemed to indicate a bit of a jolly. Was this an excursion for media types?
So beautiful
Big fan of your videos. Watching every videos for past 4 years from #SriLanka 🇱🇰 😍❤️
Beautiful scenery of the northern coastline. Looks fantastic value
Beautiful station 😍😍😍
You skipped over passing Newark-on-Trent, a fine town, last redoubt of the Royalists in the Civil War, and full of interesting architecture.
And some massive barbel in river Trent especially on Bobs island in the middle of Newark.
Thanks for the scenic trip!
I was expecting this video to be more about the train and not about fleeting landscapes.
Did you ever try a nationalised railway in the UK? I doubt it you weren't born !!
Excellent. Beautiful looking train ! New subs.👍👍
This looks outrageously classy!
So weird to see kgx with only iets and electrostars, but im due to go up scotty next month, ive got my outgoing booked with my first time due to be on an lner, but if i could get on this coming back, that would really make my trip!

Great video !!
Thank you for this informative video 📹 👍 👏
@@seat61 So we do not allow competition on our network? If not, what the hell was the point of privatizing the damn thing in the first place?
@@johnwood1948 In the British model, competition happens when the franchise is let (government gets best value price), not at the public-facing stage. Open-access competition is allowed, but under conditions - it must add something extra, like linking London and Hull, or Morpeth, or aimed at airlines, rather than taking existing revenue from a government-let contract.
Good Lord, no! Have you *seen* the type of human that crawls around Doncaster? The rest of the country would like to *not* have all of their valuables nicked, THANK YOU.🤮👎🏻🖕
Pretty interesting video. Would have liked to have seen more of the on-board facilities. Thank you!

He was sat behind me - and yes, he'll be making a video on the first public Lumo train on Monday, so check out his channel after that!
@@roadie3124 Indeed so. But so much for the low fares - mostly benefit those who already live in the wealthiest part of the country.
@@BJHolloway1 Yes, you're probably right. But they might capture even more with a few more stops. Hopefully that will follow - but it seems rather commercially cynical (if sensible - is there a difference?) - just cherry pick the most profitable services. Whatever happened to a national public service - let alone levelling up?
@@roadie3124 The whole idea of an "express" train is that, with no stops, it travels at high speed. I make the average speed a little under 80 mph. It's 2021, not 1951.
One detail I noticed is how the seat backs have areas engraved at the sides for more leg space

Thanks for the video. Looks great although I'm a little leary of the sizable gap between the train and platform in Edinburgh.
I like how the England/Scotland border has a sign to let you know you're entering Scotland, unlike here in the USA, when Amtrak crosses different states. Only on the highway do we have such signs. Great video. New subscriber!
We have signs telling us we’re leaving villages! Even asking us to come back!
Have you considered that England and Scotland are actually different countries and not just states of one country?
Beautiful video
Curious, why a stop at Morpeth? Would have thought a stop at York would be more lucrative.
@@seat61 thanks for the reply :)
It serves quite a large catchment area.
I’d have to check, but I think Morpeth is one of Northumberland’s largest towns, where everyone *isn’t* going to try and mug you (looking at you, Ashington!),
