  • I go over the basics of keeping, breeding and being successful with one of the most common and popular Rainbows in the hobby: the Turquoise Rainbow. Melanotaenia Lacustris has been around since the 80s and it features the deepest blues of any rainbow out there, so let's dive in on this wonderful fish!

    I have nine of these guys from Dan's Fish. I ordered six and .... love those extras. They are all grown up since arriving this summer. One of my favorites. They spawn incessantly. The Hawaiian Blue Moscow Guppies are doing great! Eating like little pigs. This tutorial was very beneficial. Learned some things and had some things clarified. Thanks for all Bentley.

    I don’t have turquoise rd but they’re for sure on my wish list! Thanks for the info. I think you answered what happened to my rainbow fish eggs as they were hatching. I have chloramines and I think it was the dechlorinator. As I added the water they just kinda melted before my eyes. I checked the temp and it was a degree off so that’s what I thought but now the dechlorinator makes more sense. Either way I have two fry now and your videos have been invaluable for me! Thank you!

    I saw a GLO fish..lol. I broke down and bought 2 for my Rainbow and tetra's 240G. The grand kids I thought..but they kind of grow on you. I kind of wish I had bought the one that was yellow body and a blue neon nose. Could pass for a natural fish with great color. Instead..I went for what I thought she would like..the pink. 2 is enough..ha.

    Bentley just spent some time looking over your Rainbow videos, and good to see you promoting them. I keep a 120G high tech planted with Rainbows, and do what I can to promote them as well. IMO, they are a perfect fit for a planted tank. Posted a video recently with some new species in my tank, and some large Lacustris. You might like it.

      Very familiar with your tank - you have some big old boys that look great swimming around! Always happy to talk about Rainbows, they're my love when it comes to fish.

    • @Greggz111
      @Greggz111 5 лет назад

      Thanks, some of those big guys are pretty old. Just lost my oldest at over 11 years. I think the biggest thing to overcome is patience. Baby Bows often don't look like much. Some take years to show full adult colors. And breeding means so much. Some washed out ones barely resemble those from a good blood line. I keep a journal over at the Plantedtank.net with lots of pictures of mature Bows (www.plantedtank.net/forums/12-tank-journals/1020497-greggz-120g-rainbow-fish-tank-new-video-12-15-18-a.html). We've been getting more and more new Bow tanks sprouting up on the board, which is good thing to see.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  5 лет назад

      @@Greggz111 I'm one of those new-age techies who has phased forums basically out of my life, but I do recall your thread after seeing one of the videos of your tank. I'm pretty familiar with the waiting game that is letting Bows color up - I have 8 different species all raising up currently waiting to color out from Gary Lange's visit, its a patience game, but worth it if you ask me. Cheers!

      Well Bentley I envy you. Getting a nice variety from G. Lange is pretty special. I look forward to seeing updates and how they do for you. I should probably know this but do you intend on selling them some time?

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  5 лет назад

      @@Greggz111 Once I can breed out more of them I will likely sell some or sell eggs. The spares past my breeding groups of the current ones raising are all promised out to local club members first. Eventually most certainly! I actually have been conditioning some of my breeding adults of good lines to prep for spawning mops as I get some more raising tanks online.

      The Salmon they probably refer to since it is called a Humpback here on the coast, is a Pink Salmon. Very pronounced hump when it returns to spawn, not that it matters that much, just information. Again Bentley good stuff. I grew up north of you a bit on Vancouver Island.

    Bentley, great job. Really like the pace and depth of knowledge on the subject.
    I also love blue fish. Liked your opinions on "best fish choice" for blue fish lovers. Saves me time on investigating the possible choices. Question - does price matter $$$..?
    Are Gary Lange's Turquoise a better blue than a box stores for example.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  5 лет назад

      Yes and No. I think the best way to explain it is that the more "premium" lines of Turquoise, which are likely closer to wild caught in generation are just going to be more robust fish and likely be more active in switching those colors around. The more generic turquoise bred in a pond out in Florida (most common) will still end up beautiful fish, but you see a lot more subtle color "wow" factor in those premium Turquoise. In my opinion, start with a group of generic cheaper ones, if they float your fancy - perfect! If you find yourself wanting that little bit more - then look into the better genetic lines. Where you see the difference is more in fish like a Boesemani, Wanamensis or Bleheri - the pond bred ones really get washed out in color in comparison whereas the Turquoise stay relatively uniform.

    Hi , is iT true what i think is that a male can show AN almost yellow analvin and female have that only blue?? I think my female can show a little gold nose sometimes. They are cool but my Alfa male( turquoise) is dominating the tank in his morning routine: sparring with a male boesemani ( small as in 2 years old) love my rainbows.

    • @BentleyPascoe
      @BentleyPascoe  5 лет назад

      When the males are displaying you will see a yellow-green (and sometimes maybe almost golden yellow) color in the anal fin. You'll typically see the same color just below the blue in the body before you get the the white portion of the lower body as well when the boys are on full display.

    I have a new 120 gallon that I am considering making a rainbow tank. Thanks for the info on this species. What would you think about putting them in with an Oscar? The Oscar I would be getting is a juvenile. I'm wondering if the Oscar could grow up with the Rainbows and be okay or if it would be a bad idea. Turquoise tend to do best in cooler temps than what rams like. Most rainbows do well in the 74-78 range, but turquoise tend to do best more around 70-74. So they might not be the best fit.
