Joe... a couple of plowing tips for you. Firstly, back your Polaris into the garage so your first plowing is right out of the garage. Secondly, angle your plow (right or left) sharply, and make your first run down the middle of the driveway. Turn around at the street or house and make consecutive runs pushing the snow further out from that center pass.
Hey Allen after you angle your blade and run down the middle of the driveway and you turn around at the street do you still have your plow angled when you go back down the middle or do you keep it straight? I'm about to start plowing for this older gent and was wanting some advice please.
@@swully-ol4lx so long as you are pushing the snow outwards, keep it angled to push the snow to the outer edges. A straight blade is inefficient except in small areas.
@@swully-ol4lx By making these ever increasing circles you shouldn't have to stop to change the blade angle. If plowing on a gravel driveway, your blade should be equipped with adjustable sliders that allow your blade to ride just above the gravel. Otherwise, you'll be plowing up your driveway gravel and moving it with the snow off the driveway.
a couple hundred pounds of weight in the back will help too, not over loaded but some added weight, also do not put the blade all the way to the pavemet, that way there is the weight transfer of the blade on the front wheels for added traction and steering
You can sand, buff, and wax the windshield too be crystal clear. Also, after each plowing, I saturate my machine and plow in a silicone spray. Make sure to lower tire air pressure way down for max traction. Nice unit!
Weight in the rear is a must and you should be plowing in low range. Also, backing it inside is more efficient so you can just drop the blade once it’s outside the door and not drive over snow THEN try to plow it.
Otherwise, your front tires are doing most of the work. Same thing applies to a pickup truck. Four wheels working makes for a much more efficient machine.
I hope that one treats you well. these things get more use, utility wise, than anything else when you have a big chunk of land, or farm. Aside from the tractor, the side by side gets used every single day on the farm. So in the long run I think you’ll be happy you got it. You might even end up upgrading. Side by sides are just so damn useful.
Used a Honda 500 for plowing. Was a great machine and had no problems. Easy to maneuver and plenty of pushing power. Backing into garage was advantageous for first swipe of snow. Had a common drive I plowed and enjoyed it.
yes the rear is supposed to be a mechanical diff lock the front is an armature which rotates and a series of rollers become magnetized and engage both side axels. i have a set of pdf maunals for it if you want them.
You're a good man dude I really enjoy your videos. No stupid music and beating around the bush for 15 minutes before you get to the point. Just straight forward good mechanical knowledge. Keep up the great work bud.
Sweet deal (in today's money). I am plowing with a 2022 Polaris 570 with a 72" plow. Been lovng it as I have 200 feet of driveway. I will say that the 2022 is much better balanced with the engine and trans under the box instead of under the seat. When plow is on it balances very well. Still snowing and blowing here in the north so waiting it out and then let the fun begin. LOL Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Brake fluid in the reservoir generally looks good... I bleed the brakes or put completely new fluid in it as the stuff down in the brake cylinders is what gets dirty.
You could really clean your bikes up nice with a bit of acid wash. All the aluminum would look brand new and make your machines look amazing. Look for a acid based rim cleaned. Works wonders
Those little 500 are inherently noisy. But are tough as nails. I have the 900 XP HO ranger. I’ve hauled dirt pulled logs and everything else. Has 5000 miles on it and will run 65 mph. That bad land winch is good. I think you did good Joe. So people aren’t mechanically inclined as was the previous owner. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Take the center plate off the inside center of the tailgate. I did that and unscrew and take out the latches on each side. I can't remember if there was an adjustment on each rod or I gave each rod a little tweak that would actually shorten them and that will get the latches to move enough to easily open the tailgate.
I'm thinking that if you remove inside cover on the tail gate you can adjust the latches, also start in the center of the driveway and turn around at the end and push the snow that way you don't need to reverse all the back
If that tailgate handle is anything like Chevy p/u's? Inside that center latch are metal rods that extend out to the latches on either side, so that when ya pull up on the handle it pulls those latches in. those metal rods are connected to the pull handle through plastic bushings. Chances are those bushings are worn so that when pulling the handle it doesn't pull those rods in far enough to unlatch...OR? It could be an easier "fix" if the pivoting mechanism on the handle itself is corroded where its range of motion (so to speak) is not pulling those rods in far enough. But? until then? jez leave the tailgate down. 😉
its in great condition i paid about 600 for both of mine from gov planet, one had a hand ful of peagravel in the motor and 1800 hours i shop vacd the gravel out and it run like a champ, Subaru designed the 500cc engines they are bullet proof
Yeah I used to operate the John Deere Gator and what we did for weight is get you some firewood or a concrete blocks and put in the back of the bed and then also put chains on there for your extra traction that's what we had and it worked great
You can get windshield wiper kits for that Polaris UTV you just got Joe. You might half to order the kit online for it though like a lot of your other parts you get in to your place to for your four wheelers.& Etc. That you work on in your shop.
WD40 also makes a silicone lubricant spray that will not evaporate the way the water displacement spray does. Some jell lubricant spray is also a good thing to have around. It's gell lube remains where you spray it and won't drip off (unless you use way too much lol).
Hell ya that awesome and good luck in this nasty freezing storm we all are getting. Get some tire chain and maybe lil extra rear weight thing will go everywhere
I wanted to comment before i even finish watching. You got by far the better end of the del. I bought the exact same machin3 polaris ranger 500 brand new. Mine was a 2003 model. I paid around 10,000 for it the plow is at least 1,500. Your little 4 wheeler will never be able to do what that ranger will do. You should love it.
We had one of those machine on the job,had alot of fun and work with it,and yes overall doing the maintenance and adjustments on it was relatively easy, but if you are to do snow with it,you definitively have to put weigh in your box,and also ,I've noticed that the wet snow was packing on your blade, you can always spray it with some silicon lubricant. Have fun with it,I did.
I like my 2016 570 Ranger and even my old 2002 Ranger did better with rear snow chains, they make a big difference when backing up and helped when pushing snow into the pile. I liked my 02 a bit better when towing due to having the tongue weight on the straight axle, the newer ones with rear independent suspension seem to squat a bit more with a trailer hooked up. Have fun and look into rear chains you won't regret it.
This Polaris will be an asset to you along with your skid steer. The bed doesn't hold too much, but it moves faster than your skid steer. You're amassing equipment that will aid in the building of your track.
Lesson learned, always pull fill plugs before drain plugs. Nothing worse than not being able to refill something you just drained. Also, how you were holding you motor oil bottle and it was pouring out in gulps, turn the the bottle over 180 degrees so the pour spot is at the top will allow a smoother pour with little to no gulping. It's much cleaner and easier to control
Actually it's only 1 wheel drive. With only 1 CV axle on the front, the power is being sent to the side with no axle because it has the least resistance. And with no diff lock in the rear it's just 1 wheel drive.
I figured it was 2 wheel 1 in the rear if it's in the unlocked position and the front on the polaris has a electric locker so 1 wheel up front that was my thought either way its moving more snow than I thought it would like that
I started out buying a 500...saying thats all I'll need. then the 700... & 900... and yep the 1000 .. You will go on a trail ride with your friends and you won't be able to keep up .. sold the 500 and upgraded 3 more times. You mention windshield and wipers ... good ones "glass" with wipers and bottom split for vent run around $1200. to $1500.00 ... acrylic and plexiglass are much cheaper but they scratch the second you install and remove the blue plastic protection film. Thats how it went for me ... more or better accessories with more power ... have fun
When I saw what you were buying here I said, finally a machine I know! My old 6x6 was essentially the same machine. They're workhorses and pretty powerful for their displacement and machine size. Lots of used parts available on fleabay too. Starters and carbs are temperamental but easy repairs for you. Seems like a pretty decent score.
Joe if your looking for just a plow check out Snowsport Plows. Plow with your truck with comfort of heat.I have had mine for over eight years . No hydraulics and takes up small space.
I know your channel is focused on quads. But its hard to beat a truck for plowing. At least here in the rockies you can find quite a few plows for sale that come with a truck.
I have a Ranger 500 like that. It’s a good utility machine, never had a problem with it, but one warning - that parking brake is a really bad design. It’s too close to the gas pedal so your foot can slip off and fall on the gas pedal and you zoom forward, or backward, often into a garage door (you can guess how I know that). So it’s a good idea to always put the Ranger in neutral before you apply the parking brake.
I have a 2005 ranger and my battery is under the hood but it's alot smaller battery had no problems with the small battery. I've plowed for many years works great. You could put some weight in the back. Might help you till you get your parts. Have fun they make plowing snow enjoyable.
I use a 500 to plow snow up here in Alaska. Chains on the back wheels. Synthethic rope instead of wire cable on the winch. No problem plowing 3 miles of my driveway .
it amazes me that people dont do the basic maintenance of thier stuff. its good for us people who are not afraid to get our hands dirty. of fixed loads of mowers and snowblowers and sell them for beer money or i keep them myself
Regarding the windshield freezing - It's sticking to the windshield because it was inside the garage at what ever the temp the garage was. Now that it's out in the elements the snow is melting dropping its temp and refreezing. I'll bet if you scrape it off it will not continue to accumulate. Same thing happens in our vehicles. If you keep the heat off during a storm you'll have little need for wipers. Once the defroster or heater is on you'll see it sticking to and then melting on the windshield. My 2 cents.
One thing that really improves your clean pavement is to replace your scid bar with a 1 x8 solid steel from like a actual county plow. I had one welded to the bottom of my plow. One thing I liked was it added weight so it cleaned the pavement better. I owned a funeral home so my parking lot that was actually 200 square feet short of an acre of blacktop. I plowed the parking lot for 7 years with a Kawasaki Prairie 300 4x4 . I live in Wisconsin so we receive enough snow. One of those years we received 108 inches. I never had one problem with the machine. I will be buying another Kawasaki, that’s for sure.
It most likely has had an oil change…you can find a Polaris filter many places. Also, I would consider using a 5w oil during the colder months…I use Rotella T6 (5w-50) year round in our Defender. It’s great oil at good price.
I have a 2004 polaris ranger 500 4x4 just like yours. If you add some weight in the bed you will be surprised how great it will plow even in 2 wheel drive.
Hwy 21/73, I know exactly where You were. LOL I've been Plowing with an ATV since 2003. I have a Polaris 700 Sportsman with the Big Moose Plow on it. Several Mods I have done. I have Hydraulics for the Plow Angle, Dedicated lift Winch for lifting the Plow The Hydraulic Pump is also used for the Dump Trailer. Limit Switch to stop the Winch on the lift Stroke. I put a 1/2 pipe on the plow blade edge to keep it from digging into the Gravel. I have Chains on all 4 Corners. (I needed Spacers on the Front). All 4 springs have been upgraded. I have a lot of Weight in the big Polaris Branded Back Box and the big Deep cycle battery on the Front Rack Suspension Lock for the Back end One most important tip for Plowing... clean off the Plow blade really good than when it is dry coat it with Silicone Spray and LET IT DRY. When You take off down the Driveway the Snow will just fly off the blade. I have over 800 Hours on My machine, mostly Plowing Snow than Trail Riding and the only Trouble I have. I like to Foul the Plugs.. I use it more than My 45 Hp Kioti Tractor cause it is more nimble. Mike M Wausau/Merrill area.
Get the tail gate open be a lot handier I have a newer model 500 moved 90 yds of material this year added a larger battery , wiper washer and a rad hose heater on an early morning timer starts better The warm up much faster sand in pails in back with a chain and shovels scraper etc The pails with the sand gets a little better traction Maybe angle shifter next year
@2vintage My guess on issues: Tailgate - I think the rods from the handle out to the latches are bent slightly.? Front CV axel - was cut out because it probably blown out of the back of the wheel.? Diff Lock - I'm guessing that broke or has missing pieces.? Or the replaced the rear axel with one that doesn't have a diff lock. She's definitely had a hard life of abuse and no maintenance. Good luck.
Just a little advice. Your blade has allot of snow stuck to it. It came from a warm shop. After a bit, clean the snow off. The blade is cold now and the snow will roll off it, especially when the blade is angled.
You could siphon the differential lubricant out. I've used my MightyVac to do this before. . Have to check online to find out which size wrench is needed. That's a handy cart to have even if you didn't have all that land. Would love to have one here. Going to look for one after NewYears.
You need to get to costco a buy some disposable gloves. Keep chemicals off your skin as much as you can. Testicular / prostate / skin cancer can be prevented. Consider all the chemicals encountered in servicing a unit.
I personally would never buy a Polaris. Got my 08 Kawasaki brute force with a 60" plow 650 miles 100 hours on it. Never any issues yet. It's still a baby lol.
Don’t judge a book by its cover. We used a bunch of these when I was in the Army. They were real poplar over in Iraq going from place to place. I maintained a fleet of these in our battalion. They are tough little machines if taken care of. The badlands winch is a god winch. About the only electrical thing I’d buy from harbor freight.
You should clean up the machines before you sell them. Find something that can polish up the rims and the plastics. Might be able to get a little more out of them
On your backup light, I’m not positive, but I THINK there is a capped off wire running down the driver’s side frame under the tilt bed that can be used with a relay to switch your backup lights on automatically when you put it in reverse.
Find some take off bighorn 2.0's on craigslist for tires. Your stock tires dont pull in the snow. The bighorns pull great for plowing. Also get 2 or 3 of those sand filled tubes at tractor supply for extra weight, one in passenger footwell and 2 behind seat in box. You won't believe the difference.
If you remove the rear center gate latch you may see it is connected by cable to the outsides. May just need to shorten the cables at the latch 1/2 inch so the dump bed would work. Just a thought.
Thes machines are known for having Intake bootst that can break and leak. So if its seems to be running lean or overheating I would check that out first. I've replace many of them on my Polaris Rangers and ATVs as well.
Just get a old set of car chains and cut them down to fit the back tires, it will work a lot better till you fix front axle . If you get a lot of snow you can leave Them on till spring !
Wondering if the original battery was smaller to make it easier to check oil. Might be able to add an actuator so you can tilt the blade from the drivers seat.
I'd try fixing that handle issue it has. That way it opens for you when dumping out your snow.,or whatever you need it for in the winter time.& Summer time months.& Vacation's to.
You'll half to add in A switch into the main wiring harness.& They got heater's out for them.& Other UTV'S Andrew camarata put One of those kits on his vehicle similar to yours.
In the Seattle area I can't find anything even close to that price. $5500 is the closest and KFX values are around $2500 on up depending on year and condition. Good buy I would say.
And for your tailgate release there's probably some sort of bent linkage that is not allowing it to pull on the rods going out to the left and right catch. Probably from somebody pulling on the handle in the middle of the tailgate as hard as they could trying to get it to release when it was all gummed up.
Add some weight in the back & rear tire chains & you will be amazed at what you can push. I used a 1985 Honda Fourtrax 250 for 18 years in Wisconsin. Even though it was 2WD, extra weight in the back & rear tire chains got the job done. You have a nice rig for plowing as is. Enjoy!

I have a 2004 polaris ranger 500 4x4 just like yours. If you add some weight in the bed you will be surprised how great it will plow even in 2 wheel drive.
Hwy 21/73, I know exactly where You were. LOL
I've been Plowing with an ATV since 2003.
I have a Polaris 700 Sportsman with the Big Moose Plow on it.
Several Mods I have done. I have Hydraulics for the Plow Angle, Dedicated lift Winch for lifting the Plow
The Hydraulic Pump is also used for the Dump Trailer. Limit Switch to stop the Winch on the lift Stroke.
I put a 1/2 pipe on the plow blade edge to keep it from digging into the Gravel.
I have Chains on all 4 Corners. (I needed Spacers on the Front). All 4 springs have been upgraded.
I have a lot of Weight in the big Polaris Branded Back Box and the big Deep cycle battery on the Front Rack
Suspension Lock for the Back end
One most important tip for Plowing... clean off the Plow blade really good than when it is dry coat it with Silicone Spray and LET IT DRY.
Get the tail gate open be a lot handier I have a newer model 500 moved 90 yds of material this year added a larger battery , wiper washer and a rad hose heater on an early morning timer starts better
The warm up much faster sand in pails in back with a chain and shovels scraper etc
The pails with the sand gets a little better traction
Maybe angle shifter next year
@2vintage
My guess on issues:
Tailgate - I think the rods from the handle out to the latches are bent slightly.?
Front CV axel - was cut out because it probably blown out of the back of the wheel.?
Diff Lock - I'm guessing that broke or has missing pieces.? Or the replaced the rear axel with one that doesn't have a diff lock.
She's definitely had a hard life of abuse and no maintenance. Good luck.
Merry Christmas joe! Them rangers are pricey machines 😮 I think that was a pretty good deal.
Just a little advice. Your blade has allot of snow stuck to it. It came from a warm shop. After a bit, clean the snow off. The blade is cold now and the snow will roll off it, especially when the blade is angled.
We’re in a ground blizzard now no new snow but 65mph winds blowing around the 4 feet of snow we already had on the ground.
Consider all the chemicals encountered in servicing a unit.
eh, what doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger aye
I personally would never buy a Polaris. Got my 08 Kawasaki brute force with a 60" plow 650 miles 100 hours on it. Never any issues yet. It's still a baby lol.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos I particularly like your last banche video I had the same year Mine went 110 with a bit of 1-10 60-40 mix 32 to 1
Always make sure the fill plug will loosen before draining. I learned the hard way.
You should be able to pull the good cv axle out of the other side. Then it will allow you to punch the broken stub out from the backside.
Nice machine, great video as always. Merry Christmas and Happy New year.
Just woke up and first thing i did is watch youuu
Don’t judge a book by its cover. We used a bunch of these when I was in the Army. They were real poplar over in Iraq going from place to place. I maintained a fleet of these in our battalion. They are tough little machines if taken care of. The badlands winch is a god winch. About the only electrical thing I’d buy from harbor freight.
You should clean up the machines before you sell them. Find something that can polish up the rims and the plastics. Might be able to get a little more out of them
Maxima SC1
I don't think he's trying to capitalize on sales. The channel I think is mainly how he gets paid for this
On your backup light, I’m not positive, but I THINK there is a capped off wire running down the driver’s side frame under the tilt bed that can be used with a relay to switch your backup lights on automatically when you put it in reverse.
Always what your videos love them keep it up i always keep notifications on
Awesome ride by the way Joe. Merry Christmas to y'all in Wisconsin to.
🎶that name again is Mr. Plow👍👍👍
If you remove the rear center gate latch you may see it is connected by cable to the outsides. May just need to shorten the cables at the latch 1/2 inch so the dump bed would work. Just a thought.
We got -50c here instead of the snow. The cold is coming your way. I’m in Alberta
I used couple 12" pieces of pex pipe red 3/4" and just screwed them on bolts that are at corners of plow. Great visual of edges.. and cheap
Jeez you and your lady have a nice place going congrats big dog💪
Thes machines are known for having Intake bootst that can break and leak. So if its seems to be running lean or overheating I would check that out first. I've replace many of them on my Polaris Rangers and ATVs as well.
Love watching your videos man. Keep up the good work
I like that you bought an old beat up 4:wheeler and didn’t even look at engine or drive train
You can fill the front diff through the vent tube on top of differential. It's so much easier then taking out fill plug.
Nice video and fun ! I hope you'll share the CV Axle replacement, really curious to know how you'll end up pulling this one out !
Happy holidays !
They left the axle stub in so the front dif would hold fluid at the seal. 4 wheel with chains will help!
Here before 1 thousand lol. Whats up joe have a good day merry Christmas 🎄🎁 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Joe "Sorry if it's hard to see" Me "Sorry it's a pain to film" Glad you didn't give up on the front differential bolt. 🏁
The joys of buying something used.
Excellent job on the video, especially your commentary. Good job overall. Thanks.
Cool vids. I find your work pants and boots combo very funny.
Getting ready for winter, enjoyed your vid!
I for see you opening a used toy dealership. Buy them fix them and sell them. Although you do pay top dollar I have noticed that. Great video Joel!!
Driveway that's not frozen sucks. But the tractor now that's sweettttt!!!
Great years videos Merry Christmas to your family and a Happy New Year 🎉
Add some weight in the back & rear tire chains & you will be amazed at what you can push. I used a 1985 Honda Fourtrax 250 for 18 years in Wisconsin. Even though it was 2WD, extra weight in the back & rear tire chains got the job done. You have a nice rig for plowing as is. Enjoy!
Man your house is beautiful. Like the cabin look in that living room
It's hard on the belt plowing in high range
Low range is for anything under 10 MPH and loads like plowing
