Just a note that when English speakers say "beef", it's a linguistic heritage. It's from the french "le 'bœuf". Meanwhile, we say "chicken" for dinner or to refer to the animal or "fish" for the dinner or to refer to the animal. In fact, when it comes to fish, people will say "I'm having the halibut" so they're very specific. Pork is another one of those split words. It's pig for the animal and pork to refer to the flesh.
Basically, the aristocrats/Normans/French invaders spoke the language of the ruling class and the peasants spoke their version of "Ye merry olde England". These words are some clues to our past in that region
It may help individuals divorce where the meat in their diet comes from in some cases but honestly, I think most people don't really think about it.
Oh... and please do try legumes again. If you can, make idli and sambhar. It's remarkably easy once you get the premade stuff at the Indian ethnic grocer. This time, I invested in an "idli" mold thingy so I didn't even have to buy the premade stuff. They have mixes for all thus and it's stupid easy. All you need is a pressure cooker (I bought a little one from the Indian store and it's great. I use it to do beans as well because I don't want to wait over night for black bean soup.)

The one thing I feel like you missed is that as chickens are bred to overproduce, taking their eggs may be unethical in that we know they could be healthier if they have those eggs cooked and fed back to them to compensate for the nutrient depletion from the overproduction of eggs. Also there's medicine (or a procedure? Sorry I forget) they give chickens to entirely delete their period and that's another way to try and compensate for the genetic mutilation. But you're right of course the chooks often don't give a shit about their eggs, for sure. This is all stuff I picked up from some Earthling Ed video so yeah

here is a vegan who stopped being radical, can there be a radical veganism and a non-radical one? I don't know, but I went back to eating things that made me happy. I don't have the possibility to get everything that I could before, monetarily speaking, and there are products that are not sold everywhere and you have to go very far to get them. I have gone back to eating mayonnaise, and bread that has margarine. Those are basics of my life that I can't always replace, and there was a time when I stopped eating them completely. I realized that I was torturing myself with food and that I needed at least one decent ingredient, like mayonnaise, for salads, sandwiches, etc. It really is nothing, my whole diet respects the vegan limits, but it makes me feel very guilty to choose a product just to be happy, but I feel that I am not in the place of choosing and that I do my best. I'm wrong? I don't know. I write this to relieve myself, with someone who possibly understands me and who doesn't accuse me of being false like I do myself.

An egg at $5/dozen costs 42 cents and provides just under 80 calories so 0.5cents per calorie. The equivalent amount of flax is about 15g to provide the same caloric intake and at $5/lb costs about 16 cents so that's about 0.2cents per calorie.
And quite often I see eggs for more than $5/dozen and flax is usually much cheaper than $5/lb so the disparity would be even more.
Or if you like an egg scramble you could do that with tofu which comes out to pretty close to the same cost. Maybe a few cents difference.

I wish more people knew about algae oil supplements. If you're struggling to get enough omega-3s (like Miley was), algae oil has a nutritional profile comparable to fish oil (in fact, the whole reason fish are good sources of omega-3s is because of the algae they eat). There are plenty of other plant-based sources as well, but often they're high in ALA and low in DHA and EPA. Algae oil is a rich source of DHA and EPA, however, and so can make up for the imbalance.

My family had backyard hens when I was growing up, they were rescued because a farm nearby went bust and it was mass slaughter or finding homes. They only had hens, so we never had to worry about fertilised eggs and we never sold (or even thought of selling!) the eggs or the birds. They were all named and they were essentially (really dumb) pets who also each laid one egg every 24-48 hours. We used to take a carton of eggs to people's houses as a dinner party gift instead of wine etc.

    • @secretspy44
      @secretspy44 Год назад +4

Color depends on what they're eating. It's entirely possible to darken yolks of factory farmed chickens by supplementing their diet with high carotenoid feed, especially if that trait increases perceived quality and desirability. Likewise eggs of reasonably happy pet free range rescue chickens may have lighter seasonal variation based on provided feed and season dependent forage. Older chickens also have more pale yolks.
Tldr: Yolk color is not reliable indicator of chicken quality of life.

    • @Shadeadder

My in-laws have numerous hens that are free range in the most literal sense (can go literally anywhere on their 60 acres for forage and get supplemental feed + kitchen scraps), but their eggs still aren't "dark orange", just a healthy yellow. So I don't think yolk color is necessarily an indicator in either direction. Although I agree very pale yolks are not a good sign.

If being Vegan is always identified by the definition, "to the best of one's ability" and they are doing the best they themselves can then in my mind they must still be vegan if they claim to be one... and no one can, or should take that label away from them...

I have "left" veganism (by eating animal-derived food) a few times before. I was studying abroad in the US when I first became a vegan (2016). It took me some time to transition. To be honest I wasn't even eating a conventional western diet before that either. I only ate milk products, chicken and eggs as all other meats and animal foods disgusted me. So I thought it would be easy for me. but it really wasn't. I did a semester in Korea in 2017. After 15 days I had to move to a vegetarian diet. It was so hard to keep trying to read labels, translating using apps and asking people for help just to eat something, anything. I was starving and had low energy all the time. So I started eating things with cheese, milk and eggs (they were very hard to avoid). I memorized a few meat related words to at least avoid those. I once went to a ramen place for dinner with my friends. One of them helped me place the order. She tried to explain to the staff that I can't have meat. When I eventually got my order. It was honestly really good but I could obviously tell that the broth was bone-based. The point is, no matter how hard I tried, the language AND cultural barrier always would make me "mess-up". Because of all the guilt, it was harder for me to call myself vegan again for a long time even after I returned to USA and then later to India. I now call myself vegan. I eat plant-based and avoid animal products as much as possible but I know sometimes, I might unintentionally, or in unavoidable circumstances eat or wear or use something with an animal product in it.

@@tomlauris Tom, please take a deep breath for me will you?
I looked up 'are vegetarians more prone to depression' and opened the three top search results. Two articles from Psychology Today and a meta-study which the articles referenced (as I understood it). I couldn't access the study either so this is why I'll have to go with them. Here are some excerpts from the articles:
From ' The Baffling Link Between Vegetarianism and Depression'
      Does Vegetarianism Cause Depression?
What is going on? I can think of a couple of possibilities. First, it could be the case that vegetarian diets actually produce biological changes in brain chemistry, or even the microbiome, that cause some people to be depressed. I am a bit skeptical of this explanation, but the German study mentioned above found that 34 percent of people with depression started on a vegetarian diet before the onset of their mental disorders, compared to 9 percent of people with anxiety disorders.
I think it is more likely that some traits may predispose some people to both depression and to vegetarianism. Women, for example, are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression, and there are also more female vegetarians than male vegetarians. And, while the evidence is mixed, some personality types may also be particularly drawn to vegetarianism. In addition, vegetarian diets can be isolating. A woman who recently became a vegan told me that she suddenly gets fewer dinner invitations from old friends: They don’t know how to cook for her. And one young woman told me, “I won’t go out with anyone who is not a vegetarian. It limits my pool of possible men.” Further, social reasons rank high when former vegetarians and vegans are asked why they returned to meat. (See Why Do Most Vegetarians Go Back To Eating Meat?)
Finally, as several animal activists pointed out to me after this post was initially written, the vegetarian-depression link could be the result of moral commitment. As Lori Marino, executive director of the Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy wrote on Facebook, vegetarians and vegans are more aware of the cruelties of the world and this is more depressing than living in a state of ignorant bliss. Lori is right. Indeed, the emotional and psychological costs of devoting your life to animal protection was a major theme in one of my first studies of human-animal relationships.
In short, we don’t know why the rates of depression seem substantially higher among vegetarians than in omnivores. But we do know that “correlation does not imply causality” and “more research is needed.”
And from 'Why Are Vegetarians More Likely to Be Depressed?'
[...] the results of a previous longitudinal study on vegetarian diet and depression, anxiety, and somatoform disorders suggest that depressive mood may come first (Michalak et al., 2012). In this study, it was shown that many people started to follow a vegetarian diet only after they got a diagnosis for a mental disorder, not the other way around.
Thus, a vegetarian diet may not lead to depression at all. Instead, it may be more likely that people become vegetarian after developing mental health issues. Michalak and co-authors (2012) suggested three possible reasons for this behavior:
      1. Individuals with mental health issues may change their diet to positively influence their mental health via a healthier lifestyle.
      2. Individuals with mental health issues like depression may be more sensitive to the suffering of other beings, including animals. This increased empathy for animal suffering may cause them to stop eating meat.
      3. Individuals with mental health issues may be more anxious about their health in general; a vegetarian diet is often perceived as being healthier than eating meat.
      End of excerpts.
This also falls in line with what Unnatural Vegan has said on this question. To point towards some correlation and use it as an excuse to ignore all of the very clear suffering which the animals are experiencing and ignoring any other reason to go vegan/vegetarian is just silly. That is why I called out residentjess on using this correlation as a coping mechanism for not going vegan/vegetarian.

My Grandma used to have Chickens, and most of them were rescues. many farmers try to sell old an chicken when it doesn't make "profit" anymore. They typically sell them for the price they'd make out of selling the meat (just a few Euros). Normally, they still produce eggs, just not as many.
When my Grandma added one of those eggs into a cake for example, I still ate it. And when I really craved an egg, I also ate one. She gave them put for free to friends & family. When she had to give them up, (she could barely walk and my grandpa's Parkinson's & Dementia got too bad to keep them) she was so sad. I know that this is a rare example, but she truly loved them.
One thing that really annoys me is this "all or nothing" approach plant based news has. People adding eggs into their diet aren't the same as someone who eats meat 3 Times a day. I think this approach does more harm then good.
My parents eating more vegetarian foods for instance is already a huge step in my opinion!

Due to his high profile he would easily have had access to the best advice out there unlike common folk like me who would have difficulty accessing a vegan nutritionist or doctor.
If he had done this but not been given any help in resolving his issues or at least bringing them back to manageable levels - bearing in mind that eating animal products again isn’t an actual cure for his condition as he acknowledges - then he would be more believable.
However Alex clearly became a vegan out of empathy for animals (though not from an animal rights perspective, more welfarism) so backsliding on that is definitely a more difficult issue for veganism in general.

So I don't think Alex is necessarily morally justified in going back to meat on the basis of his condition, because of his access to quality health advice etc., like you mentioned. However, to be fair to him, he never claimed that animal products were a 'cure', and in fact outright stated that they weren't. His issue, if I remember correctly, was finding high-calorie nutrient-dense food that he could eat in very small amounts to provide sufficient energy when he was in situations where he could only manage very small amounts of food without triggering his condition.

I believe 7 Day Adventist diet is ovo lacto vegetarian (and not strictly so) Those in Okinawa eat seafood and some red meat, though quite plant based. The term plant based, just means highest proportion of calories are from plant based sources. Doesn't mean vegetarian, much less vegan.
