    I'm like her; it doesn't matter if I have high protein or higher fat - VOLUME is what satiates me. When people say of a food, "Oh, it's really high in calories but you can't eat much of it because it's so rich." Nope. Not me. I can eat a bag of nuts and still not be full if there's not some fruit or greens adding volume.

      100% same. I need volume. I eat about 9 pounds of food a day. That’s impossible to do and have high protein intake and remain within my caloric range. Proteins. Fats. Nothing. Volume. Yes!

    I am not vegan but I freakin love your videos. Have been watching your videos for 2-3 years now. I am not vegan or vegetarian, but you have inspired me to eat less meat/fish/milk. I have 4 days a week that are vegan/vegetarian meals (milk in my coffee though). I have stopped buying red meat, chicken, eggs. It feels really good.

      @@CatherineKristine18 that makes me so happy! ❤️ I feel really healthy and have more energy. But what I love most about vegan food is that there is so much new food I can try. I remember the first time I cooked tofu and was thinking ”wtf is this shit”, but now I loooove tofu 😂

    In defence of Chels, she is talking about protein in the context of her style of eating plan. She's not saying that no vegan ever has to think about protein. She's saying that when you follow *her* diet plan, you will meet your protein needs. She has tracked her diet before, and her usual protein consumption is 80-90g per day, which is fine for someone of her build, I think. She also says that her personal preference is to eat a large volume of food. Personally, I prefer a higher protein diet, similar to UV, and I love mock meats, beans, tofu, soy milk etc, so I eat those foods a lot. I do think it's important for vegans to make sure they're getting enough protein, but I also think that you can't judge Chels' diet from this video alone. In other videos she shows that she eats beans, lentils, tofu, flaxseeds and avocado frequently.

      I try to eat around 55 grams a day. Too much protein has been a problem in the past- I tried to eat 100 grams and I just felt bad, had pain everywhere, a bunch of little kidney stones (more like kidney silt) and mild gout symptoms. Maybe plant protein is different.
      Mind you, I'm middle aged, so maybe that's an issue . Maybe the kidneys aren't doing so well.

      Nobody in good health really needs more than 90g of protein per day. 90g is more than adequate even for an active person. There have been vegan bodybuilders that only consume about 75g of protein per day, and do just fine.

      80-90g is heaps, way more than enough for a woman that thin. I'm also thin and small and 70g of protein is what I would consider a lot for me. Small women only need like 60g.
      For most smaller women, it's going to be really hard to eat enough food to get that much protein. I'm sure she only manages to eat that much food because she weightlifts.

    Building muscles...requires PROTEIN (animal or plant). Period. Protien helps muscles recover and rebuild the damage done during working out.

      @@hj8756 omg that is so true! After being in pain for over 15 years I started with daily protein shakes to feel full. When I suddenly stopt my pain got insanely worse almost over night!! I have been eating low protein for years because of food inrolerances and i never heard that protein has such a big impact on the body

      Yep, 190 pound male who does hardcore strength training, I try to get 200 grams MINIMUM. Some days I eat 250 plus grams. The rule of thumb in the lifting community is 1 gram per pound of body weight minimum.

      @Richard Hoffman It’s a broad range. You hit a certain level, then the law of diminishing returns kicks in. I think for most people, 1 gram per pound of body weight puts you in a place where you have enough to be getting a good affect. Less than that you risk not getting enough, and more than that may be only slight additional benefit. The exact exact amount for any individual would require a whole clinical study to figure out an exact number.

    Thanks to you I've started trying out mock meats and it really makes it so much easier to not eat meat and to feel full and satisfied while eating less meat ;) I'm not vegan, not even vegetarian, yet I can do weeks without meat. I stopped eating dairy, but I struggle with eggs.

    She is not the most erudite or articulate influencer out there, but she has done what so many of us have failed to do: lost the 30 or so lbs that kept chubby and kept it off by eating lots of very healthy food. I cannot eat very much in one sitting, so her meals look too big for me, but she is speaking on what has worked very well for her. I am not sure why you are confused. If she had a salad plate that was 1/3 veg 1/3 rice and 1/3 hummus, that would be more calorie-dense than if her plate was 1/2 veg, 1/4 rice, and 1/4 hummus. (and it would still have plenty of protein) She now maintains her weightloss effortlessly while eating to her heart's content.

      Yes, it’s called volume eating. Greg Doucette’s cookbook has high volume foods but also lots of protein, although a lot of it is like a chemical experiment.

      @@stargazerbird I tried Greg's way and did pretty well with it - got down to the lowest weight I've been in over a decade *and* was building muscle. Volume eating doesn't always work for me - I will burn through a pile of veggies in half an hour & get sick of eating so much - but the lower calorie swaps and higher protein substitutions he suggested were fantastic.

      Is it something new? I guess I never used to watch much on RUclips in the way of vegan nutrition. I've heard Raw used to be huge when RUclips first started. I do think there are some issues with the Starch Solution, even though it works for some people. I think the long-term may not be great for women in particular

    Volume eater in the house! I need low cal and high volume. Protein does nothing for me. Fat either. I’ve tried it all. To be within my caloric range, I have to do low fat and low protein or I’m hungry.
    I’m building muscle just fine. Hair is thick and shiny. No issues eating this way for many years.

    Eating her way (High vegetables, low fat, etc) I got MAJOR stomach issue because of all the fiber. It didn’t happen at first, but after a couple years it really messed up my gut. I eat more balanced now and over time (with probiotics and digestive enzymes and not stuffing myself) I healed.

      I think this is a great point. Sometimes eating large volumes of food (and fiber) isn't meant for everyone. Large volumes of food can even keep some people in the binging mentality. Just a thought. Thank you for sharing your experience.

    Girl. You have to do a video on Caroline Deisler. She is a vegan ig/youtuber that never eats protein and promotes a starvation diet based on vegetables and fruit. No oil. No gluten. She doesn’t eat tempeh, tofu, beans, legumes, protein powders, or seitan. No sugar. She lost her period for 5 years and still promotes her cookbooks that feature recipes which contain just fiber, carbs, and natural sugar. Would love to know what you think of her! Her videos are massively voted down and she has a lot of young women that follow her. Reckless!

      I love tofu too. Sometimes I eat it straight from the package with a little soy sauce or liquid aminos.
      Lately I've been giving it a little saute & sprinkling some black salt on it, as well as some garlic & onion powder, dried parsley & Italian blend herbs, & nutritional yeast. *SO* good.

    High protein high carb has always worked best for me. Especially high carb! It's so funny how everyone's body is so unique. But this is also why I don't like giving any weight loss advice beyond "calories in, calories out".

    I have never in my life added protein to my diet and been more hungry and less satisfied… Whenever I add in protein, I’m more satisfied and end up eating much less! I agree Swayze, this is one unique opinion!

    She comes from a background of binge-eating and starving herself to try to lose weight, and talks about how she lost weight from eating low calorie density but high volume foods and stopped binge eating and having unhealthy views about food. Her audience is a lot of people on a similar path who want higher volume foods while losing weight and who struggle with weight loss/gain and eating. I think that's an important consideration.

      OK but can we talk about how eating high-volume foods (read: overfilling your stomach) isn't recovering from binge eating (read: overfilling your stomach)? You're literally continuing the same behavior, but in a way that allows you to not gain fat. All of the emotional issues that led you to overfill your stomach in the first place are still there, and the "unhealthy view of food" is still there, because you view food as something to fill an emotional void for you. It leads to wacky views like "protein doesn't matter" that are clearly just a justification to keep using food to solve emotional problems.

    Just bought Bob’s TVP, on sale for $2, that has 12 grams of protein per 1/4 cup, with only 80 calories. Like, damn. I’ve never cooked with tvp before, but with those numbers…

      I bought some a while ago to keep as a pantry staple and finally used it when I was low on groceries. I made a simple pasta & veggie bake with it & added a shit ton of garlic and spices - it was delicious and quite filling!

    My biggest struggle all throughout my (almost) 6 years as a vegan has been eating enough volume to get an adequate calorie intake regardless of the macronutrient composition. I look at meals like what she's eating and I literally cannot imagine being able to eat that much volume. Sometimes I think HCLF has such an overemphasis on volume eating that it becomes difficult for HCLF people to go back to a more normal diet since they are used to eating so much. Personally, I think high-volume eating is inconvenient even if you are able to do it. Takes more time, higher risk of bloating...

      I've had same problem. Thank god I remembered how much I love a baked potato with salt and pepper, corn on the cob and steamed rice. But like you, I struggle to get it all down. I do a few tablespoons of peanut butter a day. Not for the protein, but for the calories. Good luck on your journey!

    damn thank you for this video i think ive realised where ive been going wrong.
    i struggle with binging when i get “too hungry” but lately i feel like ive been binging every meal.
    i ate a fake chicken salad the other day for lunch that had a tonne of protein and i was pretty much satiated for that whole day.
    im definitely going to focus more on this in the future and definitely think it should be mentioned when talking about disordered eating because a lot of the time your body loses control because its missing something.

    I’ve increased my bench press from 135 to 170 (and other gains) in 1-2 set per workout, 35 workouts/11-12 weeks only eating slightly less than the RDA (and I’m in my 40s). It’s really not that big of a deal for most people.

    I've been lifting weights for the past couple of months, and I notice that I feel stronger/make good progress when I focus on getting more protein. So I get about 100 g per day, sometimes more. It's not difficult, but figuring out how to balance out carbs & fat is a challenge (albeit a fun & interesting one).

      1g per pound of lean tissue is the the minimum effective, but it’s easier just to try and shoot for 1g for 1lb of overall body weight

I've experimented with that upper range, and now I'm experimenting with 100g (and sometimes a little more), and I honestly don't feel a difference. I'm going to continue playing around with it though, to see how I feel. It's really fascinating.

    I also think the gist of her video was to encourage people to understand that by eating a WFPB diet, we are generally getting plenty of protein. There are a lot of people who think vegans lack protein, in general, which is not true. I think she was trying to show that’s not the case.

I actually watch greg doucette for advice on muscle building, but hearing such quality information form a female vegan food youtuber (I watch all of your videos) was a pleasent supprise...especially the stuff about progressive overload.     honestly, i think these criticisms are a little bit of a reach. I follow chelsea's channel and she is very reasonable and follows the starch solution and shares what has worked for her. She is all about being practical and eating whole foods.

      She’s not sharing what worked for her, she’s telling vegans not to worry about protein which can be super dangerous especially since she isn’t qualified to tell ppl what to eat. She is a thin white girl and acts like she is the end all be all of fitness. Personal experience is worthless when it comes to diet advice bc it has no science behind to. Unnatural vegan isn’t even being that critical and isn’t insulting her diet she’s commenting on how this girl is acting like what works for her will work for everyone. She not suggesting she’s literally telling ppl what to do and completely oversimplifying things. You can’t say “if you say high protein you’ll eat more calories” when it depends so much on the specific foods you eat.

      @@abigailelizabeth4655 Chelsea hasn't always been thin. In fact at one time she was more than a little overweight. She got thin by eating whole foods.
      I have the same issue with vegan processed foods, even though I'm quite a bit older and male. I tend to gain weight eating even "healthy" processed foods or nuts, but I lose weight on whole foods diet.

    I’m guessing your video was suggested to me because I subscribe to Chelsea’s channel. I love her. She’s down to earth and she’s not saying she’s a dietitian or anything just what works for her. She follows the starch solution so everything she says follows that. All and all of society would just eat more vegetables and less meat and dairy we’d have a much healthier society. Like grandma always said, “Eat your vegetables!”🤗

    This video is pretty good, but glosses over some very important public health facts. 1. Most Americans greatly underestimate the amount of food they take in during a day, vegan or not. 2. Most Americans greatly overestimate how many calories their resting metabolism burns, how active they are, how many calories they have burned in exercise, how much tension they have placed their muscles under during a workout, or how much additional protein they need their body needs to recover. 3. Every major medical institution from NIH, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and Harvard Medical School still say the average American needs only 0.8-1.2g of protein per kg of body mass. And most Americans, vegan or not, are going well beyond these recommendations. 4. We have a massive obesity epidemic in this country, mainly because of the three things listed above.

      If you are overweight or obese then sure, trying to keep your calorie count low is obviously a healthy thing to do. But if you don’t struggle with your weight - which the majority of the world does not - and especially if you are physically active, the definition of a ‘healthy diet’ is not one which is low calorie and has low nutrient density. I think a lot of medical professionals are so desperate to tackle the skyrocketing obesity rates that they decide the best ‘universal’ health advise they can promote is to eat lots of vegetables and lower your calorie count. Americans in particular have been raised to believe they have to eat animal protein in excess to be strong, which has resulted in horrific overeating and sickness, so the best thing medical professionals can do to help them is emphasise the lower end of the protein DRI to try and counter the myth. Clinicians rightfully say that it doesn’t matter if the minimum amount of protein isn’t technically enough to build muscle optimally, because most people don’t go to the gym and cardiovascular disease or fatty liver will kill a morbidly obese person long before some minor deficiency will. ‘Healthy’ to a sedentary and/or fat person is sometimes very different to ‘healthy’ for an active and/or thin person.
      Don’t get me wrong, promoting lower calorie, lighter diets will save millions of lives out of the ~30-70% of any given population that are overweight, but it is unfortunately not relevant to people outside that proportion, and is in fact very dangerous for some. A lot of women in particular are obsessed with being skinny and already don’t eat as much protein as men on average, so hearing the generic advice that they should lower the caloric density of their food and only need 47g of protein parroted everywhere is not good. Yes, many people overestimate their resting metabolism, but likewise many people assume every bite of food they eat is going to make them fat. Parents who think all there is to health is low calorie/weight loss/fruit and veg/drinking lots of water won’t understand that this logic does not apply to children, and that healthy development requires plenty of fat and protein and carbohydrates. And of course, once you’ve lost weight your goal should be to return your caloric intake back to normal, so your low calorie diet has to end at some point. So I understand what you mean but I personally think this trend of conflating low calorie with health in the name of utilitarianism is misguided.

      Garth Davis's book Proteinaholic talks about this. The focus on protein is keeping people away from eating real whole foods. Protein shakes, on the other hand? Not alot of really good evidence that they prevent any disease condition or pathology.

    Chelsea has based her diet on a starch based diet, similar to the starch solution by Dr John McDonald, similar to plant based Kiki and High Carb Hannah. A lot of people, myself including, find starch based food more satiating. If I cut out carbs, I replace with protein and fat, which have far more calories than a potato. I also, as a person in a fat body, struggle to include any fat at all to my diet without gaining weight, even on a whole food plant based diet. Any fat I include in my diet (and chelsea does, also starch solution dieters) are from whole food sources, such as avocado, olives and a small amount of seeds, but only when maintaining weight, not losing weight. I actually fulfil my macro protein needs eating a whole food plant based diet without faffing with adding processed fake meats and protein powders....

      Yup. Her diet is perfectly adequate, and does include a variety of foods (last time I checked red lentils have plenty of protein). UV's opinions are just spouting whatever some dietician thinks, and their opinions are equally uninformed.
      The average person isn't going to gain extra muscle just from eating extra protein, it doesn't work that way. Unless you are doing intense exercises 5-6 days a week or recovering from injury, your protein requirements are going to be easily met just by eating more food.

      You're on the right track. Chelsea is awesome for sharing. I'm prone to diabetes and life is just far fkg easier LF. I eat ground ground flax on anything I can smuggle it onto... a couple cashews in some cheese sauce or homemade chocolate milk... but the faux meats are so clearly high in fats and inflammatory oils! Ugh

      @@abigailelizabeth4655 Chelsea Mae's style of eating works for many people. When I ate more like Unnatural Vegan (ie, a diet with quite a bit of processed foods, fats, etc.), I gained 15 lbs. When I eat more Whole Food Plant Based, I tend to lose weight and keep it off.

    This is the problem!!!! It seems like the majority of vegan/whole food plant based people don't get enough protein. It seems like all the emphasis is on volume and high carb foods and not on protein rich foods for all around balanced nutrition. And I think seeds (and other health fats) are crucial for good health (and hormone balance)...but I'll get off my soapbox now. Thanks for such a great video

      Although my experiences are only anecdotal, I really don’t think that it’s the majority of vegan/whole food plant based people. Personally, I’ve never met another vegan who is as ignorant as these youtubers are about their protein intake. As a vegan myself, I am asked ad nauseam about how I get my protein, to which I respond with a few screenshots of my food intake for a day logged into My Fitness Pal, as well as by listing of a few of my favourite high-protein foods like seitan (HAIL SEITAN), tofu, soy milk, and natto. I only know a few other vegans, but we all have similar tactics for responding to the infamous protein question. Something else we share, however, is an anxiety around the stereotype of the “protein-deficient vegan”, which is an anxiety that I’m often still consumed by.
      I think the reason it feels like there are so many naive, malnourished vegans (and it definitely does) is because many of the moderately-sized vegan internet personalities have found success in promoting ideas that people want to hear. People love to hear that you can live off of chocolate-banana nice cream, guacamole, popcorn, dates, oats, tahini, *insert stereotypical low-protein vegan food*, and coconut yoghurt. I should note that I totally agree with everything you said about the excessive emphasis on high carb foods and the neglect of protein-rich foods and healthy-fats in regards to internet content💕

      some of us don't have access to good sources of vegan protein, in my case I live in a small town, no tofu no edamame and low qualitity brands of soy milk. I have to eat a looot of legumes, nuts and seeds to get just a decent amount of protein, sometimes can be really hard to get enough protein in this diet but nobody wants to admit it not even me

      @@interwebff I don’t want to give unsolicited advice, but have you ever made seitan? It’s made from “vital wheat gluten”, which is a flour-like substance that you can buy in bulk online for very low prices. Seitan is extremely high in protein, so you don’t need to eat very much of it, and it freezes well. There are tons of recipes online, but all you really need is vital wheat gluten, sauces, and seasoning. I really don’t want to sound like I’m trying to give out unwarranted advice; back when I lived in a food desert myself, it was extremely hard for me as well and I felt like shit for a really long time.

      Even when I ate meat, I wouldn't hit the goal that My Fitness Pal wanted me to hit for protein. I don't think the issue is so much the vegan diets as it is how we act like every human is a body builder requiring large amounts of protein at every meal. People talk about gaining muscle like we're all lifting weights 5x a week but I'm just happy to go on a walk every now and then.

    But why worry? If youre doing progressive overload and youre making gains and you feel satiated on the food you eat, theres no reason to care about your macros. The only reason you should care is if one of those is not true. Studies are cool but theres no benefit basing what works best for you on studies over what... well... works best for you, which is something you can only know from trial and error.

    I used to eat HCLF, having those huge meals and not feeling satiated. I was bloated and gassy all the time lol
    I did this bc it's what all the vegan RUclipsrs doing. I even joined Hannah and Kiki's course where they say to eat a 1/2 a plate of veggies at every meal - I fell off that wagon real quick - broccoli grosses me out now bc of that 1/2 plate recommendation LOL
    I believe Chelsea was initially going to be part of Hannah and Kiki's course but then she ended up not doing it.
    Anyways, I started doing macros, with the help of a vegan coach, and it has been AMAZING for me.
    I eat a greater variety of vegan foods now and I look and feel better!
    I am satiated for a lot longer, my sugar cravings decreased immensely, I am leaner, and my gas is now that of a normal person lol
    It's crazy because I have watched you for years and you always talk about the importance of protein but it did not click for me until I noticed I wasn't seeing the gym progress I wanted to see. I have been doing macros for 3 months and saw more progress in the gym during these 3 months than the first 6 months of my fitness journey!
    Anyways, I agree with everything you said in this video.
    I always looked at Hannah and Kiki and just believed that what worked for them would work for me, but it obviously did not.

    I cannot eat just three meals a day, because it doesn’t fit in my stomach 🥴 I’m constantly snacking though. I rarely eat meals, and in turn just snack. I couldn’t imagine trying to consume one of her meals. This issue sounds very specific to her 😬

    Walnuts are 30% protein by mass compared with 52% for beef. They do have more fat than protein, but the protein isn’t insignificant. It is worth remembering that many vegans often use a handful of nuts as a snack in place of something that would otherwise be high in sugar and be a high fat content anyway, or use them to make a garnish or dressing to make something more interesting to eat, rather than the prime protein source of the day. It’s similar with whole grains, they may well be chosen as a carb source, but the extra 10g of protein from your half cup serving of pearl barley isn’t insignificant. It all adds up. Other sources can easily add up and effectively double the main legume based protein sources in your diet.

    Chels is fabulous. She is very science based and her podcast has lots of sound advice. Another thing I like is she is very small so her calorie burn is going to be lower than for instance Miles of Healthy Crazy Cool, who seems to be able to eat nearing 4000 calories a day. In this case she is way more relevant to me.

    Also the RDA for protein is not based off only lean body mass, its total body weight? For people who are active or athletes the recs are 1-2 grams/kg depending on what activity you're doing. 0.8 is a bare minimum for non elderly adults who are not active, not a sweet spot for everyone. Also I get 125g of protein a day with plants 😬

      I've heard Lean & total body mass used to calculate requirements but this explanation seems to make sense?
      "Lean Body Mass Example: a 200-lb person with 10% body fat has 180 lbs of LBM. A 250-lb person with 30% body fat has 175 lbs of LBM.
      But why use lean body mass instead of total body weight?
      It’s simple. If the two individuals in the above example use their total body weight to calculate optimal protein intake, the obese 250-lb person will consume significantly more protein despite having less lean body mass.
      It’s more sensible to base your protein needs off lean body mass instead of total body weight since excess fat tissue (i.e., white adipose tissue) is not metabolically demanding. People who are obese/overweight will overestimate their actual protein needs if they use total body weight as the starting parameter."
      ETA: that's a lot of protein. I thought I was doing well at 70-100! Are you very active? What's your caloric intake if you don't mind sharing please?

      @@hannahmitchell87 i have seen estimated caloric needs be adjusted for body composition (like the Cunningham equation) but haven't seen protein calcs change off of body comp- but it does make sense to consider it. If you adjust the calories for weight and check what percentage of calories come from protein it kind of does that I guess haha! Sometimes in rotations (RD to be) we use an ideal body weight for protein calcs, usually only if the person is morbidly obese and fall pretty far outside the populations those equations or recommendations were developed with.
      And I don't mind sharing my calorie intake! I usually eat around 2,000-2,200. I am pretty active, I like to lift weights ~4 days a week and am getting back into running and want to do another half marathon. I'm also 5'7" and ~170 pounds, so slightly overweight by BMI categories but my body has been pretty resistant to change so I am just embracing what seems to be a set point and enjoying getting stronger 😊

    I usually love your videos but with you judging the volume she eats, I found it highly triggering. Don’t ever judge the volume someone eats, especially if it’s low calorie foods they’re filling up on. Coming from someone who battled anorexia for many years, I’m really disappointed with this video.

    My favorite soy milk is the Silk Ultra milk (chocolate and original) with 20 grams of protein PER SERVING. Huuuuge protein boost and much needed since I have a very physical job and active lifestyle. Just annoys me that it sells out pretty frequently and only like 2 Targets around me sell it.

    People forget that fiber absorbs a lot of the minerals and vitamins. You don’t need an excess of fiber. If you want to higher your iron intake you need to think of lowering your fiber intake with your iron rich meals. And protein is in fact a critical factor in a vegan diet unlike what I read in the comments here. People are setting themselves up for failure and it makes me tired. Most people can’t eat like this forever and then they blame veganism for it.

      Whole food vegans typically eat more than enough minerals to compensate for any of this. You can also soak grains and legumes to improve their digestibility. High fiber diets are very important for weight maintanence and preventing chronic disease.

    Yeah the problem with these high protein meals is that they're huge. I can't eat that volume of food, and I don't want that volume of food. Looks expensive. 😅

    I'm thankful for your content. It's quite easy to get swept up into the low protein plant-based community here on RUclips. I wasn't realizing how little protein I was consuming until I started counting macros. Now I will start prioritizing protein at meal and snack time.

    I’ve seen Chelsea before. She does the starch solution so I stopped watching. She seems nice tho and means we’ll just no. I’m not eating a pound of broccoli and 2 sweet potato’s for dinner. No thanks. She like the new high carb Hannah. Hannah seems better actually and eats more balanced so it’s kinda weird to see this type of mindset still going on.

    These people have never heard of protein powder apparently... Protein powder is an excellent source of protein and minerals without going over your calories and carbohydrates.
    For example, one shake a day can contribute like 30+ grams of protein. Helps alot if you want to reduce calories and food volume, but still get that protein and feel satiated.

      I buy a tub or two a year for emergency meals. But the salts, heavy metals present and artificial sweeteners in most of them are scary. Be sure to check those ingredients.

    Sometimes the RDA is not enough, like if you are weight training or a high level athlete, but otherwise probably nothing bad will happen if you get half the RDA, or half as much is a particular essentially amino acid as recommended. It’s not some kind of laughable thing to say that. Nobody goes to the hospital (or get a disease) for protein deficiency; they go to the hospital and get diseases for anorexia and bulimia or vitamin or mineral deficiency. Those are the primary reasons to eat more than just fruit and rice/corn or just processed sugar and/or oil. Protein deficiency is never the binding concern. It only come along with other more urgent/serious/general deficiencies.

    Dang this girl swayze is reviewing really pisses me off. Yes, you have to exercise to build muscle but protein is essential for helping to repair and build muscles. Without it, it’s very hard to build that muscle after a workout. Source is that I’m a dietitian lol
    Also, I’m 4’10, 100lbs and I eat around 80-90gm protein. Def not overkill thanks for pointing this out!

      A pregnant girl on that channel asked how to keep doing HCLF while pregnant! I posted the link to a vegan website with pregnancy information from a licensed dietician. It's crazy to me that women will actually risk the lives of their newborn by seeking nutritional advice from a stranger on the internet, a stranger who doesn't look that healthy herself right now.

      @@mdoublehb9040 There are 3 vegetables that have a complete proteins and if you completely stretch your stomach out and eat all day long then you may meet your minimum protein requirements to stay alive but you're going to be deficient in minerals and vitamins and healthy fats. In addition the antinutrients in those raw fruits and vegetables are going to eventually destroy your digestive system. There's no study showing that kind of diet is healthy long-term and why would you torture your body when it's not any healthier than a cooked vegan diet? People are just stupid. The objective is to be healthy and live long, not to be different and mess up your body.

    I think you should actually watch someone’s channel and follow their content before you criticize them. Chelsea eats a low fat whole food plant based diet that uses calorie density in order to achieve ideal body weight. It’s a vegetable-heavy starch solution diet. She talks about weight loss because she’s a weight loss coach using calorie density, behavior-based change, and building healthy habits to help other vegan women adopt healthy and low calorie dense eating patterns. The meals she’s eating aren’t to lose weight for HER - those are the meals she eats to maintain her weight, as she’s in a behavioral equilibrium with the calories she eats and the ones her current body burns. But when she was losing weight, those meals naturally created a caloric deficit for her, which is why she lost weight eating these meals. And she helps overweight people create similar meals so that they are in a caloric deficit and lose weight as well. She promotes creating a small caloric deficit without counting calories, which is the most sustainable for weight loss. If you knew ANYTHING about her, you would know she’s the OPPOSITE of freelee - she used to try and fail at raw veganism all of the time and used to heavily restrict and overexercise, and she finally achieved a healthy relationship with food when she stopped trying to follow Freelee and stopped seeing everything in a complete black and white mindset. She even includes overt fats and some processed foods, but the majority of what she eats is low fat whole food plant based. She’s not too thin or tiny - she has plenty of healthy body fat. Our views of what healthy body fat is completely distorted in today’s society, Jesus Christ. And, why does it matter if she eats high volume and maintains this weight? For many people, if they eat low volume but high fat meals, they become fat, just like Unnatural Vegan. Perhaps if Unnatural Vegan tried eating a low fat starch based diet, she would lose weight. I find it incomprehensible how Unnatural Vegan tells people to eat low volume meals, when it’s clearly not working for her.

    There's an insane number of people that don't understand how their body metabolizes most things. What hits the hardest for me though is the gym bros that don't understand nutrition but think they do. Your body really doesn't absorb "protein" your stomach acids and enzymes break them down into their amino acid constituents, "digestion". What makes the "essential amino acids" 'essential'is that they are the ones your own cells can't synthesize from simpler materials, it is 'essential'to eat them. Different foods have different ratios of the amino acids, only some foods are a "complete protein", offering the full complement of amino acids in the structures of their proteins. It doesn't matter how much "protein" you eat, if you're not balancing amino acids properly

      @@GaryHighFruit I agree 0.8-0.9g/kg is adequate for somebody engaging in light exercise or hitting the gym a few times a week, even doing some resistance training. I like to get a little over the RDA, but I don't think you have to eat nearly as much protein as the bro science suggests.

    I’m bodybuilder and I tried to eat less protein. It didn’t work for me (and i tried very hard). Sweet spot for me is 2.5 gr of protein for kilo of lean body mass plus 10% for bioavailability. I hit my fats too if not I get problems with my period.

    I'm lost on how she cant get enough protein and still say in a calorie deficit. I normally eat 2,000 to 2,300 Kcals at maintenance , but two weeks ago I started to cut down to lose a few lbs and now I'm eating 1,750kcals . Today I ate 110g of protein. Granted I did have a protein shake after my strength training this morning which was 20g. But even at that I still got 90g through food.

      @@finsta4979 Sure of course😊 after my weight training I have a vegan vanilla protein shake with just water, for breakfast I've batch made a black bean and cauliflower hash with chopped tomatoes, peppers, herbs spices etc. For lunch I've been having a chickpea and quinoa salad, sometimes I put it in a rice wrap cause it's quicker to eat lol. For dinner lately it's some type of bean and lentils curry. I'll use a high volume low kcal veg and make swaps like lighter coconut milk to keep me at me target calories. For snacks it's a high protein (usually 20grams) low fat/sugar vegan yoghurt or a bar paired with fruit. Hope that helps ❤ xx

    I consider something high protein to be 70% or more. I agree - I noticed the issue with the high protein vegan videos too. Not all of them are problematic, but a lot are.

I'll eat 3 types of high protein pastas with nutritional yeast, protein powder, and beyond meat in one meal - and I feel it's not enough sometimes.

    Yeah, I find it to be an individual preference or choice whether you go focus more on high volume/lower calorie plates or lower volume/higher calorie plates. Either way, foods like beans fit in and are healthy and work for either way of eating. Of course you only do lots of nuts and seeds if you prefer the higher fat/lower volume way of eating. I personally alternate between both ways. Lately I’ve been more in the high nuts and seeds, higher protein, lower volume camp. But sometimes I change it up. I could never eat the volume that she does, because I’m not as active and I’m older than she is. My body prefers, I am finding, eating less and eating simpler and doing plenty of intermittent fasting.

    I’m vegan and I eat a lot of fat. When I was high carb low fat I was really skinny but I was obsessed with food, suffered from hormonal issues and didn’t really enjoy my food at all. After that I went a bit crazy and free poured oil over everything and ate LOADS of fat and I did put in weight. Now I still eat a lot of fat (30-40% of calories) but I’ve been maintaining my weight and now starting to exercise and focus on protein I am starting to recomp/lose weight. Most important I love my food, enjoy healthy meals and feel overall much healthier

    As I have gotten older I have had to try to prioritize meeting nutritional targets for older women rather than focusing on weight loss/being skinny. It is very hard for women in particular to meet actual nutritional needs for things like iron, b vitamins, protein and the like while eating in a calorie deficit. As long as biomarkers like blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, etc are in healthy ranges, I feel like it may not be healthier to be thinner if that means not giving my body the nutrition it actually needs to function well....I don't have any problem meeting these needs on a varied vegan diet...I cant imagine how many raw vegetables I would have to eat to get enough though...would be difficult

    Lipids and fats are very important! A large part of your cell membranes, brain matter , skin is made up of lipids and fats!
    Having all the essential amino acids in enough amounts is so important. Protein is just a broad term , amino acids is more specific and when it comes to vegan food it is hard to find a food with all essential amino acids. So youll have to pair them together to get enough
    EXample, rice is high in cysteine and methionine but low in lysine while beans is low on cyseine and methionine but high in lysine. They both contain the other amino acids so paired together they are a complete source of protein

    I followed Chelsea along with HCH and Plantiful Kiki for about six months. I tried their 50/50 high carb low fat diet and stuck to it religiously. Lots of food but to be honest my satiety was complaining unsatisfied. I was constantly hungry. Along with that my IBS flared up terribly. It was pure hell. I had to quit because I was scared to leave the house for fear of an IBS incident. Too much fibre. Not enough protein. Chelsea is a lovely girl but her diet ideas don’t work for all of us. I need my protein and in following a higher protein diet I have lost weight and controlled my IBS.

    sorry but if i am looking to lose weight as a vegan i will follow the vegan who looks like their way actually worked. I do follow chelsea, hannah, kiki, emmie, because its obvious they have had great results. Yes everyone does it a little differently but so do I. I add tofu and beans and nuts. No need for oil-thats just nonsense. but chelsea is one of the most balanced vegans I know. SHe does add protein like tofu to her meals. I follow her bc i get ideas for meals. Go Chels!

    I was trying to find a high protein brownie recipe to make brownie protein bars and dead Ass like almost all the recipes were titled “high protein brownies” and they all had like 4-6 grams of protein in them… like in what world is 4-6 grams of protein in a 300 calorie brownie considered high protein lmao. Also I used to hate red lentil pasta and then I bought the Trader Joe’s brand and it is SO good and it’s 15 grams of protein for the same calories as normal pasta so about 170 calorie serving. Plus it tastes super good, only takes 8 minutes to cook, and actually gets soft unlike a lot of lentil pasta. Omg u are so right about the tahini dressing it is like a teaspoon of watery tahini and I get that dressing is just tahini and lemon juice like a lot of “vegan tahini dressing” recipes. What’s the point of putting it into a little bowl when you are gonna lose half of the serving unless you seriously scrape the bowl lol. It wouldn’t kill her to add a little bit of olive oil to that pasta or the dressing ngl.
    The stuff she is saying about how when you increase your protein and decrease your carbs your calories go up is such an oversimplification it’s ridiculous and honestly isn’t really even true in most cases. It sounds like she’s just trying to sound smart but has no idea what she’s talking about. It would 100% depend on what specific foods you are eating and also protein is going to satisfy you a lot more than just straight carbs. This is why you should never take influencers advice at face value and you should always talk to your doctor or an RD or at least real sources and general consensus. This girl is so annoying and obviously thinks bc something doesn’t work for her that it won’t work for anyone and that she represents the entirety of the population. It’s quite egocentric. Maybe she should stick to recipes and stop giving nutrition advice when she isn’t qualified to give it.

    Something left out of this discussion is fuel sources for the human body. Our primary fuel source is carbohydrates. If we aren't getting enough carbs we go into ketosis and burn fat as fuel. That's of course an evolutionary adaptation to deal with starvation. If we are starving and have depleted our fat stores our bodies will cannibalize our muscles. So protein is last on the list of energy sources. So if we are getting enough calories from carbs and fats; the protein we consume isn't being used for fuel. While protein may have 4 calories per gram when measured in a lab; we aren't using those calories. So in a diet with sufficient carbs and fats; protein is effectively zero calories. So I don't worry about adding extra protein to a meal. It makes it more satisfying and doesn't contribute calories.
    That's my understanding. If I am incorrect on this and someone has a good source of info; please send me a link.

    I like it that she like many others myself included is trying to get a good balance in our food. I eat mostly vegan keto with a bit of feta when the local avocados are bad and my fat sources are limited to coconut organic peanut butter etc. I use pea protein powder with ground sesame flax and chia seed cocoa. Tastes delicious with nutmeg. I work out every day. Lightly. And walk a lot. You say vegan is restrictive and I do mostly vegan keto but I find it just makes things like grocery shopping very simple. Combing and cooking is really interesting. Most of the stuff in supermarkets I just ignore.

    Dry chickpeas have almost the same (actually fewer) calories than dry white rice. Obviously, they are both almost all carbs and protein and carbs and protein have approximately the same calories per gram.

    Not to mention that some vitamins are fat soluble so you NEED fat in your diet to absorb them properly

    I'm glad you made this video because ...you are wrong (I like your content but sorry). In multiple previous videos, you say that people need to be in a calorie deficit (obv) and that people eat too many calories due to portion size. But I, like MANY people you choose to ignore/demonize, need volume to feel full: I don't know why that is hard to understand. I tried eating smaller portions of processed foods and I always binged because it wasn't enough food. McDougals plan works for people like me, and it makes me not want to recommend your channel to vegan-curious people, who are volume eaters like me. I'd like to see you stop demonizing vegans who don't do it your way.

      Raw fruits and raw vegetables contain all essential amino acids and they are the best sources of protein.
      When we eat enough calories from raw fruits, then we get enough protein.
      Cooking renders at least 50% of the protein useless.
      Cooked food caused and maintains the fall of mankind.
      The raw vegan diet is the salvation of humanity.
      Animal products and cooked food are toxic and in the long run deadly.
      Humans are frugivores by nature.
      Watch Douglas Graham and Loren Lockman for more details about protein and about proper nutrition in general.

      to be fair, i think there's just a variety of people. and people who can eat high volume low calorie are just not the norm. I used to follow Mcdougals plan and had an ok time doing so and was completely sold on the whole idea of "finally" eating big portions. Eventually i shifted out of it because i wanted to enjoy fats and processed foods again which arent't really d'accord on McDougal. Now I eat much smaller portions and feel a LOT better than on high volume foods. So it can go both ways and I suspect most people would be overwhelmed by those giant portions. just a thought

    I went vegetarian for a while, I could have a huge salad but if it didn't have any protein in it I'd be starving 30 minutes later. I learned pretty quickly to include protein in every meal.

      A huge salad has hardly any CALORIES.
      Protein DOES.
      = You need the calories.
      I eat fruit for breakfast. And I'm not really hungry again until sunset.

    I checked and it seems there isn't a big difference protein-wise for regular wheat pasta and chickpea pasta - was I checking the wrong brand or is there no big difference?

    When I up my protein intake to just 70-75g I end up eating way too much and it kills my stomach. I'm happy at a low weight so I don't think that much protein is necessary for women who just want to be slim.

    Chelsea is amazing and you are taking a lot of what she says out of context. Have you heard of calorie density? That is what Chelsea is referring to, as well as Dr. Esselstyn's recommendations. I feel you are being very negative about her and I feel like I want to defend her...she is amazing and VERY knowledgable.

      I feel like since you are a huge fan of Chelsea’s you’re taking everyone Swayze is saying very personally. Swayze reviews a lot of peoples diets who eat like Chelsea and promote the same lower protein, high carb, low fat mindset. (Swayze ate raw and then very high carb for years as well) I think Swayze big issue with what Chelsea is saying is that Chelsea isn’t just saying “this works for me..” she is telling people that her way of eating is the best way of eating (for weight loss). This is wrong no matter who is saying it. You think Chelsea is knowledgeable, why? lol Swayze puts hours of research into ALL her videos… and sites all her research. Chelsea seems to be talking a lot about her own experience which is just anecdotal. The issue for RUclipsrs is that people watching your videos might not watch more than one.. so you have to be careful with how you present yourself in each video. You said Swayze is taking what Chelsea said out of context.. how? Chelsea specifically is saying you don’t have to worry about eating protein and just eat tons of carbs… and making it sound like this is the best and/or only way to lose weight. There are so many doctors who promote misinformation so just because Chelsea is talking about some doctors (who she never mentions btw so how would Swayze know that) recommendations it doesn’t mean it’s the best of recommendations. We should be looking for consensus, peer reviewed studies to take nutrition recommendations from. Chelsea has a way of eating that works for her and MANY others. But that doesn’t make its okay to promote it as the best and only way to lose weight. Eating tons and tons of lower calorie high density foods can be very uncomfortable and unsatisfying for some people. I find it funny when anyone says stuff like “ have you heard of…” or “do your research…” to Swayze lol this women’s is the queen of research lmao she has been on RUclips for over a decade debunking misinformation with science based, peer reviewed, consensus studies. And if she gets it wrong, she always apologizes and owns up to her mistakes. If Chelsea was talking about calorie density, why didn’t she use that specific term to describe what she was saying? lol anyways;, sorry for the rant, just defending Swayze.

      @M3g840 i love that you defended her! Honestly she saved me because she made me understand the importance of needing to intentionally get protein. It turned out when I tracked I was maybe getting 25 gm of protein a day. I swear she saved me! Also she is sooo smart, funny and compassionate!

      I’m not UV, but in my experience over a few years, people in my life just seeing me eat vegan and truly enjoy it, and I cook good food for them on occasion, etc. has sparked a few of my friends to either go vegan or go in that direction. I would never try to push it because I believe inspiration will encourage people so much more. On a larger scale of promoting veganism , I don’t have any experience.

    "not worth not eating fat unless that's the only way you are able to maintain a healthy weight" can we not agree that it's not a healthy weight for you if you have to eat in an unhealthy way (e.g. no fat) in order to maintain it? Like I know you like to think about numbers on scales but can we not agree that it's clearly not a healthy weight for that individual if their body will try to put on weight unless they actively starve themselves of nutrients that we know every body needs
    like if my BMI is ** (some desirable number in your head) but I am eating nothing but sawdust, clearly that is my *malnourished* weight and not my *healthy* weight
    (sawdust was a joke, don't eat sawdust)

    A higher protein diet works for me too, because i have issues with feeling full too quickly/satiety. With high protein meals i dont need to eat as much volume.

    Yeah, personally, I find it easier to eat low-cal on high-protein because it's more satiating. Personally I gained weight on super high carb, low fat low protein because I never felt truly satiated even with high volume.

    Ever since you had a bad experience with the low fat high carb diet, all you do is talk shit. Believe it or not, there’s plenty of fat in those meals. You do not need as much fat in your diet like you suggest we do. Fat is not inconsequential, especially when you consume too much of it. People, Swayze is not a registered dietitian. Take her recommendations with a grain of salt. Experiment for yourselves and if you do well with lower fat foods, don’t let this video make you second guess your food choices.

      Depends on how large the calorie deficit. Ideally you would be in a slight caloric deficit AND resistance training. The more weight you have to lose, the easier it is to lose fat while building muscle.

      You have to send your muscles the stimulus to build. Muscle is metabolically expensive tissue, so the more you have, the more energy is required (your metabolic rate increases). So if you have the right stimulus (a proper resistance training program with progressive overload, proper protein intake, not too much cardio, proper sleep) you can build muscle & lose body fat.
