Thanks for the update.... I'm a respiratory therapist, so I have no idea how an ambulance stores meds... I only see the patients when they actually come thru ER door or hospitalized patients...

Protocol is to leave the vehicle running at all times in case they get a call to respond to an emergency.
I believe that they are supposed to lock the doors if they are not near the vehicle, though.
When I was a Paramedic in Oakland, Ca, 40 years ago we’d have a unit stolen about once a year. One time the cops found it and a guy trying to smash the flashing lights because he didn’t know how to turn them off!

In the city I live in a man stole an ambulance outside of a local hospital and proceeded to run from the police.
She had it for quite a while then.

That makes no sense. There should be a three man team on an ambulance. (Ok, back in the 80’s) 2 in the back and the driver( also certified). The back 2 usually can handle the situation unless the parent is obese, or extremely unruly and needs restriction. There should be 2 sets of keys. 1 to get back into the meat wagon and the one that keeps it running to take off. But this could have changed and may vary state to state.

A local ambulance company here the medics takes the keys with them when they leave any of the ambulances even if they leave the busses running because because they'll stop if the ignition gets turned without the keys in it

It's a little difficult to go to an emergency if the keys are hanging up somewhere or in someone's pocket! HELLO! 🤪It's not a camaro, Jeep, or an F-150 truck! Its not lucrative to steal emergency vehicles! I'm a retired EMT. Ambulances are emergency vehicles. Do you really think fire trucks & cop cars don't have keys inside?!? Most people are smart & don't touch emergency vehicles. This reporter is more concerned about the keys being inside than as to why that woman would steal an ambulance in the first place! Imagine your family member having a heart attack, or your husband just cut his finger off in the woods (my hubs did that). Would you like me to run around the station, asking who has the keys to rig 1101, or would you like them to be in the ignition, ready to go?
