- Peggy accidentally discovers that Don has an affair and then reveals it to Joan.
Peggy overhears Don and Midge talking on the phone, making plans for a quick sex during a lunch break. The next day, Betty and the kids arrive arrive at the Sterling Cooper office for a scheduled family portrait. Desperate Peggy, thinking he is having sex with his mistress, has to cover for his absence and infidelity. Peggy does not know how to effectively lie to Betty about why he is not in the office. In a state of panic, Peggy runs to Joan asking her what she should do. Joan persuades Peggy to tell where she suspects Don is. She reveals the existence of the mistress to Joan, who advises her how to handle the situation - keep it simple, return to Don's office, entertain them, just say she forgot to remind Don and let him come up with his own excuse. Joan tells Peggy that it's part of her job to cover for her boss. Peggy is horrified that she has shared a possibly destructive part of Don's life with Joan and Joan seizes the opportunity to make Peggy feel bad about it.

- This is Sally and Robert. We're here for our portrait.
- Of course. I guess I knew that.
- Is he in there?
- Um, not right now, but please go inside.I'll be right back.
- Joan? Oh, my God, Joan, I need your help.
- Let go of me.
- Mrs. Draper is here, and they're having their portrait taken, and he snuck out, and I don't know who to lie to.
- Calm down. Just breathe slowly.
- Mr. Draper is out, and I don't think I'm supposed to know where he went.
- That happens.
- But they're taking their pictures today, and I would have reminded him, but he slipped out before I could. It's his fault. He comes and goes and never says anything.
- Where is he?
- I make an excuse to Mrs. Draper, she could catch him in it, especially if she just leaves. Or even worse, then he'll know that I know where he was.
- Where is he?
- I don't know.
- You do know, and you're going to tell me, or I'm not going to tell you what to do.
- I can't believe you.
- Well?
- He sees this woman. He saw her the other day. He came back all greasy and calm.
- No.
- Oh, God. Now I've told you. I'm the worst secretary in the world.
- Who is she?
- I don't care. Please hurry.
- Peggy, use your noodle. You're making this so complicated. You go out there, and you entertain her and her brats. Get some Hershey bars from the cart and tell her you don't know where he is and you forgot to remind him. It is the truth. And when he comes back, let him have an excuse. He'll have one. And then you just start apologizing for, well... just how stupid you are.
- It's probably what I would have done anyway. Oh, God, now I really shouldn't have told you.
- You shouldn't have told me. I'm not gonna tell anybody, but you shouldn't have told anybody that.
Joan Holloway Harris is a hyper feminine woman, with a pragmatic view of sex and attraction, maintaining a beautiful appearance through self care. Her ultimate dream goal in life is to find a promising and devoted man to marry. She has many affairs with powerful men who adore her, but whom she discounts as marriage material. Joan has little desire to be a trophy second wife.
Joan and Peggy do not get along at first; Joan is contemptuous of Peggy's attitude and conservative dress, while Peggy is intimidated by Joan's beauty and assertiveness. Over the course of the series, however, the two become good friends, and support each other through their personal and professional struggles, with Joan being especially supportive of Peggy's evolution as a copywriter in the male-dominated culture of advertising.
Christina Hendricks is an American actress and former model. She has been credited as having an ideal curvy body shape. Some argue that her portrayal of Joan has revolutionized perceptions of beauty on television. She has been voted as "The sexiest woman in the world" and "Best Looking Woman in America". A study by the Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons attributed a 10% rise of the number of women receiving breast augmentation surgery in part to Hendricks' influence. Hendricks commented: "I was working my butt off on Mad Men and then all anyone was talking about was my body."

Joan is one of the smartest people on the show, and it's so subtly established early on. In business situations like these, don't ever 'cover for' or 'lie', you'll just get caught. None of the men (except maybe Don later on) ever gave Joan credit for her ingenuity and wealth of knowledge.

Oh my... The diction, the whispers, especially for Joan, it feels so classy
Joan always knows how to extract the tea.
Peggy and Joan’s relationship is one of the best in the show.

What's crazy is that Christina Hendricks wasn't expected to even be a main cast member. Only a bit player.
