Hi! A few of my nepenthes are turning brown and dying from the top, others are totally fine, is there a way that these can come back? Or is there nothing I can do about the 2 pitchers?
Haha you don`t know how nice it is to hear the rain on this video, living here in Philippines I normally rush all my Carnivorous plants outside to a good soaking if it rains at all! Thanks for the info
The way you talk and what you do. You are really the Bob Ross of plants, check his videos and your voice and compare it to him, it's great. Sure you heard it before though.
Its really good that you are somewhat disturbing the roots while transplanting. You get healthier plants if you dont leave it as a huge clump while transplanting. Makes it produce more foliage and roots.
What bark are you using? I’m planning on getting a nepenthes maybe next year or after. So you are using LFSM, perilite, and bark. I like the look of the mix and it looks super airy!
Hi. I bought two Nepenthes from ASDA/Walmart here in Northern Ireland- 'Bill Bailey' and 'Suki'. They are planted in little net bags that look like tea bags. I opened one and they look like they're in seed compost which is very fine grade peat. Most of the planting mix fell away leaving not much visible roots. The plan is to pot them in sphagnum. Should I wash the peat based compost off or leave the other in the net bag?
Thank you Brad, I like the large plants that you received. The ones I get are sometimes very small. Is there any particular online store you recommend?
I believe I will want to buy from you, because you are very detailed with the plants, but I'm still not sure if I'm still not comfortable trying to grow them, the bog is great for the venus fly traps, but not good at all with the pitcher plants
My husband bought me one at our local Home Depot. It's growing extremely well and I need to re-pot it so this video was informative. Can you tell me a way to identify what type of pitcher plant it is? I live in So. Cal
Hi Brad! I'm a HUGE fan of all of your videos. You're pretty much my plant guru when I ever have any questions or concern, I usually am able to easily find an answer by looking through your videos. But I was wondering, if I don't have perlite or bark will sphagnum moss alone be sufficient? I have a Nepenthes that I purchased about 8months ago, but I think I have to repot it in new medium, cause the moss it originally came in is now starting to rot. But i just feel like it's a waste of money purchasing a variety of things for one Nepenthes. I love my plant and don't want it to die! :'( you're advice would be much appreciated! :)
I bought a pitcher plant at a flea market in FL. It hasn't produced any pitchers. It gets a long skinny piece at the end of the leaves but then they curl and dry up. What am I doing wrong?
where can I purchase soil for repotting? I just bought my nepenthes plant in July and it's already outgrowing the pot it came in but we are now in September so I'm sure it will go into dormancy soon....What would you recommend I do?
What type of Sphagnum moss are you using? I have been trying to figure out if the New Zealand type is absolutely necessary or if I can buy any other type of long fibered Sphagnum moss????
Great video! Out of curiosity, where did you get these plants. Also I'm thinking about getting a N. miranda, and I know it's intermediate, but can it adapt to live along side N bicalcarata or maybe on the shelf beneath it; so it gets a little cooler during the days and nights. I just have them by a window in a spare room, getting just above room temps because of the fluorescent lights. I just don't want to waste money on a miranda I can't grow, but would sure love to add that plant to my collection.
Awesome Name the Bical is going to want it hot, really hot. mine gets 98F highs and 75F lows this time of year. In the summer it gets 104F as a day time high and lots of humidity. This temps would kill most of my other plants haha. I got these from the urban bog on their closing out sale
Great videos! Huge fan. May I ask where you recommend buying nepenthes? I live in Bogota, Colombia. Any place that ships international and sends adult plants? I see most people here buy 5 or 6 cm plants. It seems to me a huge risk of losing the plant with the shipment and all. However, the plants in your video look huge! Thank you again for your videos!
Hi today i was repotting my nepenthes plant, cause it looked like it was dying , and in the old medium it was in, i found a live worm...what does this mean? Thank you
amazing video i must say but i do have a Major question.... my Bf bought me this plant and the nursery he got it from came with soil and not the moss. it looks like it be dying should i replant this ASAP?
NOOOOO DON"T, I live in Ohio as well and don't bring more bamboo. There's some that are taking off invasively really badly. If you want something that looks like bamboo look into japanese knotweed. But yeah don't spread bamboo around here, plus it's one of those plants that once they take hold of an area they are next to impossible to get rid of. Like my girlfriend planting lambs ear :/
cynthia burrell Thanks, not many local store sell them in Canada, so I buy them online. Search for Carnivorous plants for sale in your Country and see what comes up
Not Brad obviously but just saying that's what I use, I'm relatively new to Nepenthes, I have quite a few but in general that mix seems to work well for me about 2/3 fir bark that's about medium size and peat moss layed evenly between layers. I was having trouble when I first started them and my first few plants just were stale and didn't do much and I replanted one in pure orchid bark and the other in mixes and they all took off growing and the mixes seemed to do the best. I'm always making new mixes for plants for those seem to do quite well. Mine get a lot to eat though as well. Sometimes they burp some up if they have to big of a meal :)
Hey Brad, In the area where I live in there is no sphagnum moss for sale. I did find a a block of forest moss. Will it be as effective as sphagnum moss? Thanks, Dana
I have a massive nepenthes I bought last year. It's actually two plants in one hanging basket. It was loaded with pretty big pitches when I bought it. However, this season it never formed any pitchers. It keeps growing massive leaves but no pitches are forming. I usually have it hanging in front of a sunny window and often hang it outside for a few hours a day. I thought I knew a lot about all my carnivores until this one didn't pitcher this season. I mist the leaves multiple times a day with harvested rainwater and keep the soil medium moist at all times. So I'm guessing it's not getting the proper sunlight and humidity needed?
I'm no expert, but the big leaves and no pitchers sounds characteristic of the plant trying to get more sun, so try to give it more sunlight, but keep an eye on it, nepenthes can get burnt in the sun quite easily
I have also read a lot on pitcherless nepenthes in non-humid environments. I live in Florida and have not experienced this, but seems common in cold climates , even when misted and kept on sill.
My Nepenthes when I got it had not formed a pitcher in about 6 months it looked like (the last 6 leaves failed to make a pitcher). After I got it I started to mist the ends of the leaves, now about 5 months later I have 7 large pitchers with a new one coming every 17-25 days. I'm pretty sure they had it in a way to hot and dry climate.
Damn nice Nepenthes, Brad. I've lately succumbed to a slight case of Nepenthophilia, because I've recently repotted my lone N. x ventrata, sowed seeds of N. rafflesiana a couple of days ago, and I have N. ampullaria seeds on the way. In between the carnivores, orchids, foliage plants, Rhipsalis, and various carnivorous plant seeds sown, my eyes have grown monumentally larger than my growing space under these paltry fluorescent lights (I'm sure they miss the summer outdoors already - to hell with this Zone 6 climate... :/).
Pogue Mahone haha awesome. I have a bunch of seed sowed as well, good luck on germination, it is totally hit or miss. I'll be doing a video on the topic soon
Is there any pitcher plants that don't need really high humidity and don't need to live in a green house? I live in southern California, don't know if this weather can support any pitcher plant x_X
Hi Danny, yes of course there are! Most the you find in, say a garden centre will adapt to lower humidity. Google " nepenthes ventrata and maranda " look for those two. They are bullet proof
***** Thank you so much brad, I've always been intrigued by pitcher plants, I've had venus fly trap, but the pitcher plants are more stunning. thanks :)
Hi Brad all 3 Alatas are pitching like mad, and I got the VFT bug again, I managed to convince the local store to sell me 10 vfts for a buck each, well they looked dead to them !!! ,
I'm trying to find pots like the ones you use here, that are deeper than what I keep finding but I can't find these. Did you find them online or locally? Thanks!
Sean Upton hi Sean, all my local garden shops have a free used pot bin, I just search through them for want I need, I used mainly square pots these days and never pay for them.
***** ah gotcha thanks. I ended up going with round ones instead, although I think I'd prefer square for space reasons too. Side note, I just potted my new x Red Leopard using this video as a guide, thanks :)
Have you ever grown Neps in pure peat? I've tried that before and had excellent results. I haven't had to repot them for 2 years now :P I keep a fan on them and water them every day even in winter, they are under lights also.
My Ventrata came in pure peat. When I repotted that one, basically left the peat and put moss around it. I wouldn't try it with a huger end plant like an Eddie or hamata but everyone have there way. This just seems to work well for me.
Google is your best friend... Read read read. It depends in your setup. Indoors, greenhouse, outside. Winter nighttime temps. Florida or Colorado. You see my point.

Ok random question Is it safe to use systemic insecticide on orchids? Someone told me they use a Bayer brand and wanted to know if this is actually safe to do? Organically?
Hi Grace, yes, if use correctly they are safe. The Bayer rose Is great for scale and mealy bugs BUT it increases your chances of spider mites( not sure why... But it does)
Lowlands come from sea level in the topics, hot days and warm nights. Highlands come from the mountains in the topics, warm days and cool nights. Lowlands are harder from me to grow in the greenhouse because of the warm nights and harder on the electric bill.

I would mix in Perite, moss alone packs to tight
I have the same ones😄
I'm repoting all of mine, can I use charcoal and volcano rocks?
even your paper towels have plants on them

Do you use distilled water only.

No. No fertilizers. Period.

Oh, and I mist with MaxSea 16-16-16 a cpl times a month.
I bought it from local nursery that had a few different species. The tag didn't have the genus of it, but I'm pretty sure it is a: N. holdenii

No
Hi Brad all 3 Alatas are pitching like mad, and I got the VFT bug again, I managed to convince the local store to sell me 10 vfts for a buck each, well they looked dead to them !!! ,
David C haha awesome! I just got 12 VFT from $1 each to...they looked half dead to
Time to get the fish tank cleaned up ready for the winter zzz's...
ooooo............. be careful with the bamboo make sure you sterilize it
with hot water and maybe dawn sope
I have an orchid plant but it is weak I add water daily and the soil I am using is made of coconut and regular soil tell me what if I can do
Tariq Muhammad don’t water it every day. And repot it. It shouldn’t be in regular soil

don't use miracle grow soil there is too many minerals in it will kill your plant.

Is the same potting medium good for Venus flytraps and sundews?
Maybe just sphagnum and perlite but fir bark might decompose in boggy conditions

Yah. It should be the last since they went out of business :p
Dumb question, but what is the difference between highland species and lowland species?
Lowlands come from sea level in the topics, hot days and warm nights. Highlands come from the mountains in the topics, warm days and cool nights. Lowlands are harder from me to grow in the greenhouse because of the warm nights and harder on the electric bill.

You are so lucky you have pitcher plant but I don't
In theory, I can use just straight, long fiber sphagnum??
Yes, but I would add also Perlite if available.
Mine grow fantastic in New Zealand Sphag with a little pure perlite
Where do you get the live nepenthes?
or any exotic plants for that matter

It might be getting temps that are just to cool also look for root rot and make sure it's in the right substrate should be an airy mix Good Luck :)
thank you Brad ,you are the best, How is your little clone doing?
Lol ;)
Exactly as Garrett, has said... Wouldn't change a word. Garrett your hired! The pay is bad and the hours are long! Lol
Yay! An orchid sweat shop! ;)
Can Nepenthes live a bit water logged? it doesnt really rain alot where i live, so if they can survive sitting in water for a bit, it saves me some money on buying water. 😂
Joshy Likey moist not dripping wet.
Won't the bamboo stake root in that pot?? Lol
I'm asian and really, i cant hear exactly what are those little white things called. Can some one tell me, please
I'm a little late, but I think you're talking about perlite.
Have you ever grown venus flytraps
disappointed, i would consider watering to be an essential part of repotting, and you didnt show it.
im sure you can figure out how to water a plant
Too much mumbling!
Have you ever grown venus flytraps
+Shade Slash15 Brad has a lot of videos on temperate carnivorous plants including venus fly traps
Venus flytrap is gateway plant into carnivorous plant world. Haha
I started with flytraps and American pitchers. Later got into Nepenthes and sundews.
@@FirstLTRipvanWinkle I wish I had a better set up for them
