First game, Bengalis vs Italians: Bengali Elite Battle Elephants take 3+14*0.75=13.5 damage from Elite Genoese Crossbowmen (not sure if it gets rounded). Siege Elephants take 1 damage, since they have armor in the Cavalry and War Elephant armor classes that completely counters the bonus damage from G-bows. They don't do well against Hussars, but since they benefit from blacksmith upgrades and Paiks a Bengali Siege Elephant can very nearly beat a fully-upgraded Hussar 1v1 (a Siege Ram comes nowhere close), and the elephant gets 33% blast damage.
So while the units may look similar, mixing in Siege Elephants with your Battle Elephants helps greatly against Italians. The biggest weakness of Siege Elephants is Halberdiers, which Italians don't get: non-Bengali Siege Elephants with full armor upgrades take 7 melee, 17 bonus damage (24 total) from Pikemen, but 9 melee, 30 bonus damage (39 total) from Halberdiers.

Why not spears/pikes in the last game? They counter camels and siege elephants and then mangudai for the siege and monks.
