Love your work, Mel! Here's another tip: add/mix enough water to spackle to where it becomes runny, almost liquid, submerge the foam i the slurry, shake it off outside/somewhere safe to do so, and let it dry for a few hrs., repeat once or twice (depending on how hard you want it to be), and allow it to cure for 24-hr period. Makes great rough lava rocks. Then paint!

The one with the chip foam makes a superb underwater volcanic environment as well. Just add some coral and tall plants and it would sell itself.

Another great video Mel, and it's great to see the old enthusiasm and positivity has returned. If I may, I have a suggestion that could either be a standalone video or be included in one that you have planned. I think that it would be good if you showed how you cut out and bevel your bases, including any do's and dont's. I'm sure that people just starting out making their own terrain would find it to be quite useful. Cheers mate.

I was just on Mt Versuvius last week, and these rocks look so similar to what I was seeing up there (green crystals aside...). Only difference was a bit more brown/red mixed in amongst the black/grey, but I'm sure that could be adjusted to personal taste 😊🌋

I used the small pieces of foam and a similar technic to make smoke, and the colors faded away after a few months. I wonder if the pigments were absorbed by the foam. Will sealing it with stucco, as you did, help?

I also think back some months ago and regret having said no to a friend who asked me if I wanted this kind of foam for crafting.

These look like in a grey colour, with a maybe some grey tile grout on the surface, they might make cool moon rocks! I’m working on a moon board for playing Lunar. I’ve also seen this sort of thing being made with actual lava rocks.

I've done something different for volcanic pieces. before attaching to a base, I take a bucket and mix water, pva/white glue, and black ink on a warm day. Squeeze the piece in your hand and keep it that way as you dunk it in and let it expand while in the liquid. Pull it out and squeeze it before repeating a couple times (Just shake it off the last time to get excess off) and then let it dry over newspaper or whatever you have that will protect whatever surface your putting it on...I just do it outside on spread newspaper or trashbags.
Then I base it if I want or leave it
That looks really well, I Like those macro crystals and emeralds, they really make it come alive.
How about adding some light flock to the baseplate of the pieces, to make it look like the lava crept over it or perhaps vegetation setting back in, it could help blend the pieces in with the underground their going to be placed on and add some more colour.

Thanks for this. A few years back, I made a stone wall photo/video backdrop for my studio, using the same kind of foam. But I coated it with casting neoprene I already had. Too pricey, too liquid too! Next version is coming up soon, and I'll see about adapting your approach to stiffening this foam, by using a lighter (weight), flexible compound, maybe a polymer adhesive that comes in a caulking tube.

I'm working on a modular Kill Team board which has a theme like this so thanks for the tutorial! Mine's got embedded magnets under the surface too
Mix of cat litter and ground up cork has gotten me halfway there but I need bigger jagged chunks that were porous. I'm going to add half small bits of sponge like this and mix them with my current mix and I think it'll make a nice volcanic mountain surface I'm looking for. (not full lava but a mountain path that has remnants of ancient lava flows)

There is a game I have where it’s underwater. It’s called deepwars. It has underwater lave fisher, hydrothermal vents, underwater ruins, coral, sunken ships, ruined submarine. Sea life like jellyfish, krill sharks, school of fish. You should show how to make underwater terrain.

I'm assuming it was the lighting, but in the opening pictures of the rocks they look more brown, but in the actual painting steps they look more black / grey - did you add any brown paint / inks / washes, or was it just a trick of the light?

Really nice technique, unexpected, simple, and very effective.
I wonder whether you could make thinned PVA with some black paint and then use the sponge as a sponge and completely saturate it with the paint and glue. This might give you a more rigid structure and also a color that will not show damage as much.

Max vids is usual 5 mate, although I've been doing 3-4 these past few months
to do this with the "normal" foam after most of the shaping couldn't you just stipple on a thicker drywall paste to get a similar texture instead of using furniture foam with that texture?

hi mel. can you use super glue to glue the foam onto a board as i havent got a hot glue gun ?
I wouldn't, go for PVA mate
oh yeh cos it would probably melt it and ive enquired at my local upholstery shops about this foam and because it all has to be treated now for fire ect it costs a fortune and for a 2ft x 2ft piece im looking at £25@@TheTerrainTutor
