    But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.
    Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall;
    don’t be happy when they stumble.
    For the Lord will be displeased with you
    and will turn his anger away from them.
    Don’t fret because of evildoers;
    don’t envy the wicked.”

    On a trip to Santa Fe, we stopped at the New Mexico State Visitor Center! While we were eating a picnic lunch there, five trains passed through! It was amazing. Due to road work north of the center we took western route through the middle of the state. We saw at least ten more trains! We were later told that all of this was a major train route from Chicago to Los Angeles! I was excited!

    I completely agree with this. Every work day on my lunch break, I'll leave and pick up fast food and go sit at a public parking lot right beside the tracks. Most of the time I'll record a train and see if it happens to have something I feel like is an interesting catch such as a fallen flag car or a heritage locomotive. If I so catch something that I believe is a rare catch, I'll post it to my channel. Rail-fanning is also a great way to get weathering ideas for everyone and graffiti ideas for those who are more modern era. My rail-fanning spot (Cabot, AR) has a double main with a light curve at the parking lot right off a 6 mile straight section where I can see a headlight miles away and have plenty of time to prepare for a train. Also there are a set of signals that will let me know if a train is coming from the other direction and I typically have 10 to 15mins to prepare based upon the speed of the train. Jawtooth and Distant Signal are other good channels to follow for rail-fanning as well. - Jason

    Jimmy, very much on the mark with this post. For me and my wife, we model in HO, railfan down in our village, travel by sleeper car when possible. NEW THIS YEAR, visiting Rail Road museums, starting with Illinois Railway Museum later this season. What is your favorite railroad museum?

    Great commentary. I have started modeling modern railroads and railfanning is a must . I live near Elkhart IN which is a big midwestern hub so there is a lot of movement. This has also gotten me back into rail photography which I used to love doing, but backed off for several years due to family and job. Now that I have a bit more time, I'll be trackside more often. RUclips has an endless amount of sources and channels. I modeled a Swiss railway last year and saw dozens of videos of railroads in Switzerland for reference, proving you can live far away and still have resources.

    My drive to and from work follows the railroad. Passes a metra station. I know ive seen canadian national, but i cant remember what else i usually see, aside from 2 idiots who tried to cross the tracks as the lights came on and the guard arms came down. They made it, but man it was rattling. Cars don't beat trains, folks.

It's just so hard to keep up on posting videos because I've gotten so busy, however, I personally really enjoy having my Year in Review videos on in the background as they are each an hour and a half or so of just trains. There's a playlist on my channel for my Year in Review videos.

    The only caveat for railfanning is it is only relevant if you model current times. I model pre-1959 so my only options are vintage video footage or looking for a tourist railroad that hosts photo shoots of the "old days" but those are private events for photographers only and they cost $$$$ to attend whereas I can just wait for them to upload it online for free.

    As a child, I remember the Erie Lackawanna Northern Branch that ran past our house. There was only one local frieght that ran up around lunch time and returned around dinner time. I remember waiting anxiously for these two glorious but fleeting times of the day. (My grandparents also lived next to New York Central's West Shore Line, which provided a whole different type of excitement!) I remember thinking to myself that I must find a way that I could experience this excitement any time of the day. Not long after, my father was given a Life-Like 4x4 styrofoam HO layout. That began the hobby of a lifetime. the two hobbies always went hand in hand for me, and I never understood how some guys could participate in one exclusive of the other!

    Phones are good for railfanning. Often times, I'm in the right place at the right time as a train is coming, even when I wasn't expecting one, and as my phone is almost always with me as I'm out and about, it's quite convenient. As my current job often has me traveling the local area, it allows me to take quick shots of the locomotives or something interesting, then get back to business. These quick shots are now proving good for posting RUclips shorts. Shout out to the channels SEABOARDSYSTEMfan, Distant Signal, Railway Productions, and 7Idea Productions.

    SAFETY FIRST - Jimmy, while safety near the railroad is important, personal safety is more important. Not every railfanning spot is in a "safe neighborhood". A digital SLR camera and a scanner could make a railfan stand out like a sore thumb, especially in the eyes of the criminal element. Heck, a scanner alone could be mistaken for a plain clothes officer's two-way radio. And that could end badly for you.
    Bottom line: be aware of your surroundings. Know where your are going, don't go alone, and be vigilant.

    Naw, thanks, but railfanning is not much help. I like steam and early diesels and railroads pre-1965. Not much of any of them left in the wild. It’s mainly all modern stuff and everything is graffitied something terrible! I hate that! Oh, and there’s no passenger rail to speak of out there. Maybe some modern Amtrak but who cares about that? Besides, real trains are noisy and dirty and railroad cops are just another breed of uniformed thugs guaranteed to give a person a hard time. I choose to stay home where it’s nice and quiet and clean and the only person giving me grief is my missus.
