You, greenegeens/green something- the PLC guy, and maybe 2 other people on RUclips have totally changed how I approach a grow now, as still new, but have a couple of notches or scars rather, in my grow belt. Lighting, to me, is #2 in important investments in growing and watching you guys has already saved my a** on a few occasion. Thanks for the vids and keep em coming. I have an old fixture that houses a single cob. I opened it up and put the meter on it.
95v dc output from the driver.
.47 amps
Verified with a kilowatt that it is pulling 45 watts with the active cooling unplugged
Active cooling pulls an additional 1.1 watt
What is the best single Cob I can put in this fixture that will be compatible with the unmarked driver I have?
I want to run a cree cxa3590 72 volt 3500k or a free cxa3070 3500k
Please make a recommendation on an efficient cob that will work with my current driver if the two listed above will not work. Preferably 3500k

I'm about to build a DIY light for my aquarium and I was planing to use the same Cree XML2 chips your using in this video. The difference is I want you use 4 10w "cold white" and 4 10w "blue" in 2 separate strips connected to one dimmable driver each. I have been looking at the Mean Well ELN-60-48D. In the specs it says Fv is 24-48v. Does it have to be between 24-48v olt or can it be lower ? XML2 Fv is about 3v depending on the current...can I use 4 of thoose on the ELN-60-48D ?
There is also the ELN-60-27D wich has Fv 13.5-27v. Still a little bit higher than 4 XML2 combined at rated current.
I'm brand new to growing indoors. I've got a 2 x 2 x39" grow box with a cfl hood with 8, 6500K CFL bulbs (23 watt) for veg. I was going to use 8, 2700K CFL's for flower, but wondered if I should amend the flowering lights with red LED's, or build a dedicated red LED unit. I can also make the box taller if I need to for clearance for LED's.

So if my bad knowledge allows, I should be able to safely mount 12 of the XML2 solderless instead of the ten? 42 v output / 3.3V @3000mA = 12.72. Enough power to flower with 12 XML2? Just have a tiny 1'x 2' x 3' CFL box that gets too hot fans cranking.
Hey man, mad respect. I've been sorting through all the videos and coming to some conclusions about using LED in my setup. I was wondering if you have any opinion on Black Dog LED lights. They come in a variety of sizes from 200W to 1000W and are advertising impressive footprints. Maybe a good tester of a true 1000W LED to pit against a DE...

i built 5 of these a year and a hald ago and have been on 18-6 since, only passive air cooled and are still producing the exact same output as brand new. my seedling/clone room is still going strong. i love rapidled.com. but i used a mix of blue/white at a 50/50 mix and my clones grow amazing fast!!. LOVE IT!!!
edit, what is the single driver running the leds on the 5 wide array youre talking about at the end. id love to build one more 5 wide just like that but still keep me 50/50 blue/white xml2 solderless. i know ill still need 2 drivers but im reallyyyy bad at converting and figuring it out. right now my 5 wide array is using 10 smaller drivers and it looks very unprofessional with wires hanging and xable tied all over the place. love to build a nice clean setup like yours at the end.
Do you think adding a Far Red kit from rapid led would offer enough spectrum coverage for full bloom? This kit is relatively light on the red nm, whereas the Far Red kit is only 720-740 nm. My concern is missing the midrange reds.

yo homie, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best. Where would you place this on the scale for use of side lighting? Aside from full powered COBs, what could you see being ideal for the use of side lighting in the diy world?

@growmau5 I put together two of these into one fixture at 4" center to center on the rails. I feel like I may have placed the lights too close. What distance would you recommend for seedlings with my configuration?

Why wouldn’t you use a 4K or 5k for veg? 3k seems like it wouldn’t make for super dense nodes full spectrum or not..

Well the good thing bout that is I worked in motorsports for 30 yrs and am building a 60's Gasser Hot Rod (for the last 2 yrs) so the lets me do a bit of creative accounting to keep shit on the DL but every time I do that shit it delays finishing my HotRod LOL.

great vid gm5 buddy and great for newbie .quick question if you can and nothing to do with this light but i just built another light for a buddy out of bits i had left and i put 9x cxb3070s 3.5k and 4x cxa2530 5k( 65watts chips) all top bin and an meanwell hlg 300 watts 700ma all on an 42x 7inch heatsink to cover an 5x2 foot grow space .i think the light is efficient but not sure on my maths and i am worried i not give my buddy enough ppfd for his space ..at an glance you would not happen to know roughly my numbers are,,,,we have put no reflectors or lens on as only 8 to 10 inches away from plants ,any help help would be great buddy or anyone else whos maths is better then mine

Great video Gmau5! Question: if I mount this as side lighting, so the fins of the heat sink are against the wall, would it overheat? I've got a 2x4 grow space and have been wanting to do something to light up the lower bits of the canopy.

Great looking light. I was wondering is it feasible to cut that heat sink in half and mount the 2 halves side-by-side to produce a more squared off lighting array? If so what is the best way to cut it ? Thanks for everything you do, grow mouse!
was able to cut it with a hacksaw but now having problems figuring out a safe way to mount/hang it if anyone knows a way would be most appreciated.
