So, do you have to pay for care if you have dementia? Yes you do.
You have to pay for care if you have dementia because it has not been classified as an illness that the NHS will cover in the same way as, for example, cancer has.
So, the real question you should be asking yourself is, do I qualify to pay for my own care regardless of whether I have dementia or not?
In order to qualify for paying for your own care you have to have assets, including your house if you live alone, above £23,250 if you live in England. Anything above £23,250 means you will be paying for your later life care and that would include dementia care. If you have less than £23,250 in assets then your local authority will support you on a pro-rata basis.
