The Young Turks
On April 24, 1915, the Armenian genocide began. That day, the Turkish government arrested and executed several hundred Armenian intellectuals.
After that, ordinary Armenians were turned out of their homes and sent on death marches through the Mesopotamian desert without food or water.
Frequently, the marchers were stripped naked and forced to walk under the scorching sun until they dropped dead. People who stopped to rest were shot.
At the same time, the Young Turks created a “Special Organization,” which in turn organized “killing squads” or “butcher battalions” to carry out, as one officer put it, “the liquidation of the Christian elements.”
These killing squads were often made up of murderers and other ex-convicts. They drowned people in rivers, threw them off cliffs, crucified them and burned them alive. In short order, the Turkish countryside was littered with Armenian corpses.
Records show that during this “Turkification” campaign, government squads also kidnapped children, converted them to Islam and gave them to Turkish families. In some places, they raped women and forced them to join Turkish “harems” or serve as slaves. Muslim families moved into the homes of deported Armenians and seized their property.
Though reports vary, most sources agree that there were about 2 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire at the time of the massacre. In 1922, when the genocide was over, there were just 388,000 Armenians remaining in the Ottoman Empire.

I very much agree with you both on the actual mechanics and policies on this issue. I did UN duty in Cyprus and NATO duty in Turkey, and I can assure you that the Turkish soldiers knew about and even laughed about slaughtering Armenians. I remember a conversation between American, Canadian and Turkish military officers where the Turks were very open about it. As I understood at the time, it actually was against the law to discuss by government or military officials. There was a smaller group of Turkish officers who were quite fanatical and were generally right wing nationalists, most senior officers were quite wary of this cadre. The first time I fired a weapon against another soldier, was against a Turkish APC or ally, well the Turk's used to fire on our positions on the green-line just to laugh at our reactions. One morning when their heavy machine gunner was firing to hit us, well that was enough and we fired back, and the APC was destroyed along with their crew, including the commander on the heavy machine gun. Most of you who follow TYT are quite familiar with Santayana quotation "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it", even in my brief 59 years of life, I have seen the consequences of ignoring history and other truths, only to wreak mahem to themselves and the world. The rise of ultra-nationalism today is exactly the type of situation that Santayana was speaking of. Look at the US and other countries where for the most part the ultra right wing nationalists are in the majority of those who oppose N95 masks and vaccines. I was raised in the US but no longer live there (for many of the reasons you mentioned) but I also still have many family there

I am Canadian (thus my signoff signature), but I worked for over four years in the US as a professional engineer with a W1B visa. Quite the shocker for me to have an armed guard stick a gun to my back while getting ice in a hotel. I lived growing up in a large mining town Esterhazy Saskatchewan Canada (The three world's largest potash mines) with a population between 5-10 thousand, and when growing up we had three RCMP officers that managed a 4000 Sq. Kilometre patrol region, including two Indian reservations and six other small towns. Esterhazy has ONE cell. There is NO municipality jail, no remand center, no prisons. In Wisconsin at the time I was there, there were 385 different prisons in a state with the equivalent population of Alberta Canada. In Alberta There are four remand centres (mainly for holding those charged pending court, one four each major city), two minimum security and a medium security jail in Alberta, and Canada's ONLY military jail for short term sentences under 3 three years. Canada does not have a single SuperMax or double SuperMax jail, labour gangs, prisoners running telemarketting or marketing centres, prisoners selling blood (blood collection is free and voluntary). @@snazhound5827 examine WHY American prisons are so much larger: FIRSTLY the U.S. has LESS land mass than Canada yet TEN TIMES the population! SECONDLY down there they jail fathers for inability or refusal to pay child support. THIRDLY they religiously incarcerate for minor drug possession .
Finally, Canadian offenders won't be often jailed here where there's so few jails! this is common sense.
