- From our homes during isolation, we recorded a song which has been very special to us ever since it was arranged by our former baritone, Philip Lawson, in 2002. It's the 19th century Appalachian song 'Down to the River to Pray', and we've included the score so you can sing along. To purchase copies for your choir, please find them at Hal Leonard: bit.ly/2AdgoZQ

Patrick Dunachie - countertenor
Edward Button - countertenor
Julian Gregory - tenor
Christopher Bruerton - baritone

It's an interesting mix of old southern spiritual with the British style of choral singing.
Interesting as in it doesn't work. lol
@@EC2019 you are right about that one, i wish they had just tried it in their accents instead of a mix
It’s not British style. It’s just how proper choral vowel sounds like. With the proper technique, it sounds nice. But when it comes to American vowels, must admit, it does sound bad compared to the Latin vowels. Proper choral technique is with tall open mouths while the modern American technique is wide open mouths.
Yeah, interesting in the way that eating fried chicken and drinking Earl Grey tea would be interesting.
@@JazzyAudioz proper choral vowels are whatever vowels fit the genre of the song. A bunch of white guys singing this kind of spiritual strips all the interesting parts of it. It's pretty, but it's not what the song is supposed to sound like.
What a nice arrangement of this song. It makes me miss singing in a choir.
Me too ! I sung for 14 years while we lived in Suffolk in our BENEFICE CHOIR.
We have now moved back to
GERMANY .
I miss it so much !!!
Yes Lord I try hard not to loose my voice. When will this situation end

Can we talk about that last guy that legit sounded so beautiful. Holy moly
So impressed!! OMG THE SECOND COUNTERTENOR KILLED IT!! Probably the best in my opinion. I love how his lower register isn’t airy and it sounds like he is using upper mixed voice. Bravissimo!!!
I was just thinking the same! Also first time I’ve heard the new 2nd baritone sing solo. Very rich baritone sound!
Tempo is far too fast for this beautiful old hymn . Not sure why they sang it so "bippity boppity"
Guess its just my Southern USA ears . Sounds so "off" to me.
yup he is *really* good... it’s how a countertenor should sound in my opinion
@@gatozarin Been privileged to sing with Eddie a few times, on the same part. He's such a good singer but very, perhaps excessively, humble about his own talent.
@@paulsmith5752 omggggg that’s awesome that you got to sing with him! I’m also a countertenor myself and I can only dream about something like that hahah and yes he does seem to have a very very humble personality
Such a moving black spiritual - full of divine uplifting inspiration. The King's Singers render it with reverent perfection.
It could just as easily be an Appalachian song or a Southern Gospel song, so not necessarily a negro spiritual.
It's not a Black spiritual. It's originally Appalachian (if I remember correctly). It's found in shape note tradition originally.
Yes, Lord, show us the Way. The world really needs Him now.
this was my chamber chiors first preformence, and it has inspired me to arrange and write my own peices
For all basses trying to sing along:
1:37 "Lord, show me THE way" - bass still singing c, notes show A.
1:45 "don't you wanna go DOWN" - bass singing G, while notes show B (H)
1:50 "TO pray" - like first one, c instead of A.
2:16 "down" missing in the text
(yes, I'm bored and have nothing else to do right now...)
BTW. The song is GREAT! :)
Thanks, I'm a bass lol
You are really bored why dont you get a group of people and start working on singing in a distance at least you have ears for this ;) and next time try to listen at the distance first before looking in a score you'll get totally different perception of what you hear
Yeah I noticed that too, but I easily figured the correct notes out. However, musically, (I have a music education degree) its not inaccurate. This is called a counter-harmony, and the bass holds that note to add just a color to it that SEEMS off. They ARE singing about going to pray about repentance from sin, so adding the mixed harmonies kind of gives it a slightly off feeling (kinda like sin?) so to me, this was an intentional scoring by the arranger. Well done ya'll!
It doesn't make sense to me to include the score if they're not gonna ng to follow it. If you just want it for effect, why not at least change it to match what you actually sang?
@@ZipplyZane artistic liberty!!
I posted this on my FB page and offered it as an immediate antidote to the toxic news and commentaries filling our world right now. The response to this great little gem has been far better than I had imagined it would! Very timely!
Beautiful. Just beautiful. How much even more beautiful will it be when we can walk down to the river of life in Heaven! Diane in NC.
Thanks for the sing along sheet. :-)
i watched these guys in concert last year and i sat with an open mouth the whole evening ^^ wanna go back

This is probably my favorite arrangement of this song.
Thank you. Just... thanks! I needed this.
Indeed, love the notes being added to your singing so that I can try baritone and bass parts! Very enjoyable!
Thank you a lot! It's so amazing - to see and hear, how you awaken the music and how it begins to breathe and live in all your voices!
WOW!! that was magnificent
What an absolute delight! You guys look and sound great!
So beautiful! I love watching you sing and being able to follow the score. Please continue to put these out!
Beautiful - I love this song
What a fantastic rendition! Just fantastic!
I just loved this! I so love musicans that can play and singers that can sing (no auto-tune required!). sounds ridiculous and obvious, but these days, everything is enhanced and manipulated. Such a glorious breath of fresh air to let these beautiful, talented men sing and let it just wash over me. ahhhhhhh
How sweet and gentle 😍
I heard the 2002 version when I was so young. Good times.
Absolutely beautiful.
Yet another cracking performance chaps.. Wonderful as always.. *sighs*

Es war einfach phantastisch, habe regelrecht Gaensehaut bekommen und war zu Tränen gerührt.
Such a great performance. Thanks King's Singers for giving us this in this time when we all need something great to believe in. So very nice...
Wonderful. It’s great to listen to guys that can really sing
Beautiful voices!

Thank you , Very beautiful harmony!
Beautiful song, performed very lively!👍🏼
GREAT! Thanks XXX
Amazing...Awesome...incredibly unbelievable voices!
Thank you, gentlemen, for sharing this. It got me through a tough time, last year.
Love it!!!!
Absolutely beautiful. I got to come see you guys in person a couple of years ago, and I was absolutely astounded. I’ve been in many singing ensembles and done some vocal recording and production, but never had I heard an ensemble that was so amazingly locked together. All the entrances and exits were perfectly timed, every note was exactly in tune, and all the timbres blended perfectly. I could not believe that any ensemble could produce such music live. Thank you for sharing this during these extraordinary times, and I look forward to hearing more!
Beautiful
Impeccable harmony, fine arrangement.
My God Nick is amazing on these solos!
lovely
Fantastic voices
Thank you!
Love the lambardic rhythms in this piece.
Wonderful
Love your Swinging, guys!!

You are great ! Thanks 😙
me encanto que voces tan lindas
Balsam für die Seele. Danke für dieses schöne Video.
Very nice!
Fabulous! What I wouldn’t give to have their tenor section in my men’s Barbershop chorus!
Thanks for a couple of moments of middle and low voices that I really enjoy and really always miss the middle in choir. I love Andreas Scholl singing, for example, and men's high voices rare and beautiful, but in choir I like to hear every part and especially distinguish the middle.
Fine lyric bel canto delivery of a sacred hymn very beautiful delivery
C’est vraiment très beau.
magnifique travail
Fixed my eyes on the sheet lol. Beautiful voicessss 👍
Descobri vocês a pouco tempo, contudo é maravilhoso ouví-los. Amei, assim posso acompanhar. Com a letra é super legal! Bravo, bravíssimo 👏👏👏
Very touching
Thanks God indeed... Because
I thought no young Christian singer is in UK anymore.
Beautiful spiritual song with great harmony. Very impressed.
Mighty spiritual men of God, very impressive brothers.
I loved it. There isn't only one way to sing a song, despite what some of the commenters say. If you want another good example of this, listen to Pentatonix's versions of traditional Christmas carols.
This is just georgeous to listen to and to watch! Best from Germany, Hermut
sorry: gorgeous :-)
Don't apologise for a simple mistake, especially in a second language. I bet you speak better English than I do German.
