Metal Lathe - Large Cone, Bullet, Radius, Ball Cutting Attachment

- Опубликовано: 6 фев 2025
- This is an attachment I recently designed & made to primarily cut larger cone or bullet shapes on the metal lathe on round stock up to 2 inches in diameter. It will also work as a radius or ball cutter. Most radius / ball cutters cannot cut cone shapes in larger materials which resulted in this design.

This helped me out a lot with a totally unrelated project, thank you
I used to work in a production machine shop when I was young. I always wondered how to make bullet and cone shapes. Thank you for revealing a lifetime wonder! =KL=
This is perfect for forming cutters to make bullet forming dies, thanks for the idea.
you may be humble... you may or may not be many things... but you are definitely a "machinist"... awesome machining and tooling... enjoyed the video...
Thank you for taking the time to post this. As a hobbyist it is always interesting to see how certain tasks are done.
It's all about sharing information & generating interest to make things. I guess you could consider this part of the "Maker Movement". Thanks for watching.
So stupid simple, I can't belive I didn't think of it. Well, simple stuff is considered the sign of a genius. Great job, I'll be sure to make one for myself.
Thanks for the kind comment.
Once I started looking at this as a project I realized the same thing, then it just came a matter of making it sturdy enough for the lathe. Taking light cuts and slow cut produces an excellent finish.
Good luck with the one you make.
Glad I watched this, it's given me a couple of ideas for an attachment for making ball shapes.
George Farmer This attachment will also make large ball shapes, it just a matter of setting the center point of the ball.
Brilliant, will be making one of these.
Watching your video has provided useful ideas when I need to fashion a large ball joint for a swash plate in my home built helicopter. Thank you.
+ezeerbanmurd - This would work well machining large ball joints. I never thought of doing that. Thanks for your idea.
That shape is called an "ogive" which I learned about when I made a 3D printed desktop phone cradle. The design came from the classic shape of a chapel window, and while working on this, I was also working in Excel for my data analytics class that I teach. The cumulative function performed on a normal distribution curve demonstrates the same shape. The shape was used on bullets until higher analytic capabilities for aerodynamics using high-power computers was available, then the bullet shapes changed a bit. More than you wanted to know about, I am sure. Anyway, can you post pics of the final product shown on your car?
Machinist or no, I'm proud to subscribe.
Good idea, thanks for sharing.
Very nice fixture for the cones. I am wondering if you will be doining more videos for the wiring of your car and sharing them with us.? You did a great job on the headlight wiring video. My career started work as a machinist after Tech scholl but most of my experience was in machine design. I have 3 registered hot rods, 1930 coupe, 1930 pickup, 1931 pickup. A soon to be finished 1940 pickup and a 1930 coupe project. Recently sold a 1931 coupe. All these are ford bodies.
Thanks for the good comment.
I will be doing a complete series for hot rod wiring showing everything from start to finish and without using an after market wiring kit. I will start them sometime late summer.
Thank you for sharing your idea sir
Nice tool! Hope you don't have too many to do.
Only need to make two 1" and two 1.75" bullets for the front of the hot rod. Who knows what else I will use this for?
I love it

+Halil ŞENCAN - Thanks so much
sir plz tell me how much you earn in single month
because i am also taking Turner training in indian ITI
Plz plz plz answer my question
how to make a pen holder from lathe machine.
What kind of pen holder would you like to make?
metallic pen holder placed on table of offices
That would be a great project but difficult to explain in this forum.
can you calculate its mathematical calculation on paper and send me. i am doing mechanical engineering and have this project. can you help me.
Since I am a professor and teach students I would do you no favours by doing your assignment. You need to learn how to do this if you wish to become an engineer.

how to make symmetrical parabola and symmetrical ellipse shapes on the cylindrical rod, one at each end?. please reply with your explanation.
Sorry, I cannot help you with that in the lathe. That would be more of an milling operation.
