    The Kanji for _Hentai_ is two characters: _Hen_ for strange or weird and _Tai_ for manner or attitude. Like many Japanese words, the context of how the syllables are used affects their meaning from anything from "weirdo" to "perverted." (I should add that I'm a super novice at Japanese, so take that with a grain of Reigen's salt.)

    I've been debating when to start bringing this up, but by now I think I can start to mention it.
    pay attention to Reigen's clients, and how his consultations end up. for the most part, the people who come to Reigen do actually receive help. and this is all part of a larger observation about Reigen's character, which isn't obvious at the outset.
    Reigen's clients are all the type of people who would go to a seedy looking guy like Reigen for help, while blaming ghosts and curses for all of their problems. but as we've seen so far, a lot of these people's problems really aren't ghosts. the guy with the "one click curse" needed help getting viruses off his laptop and a shoulder massage. another person brought Reigen a "cursed photo" which Reigen fixed in photoshop. if Reigen's clients went to an actually shady fake psychic, they'd be gullible enough to get swindled for sure. and if they went to a real psychic, they'd get turned away, and wouldn't receive any help at all.
    Reigen basically does odd jobs for cheap, while dressing himself up as a psychic, so that the types of people who would be fooled by someone as obviously fraudulent as him won't actually get abused. it's like the person equivalent of hiding a pill in a block of cheese for your dog... they need to like the flavor before they'll take the medicine. but the best part about Reigen is that he does supply a legitimate set of skills. in order to keep up the ruse of being a psychic, he has to be a jack of all trades, a master at reading people, and an improv genius. the man just wins all his charisma checks. given Mob's particular issues, what better person to be his mentor? Reigen is exactly what he needs.
    and, likewise, on the off chance that one of his clients does bring him a truly supernatural problem... Reigen has Mob.
    now, this isn't to say that Reigen is always the most selfless or altruistic person... sometimes it is up for debate whether he inhabits this niche on purpose, or landed in it by accident. he does screw up in the course of his bluffing here and there, and he can be self centered and/or self serving on occasion. but on the whole, I think his effect shakes out to be largely positive.

    • @Palx-zs1ue
      @Palx-zs1ue 12 часов назад +3

      Yeah, Reigen runs his business in a scammy looking way that attracts that type of clientele but unlike an actual scam psychic does solve the clients problems. He could totally be the actual main character in a series where he's doing this in a world where spirits and curses don't exist, but in this one he's just able to pull it off because he has Shigeo for when the problem is actually a real curse/spirit/etc.

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 11 часов назад +1

      @@Palx-zs1ue exactly! and, granted, he's not always right... we'll see that more later, but even here, the guy he's doing the seance for gets decked because he threatened Reigen with a knife. this shows that sometimes Reigen's clients can be shady people too, and sometimes maybe getting "self defensed" really is what they need.

    • @TurntBucket
      @TurntBucket 8 часов назад

      But that photo really showed a spirit, right? So, he didn't actually do anything about the spirit. I guess if the spirit isn't following them then it's fine, but does he know that the spirit isn't following them?

    • @kamuyking551
      @kamuyking551 8 часов назад

      @@TurntBucket we don't actually get a lot of information about the initial scenario during that scene, but my assumption had been that the ghost was simply present in the location where the photo was taken, and the client was creeped out by the ghost in their photo. they might've gotten it in their head that the photo was haunted or cursed, and needed to be exorcised to remove the ghostly image, but if Mob takes a look at it and thinks it's benign, then I guess it doesn't matter how the result is achieved. later on we'll see Mob and Reigen briefly have a brush with an actual curse, and if the photo had anything actually spiritual going on with it, I imagine they'd handle it the same way. but for this one, it seems that Reigen's psychic photoshop skills did the trick.👍

    One thing I love about mp100 is that it doesn't oversaturate itself with "bad guys". Every single character is lovable in their own way. Even the people you'd be most likely to assume are "bad" are just humans struggling with themselves and going through life. Onigawara isn't some sociopathic evil delinquent like he might be in a lot of other shows, he's just a kid who probably joined a gang and expresses himself through violence because he's troubled or trying to stand out from the norm. But at his core, he's not a bad guy; he can apologize when he's wrong, he values punctuality, he's trying to absorb everything he can from school even if it doesn't come easily to him. Mp100 has some of the most satisfying fresh character writing out there.

    22:06 student councils in Japan genuinely do more than the ones in the UK or North American, which anime loves to exaggerate for the sake of drama, but in this scene, with how we're meant to understand the student council so far, they're WAY overstepping their purview and it's happening because Mr. Depressed Hoarder President dude is having a breakdown. IRL Japanese student councils are pretty much meant to organize the non-education stuff that happens in the school, clubs and special holiday stuff and all that - you saw at the beginning that they were the ones who decided whether or not a club got to have a designated classroom to themselves, though IRL there's a good chance that would actually be a teacher's job. They'll also vorganize things like the sports festivals Japanese schools are so famous for. They *might* have some *minor* disciplinary responsibility, but only in the context of like, giving a warning if someone's not up to the uniform code (and even then I imagine it's more along the lines of "hey this is Japan and we take cleanliness seriously, we're gonna say something if you forgot to change into your indoor shoes and you're tracking dirt in" and less "hey your tie isn't done up correctly so now you're In Lots Of Trouble.")

    14:20 he said "nevermind", because if he told her about the other ESPer then she would want to meet them. Mob feels something off about the guy so he doesn't want to meet him. So he just lies and says "nevermind, I was mistaken".

    The "Student Council" is an organization that exists in almost all junior high schools in Japan. It is a self-governing organization made up of a small number of students elected by election. They discuss problems and issues in school life and work to resolve them. But for serious problems, I think teachers will of course get involved to find the solutions.😅

      @@dchen8874 In general, student councils are included because student council members have high social standing in Japanese culture and because in shows focused on teenagers it is better to have more teenagers involved instead of adults. I don't think they have any issues with showing adults have authority over students. Japanese culture respects authority and respects their elders. They would have no issues depicting elders and authority figures running the school. It's just not as entertaining for the target audience. Peer to peer drama is more interesting.

    On the card-guessing, 62% is a pretty clear cut above baseline, which on a 1-out-of-10 game would be 10%, assuming enough trials to make chance unlikely.
    Also, we need a Yu Yu Hakusho reaction, just sayin'. Structurally, it's just a common shonen anime with a bunch of tournament arcs, but it really showcase's Togashi's (the author of YYH went on to do HunterxHunter) development in character writing. It's the character interactions that make it so great. Also, it's the rare anime I would strongly suggest watching with the English dub.

  • @kamuyking551
    @kamuyking551 11 часов назад +9

    anyway, about Ritsu... I love the subtlety with which he's portrayed here.
    he sees Onigawara talking to Mob, and assumes that Onigawara's harsh tone is something threatening. he then suggests at the student council meeting that they try to "reign in" the delinquents in their school. Ritsu says he has to make the school a safe, non-stressful environment for Mob, but how much of that is out of concern for his brother, and how much of that is because Ritsu knows the incident at the other school had to have been an explosion of Mob's powers? if Mob was recently stressed enough to do that, then what else might he do if he's stressed again?
    when Ritsu asked Mob if anything happened that day, on the evening after it happened, Mob said that nothing happened, and that everything was fine. this is understandable... of course Mob wouldn't want to talk about an emotionally taxing psychic blowup that he's not proud of. but it leaves Ritsu knowing about this event anyway, while having no clue what made it happen. when will Mob explode next, and what will he do? Ritsu has no idea, at any point in time.
    this, but he's also jealous of everything Mob can do. Mob has the power to do conceivably whatever he wants, while Ritsu is bound by a lot of rules, systems, and expectations. and that makes it sting all the more when Mob says that Ritsu is good at so many of the things people value. he's smart and capable, and doesn't do anything weird. Mob acts humble, yet he can't help but stand out. and Ritsu wants to distinguish himself, but his best attributes are what make him fit in.
    it's also interesting to note that the student council president, Shinji, is similar in that he feels like he's constantly living under the shadow of his older brother's reputation. when his older brother was in middle school, he was also the student council president, and he got good grades, and he was in multiple clubs and extracurriculars, etc. so failing to live up to that stings for him too.
    once again, we come back to this idea of superiority. distinguishing one's self in comparison to others by being better... maybe even the best... while others are comparatively worse. it's frustrating to feel like you are the low man on the totem pole, there to emphasize the importance of someone else by acting as set dressing. and if you can't improve yourself... it might just be easier to cause someone else's failure. and so, they frame Onigawara. he's an easy scapegoat... he never looked like he was going to fit in very well anyway.
    never mind the fact that Onigawara actually has a perfect attendance record, and in the first episode he appeared in, he was actively trying to use new vocab words that he learned in class. he does pay attention, even if he's not the top student... and his friends know that he tries hard and puts in effort. that's why they're so willing to speak well of him at the drop of a hat, even if Onigawara himself gets embarrassed when they do that. he's a good kid if you give him the opportunity. but then again, despite their issues, I think they all could be.
