  • It's currently the least expensive full electric vehicle available new in New Zealand. So, it would be reasonable to expect it's pretty billy-basic... The thing is, it's not at all. Climb in with Blu as he takes an in-depth look at the new MG (no flat cap or stringback driving gloves required.)

    Wonderful informative video!
I really really like this car for its price point. I drove it for a week in Australia and loved it; apart from some of the software niggles and satnav mistakes. As a Tesla owner, I think the MG ZS EV is value-for-money and has features that even my Model S does not have such as the blindspot indicators on the wing mirrors, great all-round visibility, heated seats, and rear window wiper. Also, the 7-year full warranty is fantastic! I consider the MG ZS EV to be an ideal second EV for me; and I also recommend it to anyone who is considering an affordable family EV.

Look at you, waxing lyrical on an EV! For an around town vehicle - plus throwing in the clean car rebate, it is def a compelling buy. Nothing else currently on the market comes close. The latest 40Kwh Nissan Leaf is still around $53k after rebate! I think battery capacity will be the only sticking point for a new EV buyer, though I'd spend some of that rebate on a dedicated home charger. If you could drop the overnight charge time to around 6 hours it would make all the difference.

Thanks for your comment Jules. Yes, it is a compelling case and you're right, if you can speed up the home charging then it'd make a sensible commuter option. My question on all these BEVs is how does their battery performance standup over time, particularly if owners are in the habit of always keeping them topped up. Other battery devices like smart phones are recommended to be discharged fully occasionally. Can't see this happening in a car unless you're happy to be maybe-stranded on the side of a motorway during your battery conditioning procedure. What's the Intel on this please? Blu.

@@CarNutvideos From my understanding of EV battery systems there are many factors that effect longevity, such as rapid charging, thermal management and outside temperature. A bit more complex than a smartphone battery. I've read that Tesla batteries are now capable of 300,000-400,000k before any significant degradation becomes evident, with a warranty of 8 years or 192,000km. How many ICE vehicles warranty their engine to 192,000ks? Then there's the Nissan Leaf which is supposedly not water cooled and is having issues with degradation, particularly older models. Temperature seems to be the biggest issue for EV batteries, which is why many of them have active cooling management. Also, the bigger the battery, the longer it can be used between charging. Shame that auto companies are not making battery swapouts more of a feature. Def think there's a business to be made for mobile recharging vehicles. I read an article recently where a company in the US is using hydrogen fuel cells on a large truck to store electricity for recharging stranded EVs. They have a way better charging infrastructure than NZ, so prob not really an issue. The govt needs to invest in more charging sites if they hope to encourage uptake of EVs. Have you guys reviewed the Hyundai Kona EV?

You should have got more charge than that. I would have got about 160 or 170 km. It may be your 240 volt power point has some internal resistance. I use a power point on the side of my house which has no other appliances connected and I do not need any extension cable.

The "engine noise" is artificial at low speeds to let pedestrians hear you coming. It is intrusive and annoying when the windows are open. You can switch it off on the screen quite easily. BTW while MG say its acceleration is 8.5 seconds 0-60, in reality a lot of reviewers have it at 7.5 seconds. Dont know why MG underestimate it.
