Watching these from a shoebox apartment for inspiration and audacity…. Maybe I will brave those bookshelves I’ve been dreaming up after all!! Thanks for all the wonderful content - I WILL make this one day.
I've been playing with the idea of moving away from my job in tech to woodworking and gardening, this has further inspired me to make that dream a reality. Thank you.
I worked for a shipping department where we imported from Europe. Euro Pallets are all the same dimensions. I have built so many things from pallet wood. I thought your design was thoughtful and innovative. Good Work.
@@arcadia1081if you see a HT stamp on them they are heat treated, without using chemicals, that’s safe to use. If they don’t have that mark or are blue or red don’t bother using them
Gave it a thumbs up before I started watching because I just knew it was going to be an enjoyable experience. I'm not long subscribed to your channel but I do enjoy your demeanour. Thanks for the update on the sauna. I'm not jealous. Not in the least. Well maybe a little. I wish this Irish weather would shape up to remotely resemble yours. 13 celsius most days and non-stop rain. Could do with a sauna.
Turned out great! Good job persevering in spite of the naysayers! As the 21st century philosopher Taylor Swift once said, “the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.”
nicely done sir ! also want to add that the Vast majority of armchair experts have relatively few clues....i.e.: nearly all of todays pallet woods are white oak or another hardwood variant. have NEVER seen a "treated wood pallet" (EXCEPT in high end, specialty shipping. Teak, mahogany and cedar amongst others are used). I have had over 50 yrs of pro tradesman exposure. we all wanna be polite and respectful to others ....however its difficult when folks talk smack and they are ill or insufficiently informed. I think you handled that very tactfully sir. well done. and it came out much better than anticipated....peace and God bless. i use a ton of scavenged stuff as well. LOVED that aspect the most!
So cool, love it! Makes me want to try but when I try to work with saw etc. Hubby usually finishes, don't think he would finish a sauna, he does not like to be in those or a hot tub! Stairs to the front door were kinda needed! 😊 enjoyed your videos, thanks!!!
It looks like the inside of a lunar module)) really cool design and work, truly well thought, bravo. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to do it one myself
The steps to "handiness" start with building basic stuff (making mistakes) learning how to improve from the set-backs...and then tackling slightly bigger projects...we all start at the beginning!
I don't remember exactly. There are 8, 3'x3' interior surfaces inside the octagon, and 2. 8'x8' front and back (missing the corners). That equals 72' and 128' = 200'...also benches which is another 40. 240'. The bump out for the stove is another 20' = 260'. I think I got around 320'-350'. I'm still building additional back rests...etc from the leftover scraps.
I lost track toward the end, but around $1200. Now that I have built the prototype, I'm guessing it could have been done for under $1k. I have a water bottle, with a hole in the lid that I use to squirt water on the rocks.
What was your total cost for the build and did you insulate inside the pallets as I did not see anything there and seems like I would help with retaining the heat in the sauna.
everything said and done it was probably around $1200 but there was a little bit of trial and error involved in that process. I did a lot of research on the insulation and it turns out many typical Scandinavian saunas do not have insulation for a couple reasons one Insulation is they store heat usually for longer periods, Something you don’t usually need for a sauna and second It adds expense that is it really needed.
How thick are those cedars boards on the inside? Think it would be a bad idea to use cedar fence planks? haha since they're so much cheaper than finished and thicker wood.
Clean cedar is the main thing to look for. Fortunately cedar is usually untreated because of the antimicrobial features of the wood. The wood I used was a lap/ bevel cut so thickness varies. It looks amazing...and I use the sauna several times a week.
Lathe, I bought the plans but am not able to clearly see the details (contrast is too dark on some pages such as Inside Cedar Benches & Upper Lay Down Bench ). It would be helpful to have approx measurements for lengths of boards used and dimensions - as a starting point to be sure the finished product is reasonable sized. I know pallets are all different sizes but I need a starting average size to visualize properly. Adding page numbers also would be helpful. Also a materials list would be wonderful to make shopping easier. TY
My concern about this would to be ensure that the pallets have not be treated with chemicals. Not sure but I think those that have been treated will have a stamp . But this is the UK . Not sure about the US.
During the research I discovered that many classic style saunas don't have insulation. The idea being that insulation allows for holding heat over longer periods...not something really needed for most sauna situations. I'm glad to say that my build stays hot for a very long time...much longer than we need it to. It also saves on material costs.
@ we are in a very cold climate over half of the year with saunas everywhere. Our stove builder suggests it for our new sauna. But our old family sauna from the 1940’s is not insulated and only used in the summer. Something for us to ponder.
Adding a comment to help your algorithm... My one beef with the build-and it's not even with the build and your choice to do this- but as someone with respiratory issues, I cringe seeing people use a table saw without a mask on.

Awesome...you are going to love it!
I Love this We have thought of an outdoor sauna forever. This is great info.
I really LOVE your project! I am into pallet recycling, love recycling. Built my own pallet workbench, tool chest, birdbox and table.

How do you pour water in the rocks for your steam?

How much weight can the central bench hold and how did you mount it? I am afraid id collapse the bench
We have used it at a total of 350 lbs. It's screwed into the three walls...it's very sturdy.

how many square ft of cedar did you use in total?

Awesome, thank you! Let me know if you have any questions (my email is in the channel links)
How much did it cost? How long did it take to build it?
I had some trial and error in my process…so it cost about $1,300 to $1,500. I could probably build it now for about $1k…
