I have a psychogenic cough. It started in middle school. I was shy and I got bullied in school so every morning I’d wake up and I’d get this cough that was so bad it would gag me. The doctor could never really figure out what was causing it but later in life I figured out it’s basically an anxiety cough. Basically anytime I feel anxious about something I’ll start to cough.

You have perfectly explained ME..for 15 years, since I had pneumonia and was not treated effectively. FINALLY, I have an explanation. I may cough up clear phlegm (sometimes a half cup) for 10 minutes to one hour, 3 to 4 times a day. The cough is sporadic never caused by one particular item or activity. I am an avid bicycle rider and seldom cough while biking. I have neurogenic cough!!!! I am 72 tears old and my boyfriend who is a retired nurse says to me " I think your cough is caused from neurogenic (nerves) cough." So I looked it up and found your video. PRAISE BE TO GOD and YOU.
Over the last two years I have been given Tramadol for other issues and noticed for the 10 days I took it I didn't cough, by only taking 50 mg once a day in the morning...no cough for the rest of the day. Also, no peeing or runny nose caused by the coughing.
My present Doctors, one a pulmonologist will not give me a prescription for Tramadol....HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

I am a constant watcher of health youtube videos. Spinal cord injured...so the more the better..
My cough started with that tickle...after a period of taking heavy doses of herbs and garlic with food...causing sensation of gerd.. afterwards, it stopped burning, and became a tickle that would make me dry cough...after a while.. a few days of dry cough, i started doing deep breaths in and out...ohh yeah! Things started moving. You need to stop eating heavy meals; just have non aggravating soups and *herbal* teas, not caffeine full... and you could also employ nutriets like Vit D, curamin, magnesium citrate, mucinex, maty's organic cough syrup, coloidal silver..cough drops, sun gazing in the wee hours of the morning or right before sun set, 5 seconds.. right below the sun. Coloidal Silver is to be taken in small doses.. at first...and just try to herk up that mucus and blow your nose so your hard work herking isnt jeopardized by the new mucus dripping down your throat. Be ready to loose at least 1 pound... this is heavy work. Once your effort expectorating gets accomplished
.. you will feel relief...rest...inhale steam...whatever you must do to get that stuff out, i wish i had help coughing..by someone coming from behind and hugging me and pressing on my diaphragm.. but i dont...blow air through a straw into a bottle of water to train your lung muscles..
This condition is awful... serious..i thought i was going to die because the tickling was so strong and i could not inhale to cough. but it may be due to not knowing how else the problem can be addressed.. i think my AC may be a trigger for me now... im going to get my air pipes inspected, also my next door neighbor smokes..and sometimes the smell comes through the vent which has no filter...
It feels so good knowing there are other ways to address this issue

This & the other youtube channel Laryngopedia giving a diagnosis of “Sensory Neuropathic Cough” is 100% spot on for me! Evans didn’t mention foods (that I remember) but I know foods like “crusty foods” like french fries, cakes, cookies, pizza crust etc all make me cough, once I stop the couging fit, then I can pick up & eat those foods with very little issues. The scariest cough is a sudden violent feeling of my throat closing on me, where I cannot breath in through my mouth only out, so I have to take huge deep breaths through my nose, then exhale through my mouth until the fit is over! Imagine having an allergy at the same time where the nose is almlost 100% blocked!!! Scary

My husband is 58, avid cyclist, has the BP of an elite athlete, no medical issues except a dry chronic cough. He takes ZERO medications. He was diagnosed with “neurogenic cough” after PFT and EDG came back clean. As a nurse, my question to you is WHY would you use something like an antidepressant thats got many adverse effects and can cause more medical issues instead of using something more benign? Even tramadol would be better than anti depression medications. That said, why do you even need to throw someone on a drug that will need another drug to mask the side effects of the initial treatment? You docs need to go back to medical school. Not everyone needs to be on these kinds of deleterious medications. Look up the s/e a/e of these drugs in your PDR before you prescribe them and think about all the things that go wrong before nonchalantly prescribing. Shame on you.
