Nice, steady work Darren. One job of your's I really liked, was the one where you built an extension and matched in the old stock bricks and it looked perfect. All the best.

Cant stress the importance of training the young and getting them involved into the work right then and there on site. That's the only way you really become a good tradesmen. You learn more on site in a day than in an entire week sitting in a classroom. Really it should be rewarded when a builder or a company makes it their #1 priority to take the new generation in and train them up. There is such a shortage of skilled labour already. I am still in my apprenticeship to become an electrician currently and I have a tendency to sort of take other apprentices under my wing when they are a bit behind or struggling when I get the chance to and try my best to relay what I know and all the tips and tricks I have to them. To me its not a competition of who is the best but a partnership of simply being a better team. l love my job it interests me and I'm a natural at it.

But I understand now and have total respect for you You could easily have taken the easy road unemployed qualified builders and make a good amount of profit and knock out as much jobs and quick money. But as you said you invest into people there's not many people out there in this world who have morals like you big respect. Maybe later in life you could become a construction college teacher teaching the young folks how to become qualified builders. But all I can say is respect
Agree it's your business, but surely there must be some way of receiving the comments in good will as most are intended. Building walls isn't just about slapping one brick onto another,1. there is effective and efficient loading out of materials 2. Gauging of courses 3. Full fill mortar joints for the best thermal performance and strength of the wall. 4. Some debating on trowel selection as perhaps a minimum kit of tools you need to start as a brickie would have been useful. 5. i remember the senior brickie who taught me always said start with he basics and the speed, proficiency and quality will come. Keep up the good work.

Darren can we have a bit of insite into how your gauging the course heights as you go up with the bricks to the blocks?. Nice tunes but needs a bit more Caribbean flavour... Thanks .
Quick question. Do leave weep holes in the external skin at floor level or the course below that? I dont think you've mentioned that. You have shown how you leave them when you put a lintel in. You run a great shop Darren. There few tradies who take the time to show the next generation how it works. I reckon that's why so many never finish their time or carry on in the trade. More power to your elbow 👍
You would only do that if you have a tray damp course on the brickwork bridging the cavity at 150 c /225(6/9 inches) with the dray damp course resting on the internal blockwork
@phillipsouthway2612 I'll rephrase the question, is there a requirement to leave weep holes in the exterior brickwork at or below the internal floor level to allow any condensation in the cavity to drain out? Here in Oz, the bottom course must have weep holes in the bottom course to allow for this. Darren has not talked about this or shown this detail when he's putting in the course just below or above the damp proof membrane.
Don't forget to install vertical dpc onto the insulation up the corners as per manufacturers guidance. The corner you showed seems to have been forgotten
@@darrenthebuilderyes it's a requirement for this type of insulation. Ecotherm mention it in their product sheet and I've been pulled on it by inspectors before. Internal and external corners should have a 450 or 300 dpc lapped round it to stop any water ingress into the exposed ends of the insulation boards. It doesn't take any time just tape it down with some foil tape
