My Rumanian grandmother used to tell us that the little people in the neighborhood were just little, not different. She was right. And that was in the sixties.
Even if Westeros was more brutal than the real medieval world, this goes to show how Martin wasn't that far off with Tyrion Lannister, in that being born noble still made a significant difference for people with dwarfism.
I think almost everyone back then had visible defects. Acne and smallpox scars, bad teeth, badly healed injuries. They would think we are a society of supermodels.
I blame this on the title, but within the first 3 seconds of this video, I very clearly understood the host to utter the words: "During the [LITTLE] Ages..." in lieu of the obvious "Middle Ages," which I should have heard. 😂😂😂
In the first book of "A story of Ice and Fire" (or the TV series Game of Thrones) when the feast with the King's party and the Starks is held at Winterfell, Jon Snow is outside because he can't attend the feast, being a bastard. He is obviously upset, but then Tyrion Lannister meets him outside, and in the conversation that they hold he tells him that sentence, and also recommending him to wear his persona of "bastard" gladly, so that people would underestimate him due to that image of "bastard" (or, in Tyrion Lannister's case "a dwarf")@@ionevenkno7817
Bedlam is such an interesting topic. I would love to know more about these words that are now popular in our everyday speech but back in the day were actual places. Super cool, thanks! :)
Hey man been watching your videos for years saw the plug about Default Mode Network. I liked Weight of Gold the solo in particular was my favorite ❤️ keep up the awesome work “cheers”
I suffer from a chronic illness and the idea that we did something to bring it upon ourselves, is unfortunately still around. I believe it's what healthy folk say to protect themselves from the scary truth: anyone can get sick or have an accident at any time.
I really do believe that I fit in to the category of a fool, because I often act as a fool acts & I have often thought of myself as a number one amongst others & now I see that I was very very selfish & repent of my sins & of my stupidity
So does the existence of "domestic fools" mean there were "wild fools"? Who saw a little person and thought "I need that"? Every day I find a new reason to be ashamed of humans 😢
It makes me wonder about the number of 'dwarfs' who in fact were suffering from 'Down Syndrome' (formerly called Mongolism) The incidence of Down syndrome increases with the age of the mother, from less than 0.1% for 20-year-old mothers to 3% for those of age 4.
As someone who is developmentally Disabl3ed, chronically mentally ill with learning disabilities and FND, I can say we don't " Suffer" from being disabled it's all we know we suffer if at all from bigotry usually from those who are able bodied. Proud to be the way I am.
a crazy person who wants to hurt people belongs in prison... thats literally why we build prisons... to house psychos who hurt people and cant follow the laws of the land...
Maybe "surviving disabilities" would've been a better title. It always feels a little deceptive when the sole subject in the title is only a small portion of the video. It's what turned me off from History Hit channels.
What ever happened to the original voice of MedievalMadness? Loved the voice of years ago, this voice is annoying and detracts from the interesting content
I love how obscure the topics are on this channel compared to other history channels. Brilliant.
I like it because it gives a better idea of what their lives were like then.
Same here

Giving someone's kids away like puppies is crazy
Is it, though? 😊

Still happens it’s very human despite being super insane to a normal person
Bedlam; a place so unhinged that its very name became a synonym for chaos.
House of commons😊

It's unfortunate that asylums have such a bad name now because they are needed badly these days.
man I love this channel so much
Whoo hoo!
So happy to see a new video uploaded!❤
Me too! Love this channel ❤
Your in my top 5 channels ..you rock big time..keep it up LADS from Australia 🇦🇺 👌
Never forget what you are, the rest of the world will not.
What we do here will reverberate through the halls of stone forever.
Tyrion. Best character ever

@@ionevenkno7817 god knows. Probably Game of Thrones or something.
Thought about Tyrion Lannister on reading the title for first time.
Agreed
We all did.
You do realise Game of Thrones wasn’t a documentary, don’t you? 🤭
@derin111 Yes, my favourite show which despite of being fictional displayed many aspects of Harsh middle ages. GRRM is great!
Thank you for mentioning Jane Foole, she is nearly forgotten in history.
She will never be forgotten by Vietnam vets and those who love their country
@@andrealittle2836 forgive my ignorance but whats the connection between her and vietnam vets?
@@MFJF7 He's probably thinking of "Hanoi Jane" Fonda.
Thank you. Cheers 🍻🥂❤
As someone who'd be called disabled today, it's so interesting to learn about what my life could have been in the medieval era.
Being autistic and legally blind I'm very thankful to have been alive now than at any other point in time. Learning history has made me very grateful
I need a movie about Sir Jeffrey Hudson! I can't believe I've never heard of him.
Im picturing something like the dwarf tossing scene in Wolf of Wallstreet... only old timey
Love unfiltered history, can be hard to find unsavoury info.
My favorite Short story

Wonderfully obscure info with great art. Thanks
Dwarves don't have disproportionately large heads and trunks. Rather they have normal heads/bodies and disproportionately short limbs.
The way proportion works means both are true.
@@Demion83 The way anthropology works they aren't.
@@MadamoftheCatHouse I agree, but proportionately their heads and torsos are big, relative to their little arms and legs.
@@Demion83 OP meant relative to other people.
That's not entirely true, dwarfs have very differently shaped heads to normal people.
Lord Minimus is an awesome name
One of my friends has Dwarfism. He is also a character at a Renaissance festival.

Ok but the dude in the thumbnail actually does look like Peter Dinklage.

What's really different from the middle ages till now
I see no progress.
It's kinda crazy to be a King or something and using little people as a flex of your wealth. It's so demeaning but kinda darkly humorous

Suffering from a disability has never been seen as a "higher form of godliness".
