I think a lot of you are missing the point. Really just think about what he says in his videos. I believe there are messages behind it. He has to be careful as I’m sure he doesn’t want to get into trouble
Exactly. He just wantes to be safe and he is just respectful of the country as it is. Each countries have different culture and belief...and we just have to respect that especially if its not the same as your own...
Exactly. I’m guessing visiting North Korea can be an amazing experience because it truly looks like a very beautiful country, all while it may also be scary because of how strict the regime is, and I’m guessing being there as a visitor is like constantly walking on eggshells to stay safe. I also believe it’s fully possible to appreciate a place regardless of the political situation and that you won’t get into trouble if you don’t cause any trouble, at least in a place like North Korea. Respect the country, its leaders and its people and leave politics out of it when visiting a place that is or has been behind an iron curtain. Closest I’ve been myself to such a situation is China. It’s a lot more open than it has been, but you still have to be a bit mindful of what you say and do in a very public situation such as on the Internet.
You really have to read btwn the lines in these types of videos. In order for him to even leave the country with this footage he isn't allowed to speak negatively. All footage is reviewed by North Korean officials. Scary af

Yes! It's very true. To various extents, all communist nations only will show tourists what they want them to see. DPRK strayed from straight Marxist Communism, as their system is a mix of Kim I'l Song's ideaology, "Juche" ("Self-Reliance") and Marxist and Stalinist Soviet-style Communism. The DPRK only allows a certain message to reach tourists about the history of the DPRK, it's government, struggles of it's people, etc. It also strictly polices the messages from the outside world to reach it's citizens. They enforce both what goes out and comes in with very harsh punishments. There are several documentary videos available about DPRK here on RUclips. In many cases, from large producers, like "National Geographic" to smaller, independent producers, the government line is always the same, the tourist locations featured are always the same. Sometimes, the same government minders and tour guides are the same and the same government approved cameral shots and angles are used. You are right. For the most part, if you've seen one DPRK video, you have seen them all.
I couldn't imagine anyone doing a better job of showing us this country. You are respectful, very careful with your words and actions (as you HAVE to be), and still show us things we otherwise would never see. I love these videos. Thank you!
This is what's wrong with most people. They conflate the people of a country with the government. People are people. Government and religion are meant to control you not make you a happier or better human being. So EF all governments that don't work for the people they represent and if you believe in God (I won't call you stupid but) you need to rethink reality.

My impressions: - Here is a beautiful park. North Korean people cannot visit here - Here is a delicious full meal. North Korean people obviously do not have this much food, based on how thin they are - Here is a wonderful hotel. North Korean people cannot stay here - Here is a good story: but I have to whisper it to you - Here is a religious temple. North Korean people cannot worship here - Here are some nice shops. North Korean people cannot shop here - Here are some roads. North Korean people cannot drive here (no cars) I have traveled and worked extensively in South Korea. It is a different world. I wish the people of the north all the best. Their government ... well.. not so much.
The radio like thing which you see in 5:52 is actually the transmitter with mics and all. They purposely made it look like a radio but it doesn’t work and if you check in the back, you’ll find many wires passing through it. It’s mandatory to have in every room in the country.
"WE WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE THERE". This happened when he was in the hotel, on beaches, in grocery stores, and anywhere else that would be a privilege for a NK citizen. Especially a gorgeous 8km hike
I don't think 'going on a hike' would be a privilege for a North Korean citizen. When you barely have enough food to survive that is the last thing you want.
@@Jordan-Ramses you have a really good point. I honestly didn't even think about food to begin with. I'm so used to eating whenever I'd like. (I'm truly not trying to be sarcastic).
You were defiantly being watched, your mountain tour was planned as a way of showing you the “beauty’ of the country; your hotel was empty because no one within the country has access to it; your room was designed to make you think “wow, what a great place” Basically everything you experienced was controlled in some way to hide the famine, extreme poverty, and death that occurs on a daily basis within that country.
I thought the exact same but with them losing SK tourists, that's why they are opening it others repainting the bridges ready..very beautiful but it's a shame they had to engrave the mountains even natural isn't save
I feel like this was completely choreographed and didn’t enjoy as much as there are other documentaries that show both the people and the history oppressiveness if the regime. One documentary took the travelers to a countryside where a fake village had been constructed.
wow perfect analogy,,it might be just like the Truman show,,how scary is that..he probably had cameras all over his private room listening and watching him..
The level of silence in that hotel is creepy to say the least. Hotels are usually lively places where people conduct business meetings and/or have pleasure. Such a pity because the natural beauty of North Korea looks magnificent. So much potential but the people seem depressed. Sad😔
you really think they have the resources to constantly watch tourists? sure in some hotels, like the main one in pyongyang, there's a high chance of being watched. but outside of pyongyang there's little investment and little need to watch them constantly. the north korean minders aren't paid enough nor have the resources to spy full time...
My ex girlfriend was a television New Zealand news reporter, on assignment to NK all the journalists were placed on specific levels of the building this occurred not just in Pyongyang. It became apparent to her and colleagues their was a faint glow at night around the edges of the mirror, and upon closer inspection found there were 2 way mirrors everywhere. They also pretty openly bug all phone lines. They watched and listened to everything from conversations to myself and her employer, to watching her shower and dress. If I were a journalist, female at that, I'd avoid like the plague.
You honestly think they have cameras or bugs or minders literally everywhere even on the beaches or that mountain they went up? Come on dude and take that tin foil hat off. North Korea is not a rich country. They don't have the resources or the money to do things like that.
That place seems so cold and creepy. It's all so fake. Too bad that country is ruled by such a controlling regime. The countryside is beautiful for real.
I'm a South Korean and this video gave me such an interesting experience. From when I was a kid, I was often taught that North Koreans lead a different lifestyle from that of many South Koreans. I only knew about this country from little bits of what I heard from the older generation and prob news reports even thought North Korea is right next to us. You gave me more insight into understanding the North Korean society which would not have been possible otherwise in my country (and I assume most of the other countries in the world) Thanks for an interesting video 🙋♀️
I'm from Romania and it's triggering for me because I remember before 1989 it was almost the same situation here, people from here were restricted to have access to what tourists and foreigners had. I was a kid then and had friends who left the country and I later saw what it meant to be raised in a democracy, how it could shape someones mentality and personsonality differently. We didn't have that chance back then and now seeing this I can just hope that this crazy dictatorship will end soon and people from North Korea will be free (though full freedom is another story, but still).
As someone who used to work in a secret agency , i can almost confirm 100% that every room was "prepared" for the guests/tourists. So if you ever go there , best is to keep your mouths shut in your hotel rooms , or if you have to talk-film then speak in high regards of NK
@@ilikefood1666 the room radios are the bugs. They have more wires then needed behind them and they don’t play music 🎶 for anyone who stays in those rooms.
@vvvVFANGSVvvv He's just being real about what is happening today! You do realize most of your electronic devices can be hacked nowadays by governments - including those who claim to be defending democracy, freedom, and human rights, right?!
The host is speaking in a suppressed tone, everywhere he goes. The message is well received by the audience on how to film in NK. In addition to this, reading between the lines is crucial; although it is complemented by footage of Empty hotels, roads, workers at the bridge.

For all its downsides, North Korea is actually pretty beautiful in some places. Thanks for sharing a part of the country which most people don't hear about.
They send nearly every foreigner on these “trips” while most of NK’s citizens live in poverty and aren’t properly fed. That’s why most flee to South Korea and never return. While I agree that it’s beautiful it’s mostly an Orwellian show put on by the guides and the NK government to make sure that the world sees a constant good image of their country.

C.H i think this guy in the video kind of agreed as well but he only said they were good because his standards were already extremely low, or maybe he needed something to talk about in the video, or even incase any organizations or even the NK government found the video and saw it as offensive or disrespectful.
Interesting The mountains and specifically the red bridge I saw in another Documentary on North Korea had those same painters and that was 4-5 years ago
That is VERY Truman show like.. I wonder if they try to keep the paint very fresh for the tourists, or the workers are just to give the illusion of the park being semi-closed to make the emptiness less eerie. Either way that is highly bizarre!!

Paul Michael Gray Indeed, it does look like a very beautiful place. A country with so much potential if they just had the resources and technology to keep their people from starving and getting ill etc. Can always hope that there will be a day in the future where more people, both locals and foreigners, have the opportunity to see and enjoy the stunning nature and scenery

I solely commented on the natural beauty of the country not the regime. I don't condone anything that goes on in the country from a dictatorship point of view. I'm purely commenting on the landscape. Some people need to read the comments correctly before getting all political
It’s beautiful.. It’s a kind of haunting, eerie beauty. So empty and void of people, lonely, extremely peaceful in a way. It almost makes you feel like all of it was made for you. It’s not just there in the mountains, it seems like everywhere is the same. Huge cities, with empty streets, massive hotels with no guests, fine restaurants with no patrons. This only exists in North Korea.
Honestly. It’s similar to being rich in a capitalist country. People scramble to solve your problems and serve you. You have a separate reality crafted for you with different rules and privileges. Edit: I’ve only experienced it an expensive Vegas villa, but it’s always uncanny valley.

North Korea is under strict economic sanctions. The only reason it has prosperity in its capital city is because of its strong ties with China. Imo, the North Koreans use their tourism industry as a front for all of the money they acquire fraudulently with state-funded hackers. With the internet, they're able to defraud 100's of millions a year from Capitalist businesses and ordinary people like you and me. It sounds unbelievable, but state-funded hacking is a huge money maker.
What I remember is that we(South Korean) built that hotel when everything worked well btw South and North back in 2002 or something. I remember a lot of people could have easily visited that mountain because it's so close to each other. Since a lot of people came into that area they needed a bigger hotel but North didn't have any construction skills at that moment. So we help them to build some buildings. I believe that's why he says it's nicer than any other hotel he visited.

I was in the same mountain range (Kumgang) back in 2005 when it was possible to cross the DMZ by land from South Korea. The crossing was already an experience on its own. We were parked with the South Korean tourists in a camp of prefabricated buildings surrounded by military fences and camps. There was a local village next to our camp that look straight out of mad max with command and conquer-like propaganda towers screaming slogans all day. We would travel by bus for pre-planned and mandatory tours each day with total interdiction to take any pictures while in the bus. Needless to say the villages we passed were utterly poor was well. Guides would freak out if you'd do anything just off. A funny anecdote was that we asked our guide what the text carved on a boulder was about. He said it was a military song and proceeded to sing it. It went on the tune of "O Christmas Tree"... He was very surprised we knew that air :) The nature was very beautiful but the 3 days we spent there are by far the weirdest of my entire life for many reasons and anecdotes. I have since traveled to other weird countries (like Turkmenistan) but none compared to the spine chilling eerie feeling of North Korea.
if North Korea wernt as isolated and were open to large quanitys tourist(for example like paris france) they probably would be like 1 of the most visited places for like 2 years, with many investors
North Korea actually have very large and very valuable natural resources that they simply don't have the infrastructure or the technology to effectively harvest. If they let more foreign investors into the country they could make a lot of money for them selves and be a fairly wealthy nation. But, as china is their largest investor in mining, I doubt china want north korea to be truly open. Countries also generally don't owe money to banks, they owe money to other nations and it is a very healthy thing for a country to have debt. Debt allows a country to expand and invest in infrastructure. Country debt is vastly different from personal debt.
Hanixxx15 just to let you know, I know all the shit about North Korea such as: prison camps, labour camps, the nuclear program, the famine, the brainwashed border guards e.c.t
Dolphin, I know exactly what you mean about those brainwashed border guards. All you have to do is look at the border guards and you can tell that they're brainwashed. It's not as easy to tell whether combat personnel, air force pilots and sonar technicians are brainwashed, but the border guards are all thoroughly brainwashed, hands down. Good observation Dolphin!
Everything is too well stocked. I’ve worked in retail all my life (kill me, plz) and nothing is ever stocked like that. Shipments come in separately and items will always be in and out of stock at different times. There’s no way you can have merchandise from different companies and it all be in stock at the same time. Like it’s impossible. It’s just really bizarre. Like they can’t possibly be selling anything, or much of anything, if they’re so well stocked.
Worth checking the containers - may just be empty packaging. Home Depot did that when they opened their first store in Atlanta and couldn't afford to stock it.

Basically everything you experienced was controlled in some way to hide the famine, extreme poverty, and death that occurs on a daily basis within that country.

The level of silence in that hotel is creepy to say the least. Hotels are usually lively places where people conduct business meetings and/or have pleasure. Such a pity because the natural beauty of North Korea looks magnificent. So much potential but the people seem depressed. Sad😔
Don’t believe for a second that you were NOT being watched..............
you really think they have the resources to constantly watch tourists? sure in some hotels, like the main one in pyongyang, there's a high chance of being watched. but outside of pyongyang there's little investment and little need to watch them constantly. the north korean minders aren't paid enough nor have the resources to spy full time...
@20ZZ20 Exactly! I dont know what these people are thinking

I only knew about this country from little bits of what I heard from the older generation and prob news reports even thought North Korea is right next to us.

He was very surprised we knew that air :)
The nature was very beautiful but the 3 days we spent there are by far the weirdest of my entire life for many reasons and anecdotes.
That's exactly what the leaders don't want . Foreign investors and owing central banks like the fed or the imf money .
Omg You wore an eagle on your shirt- a bald eagle a symbol of their enemy! Wow
All countries use an eagle as their symbol
@@anja6548 ALL countries? Pfft
He's wearing a shirt with the bald eagle. 😂
Anja only 8 countries have an eagle on their flag, there is a total of 195 countries. #stayeducated
Why would they care?
You're the best vlogger I have ever seen. You are the only one that has documented North Korea well 🇰🇵, in my opinion.
Thank you for that, means a lot!
Thank you, Comrade, for falling for the show we put on for you ! You're welcome back any time !
Sincerely, Kim
I think there's no point in whispering because there might be at least three eavesdrops for every squaremeter.
"really modern" = 1980's Hilton
Compared to where else we have been
He literally said ‘COMPARED TO WHERE WE HAVE BEEN.’ Apparently listening is hard.
Your comprehension and listening skills seem to be off.
Lmao yea
classicjag76 many American hotels look the same
Everything is too well stocked.
Are you still in that retail store?
I was born in Pyongyang 73 years ago, and have never been back since leaving as an 18 month old baby with my parents at the outbreak of the Korean War.
I dream of going back, thanks for this video.
You dream of going back? As a visitor or to live there?
I can understand one, not the other.
@@HomoLegalMedic Certainly not to live, one of the most repressive regimes on earth.
But to visit, would be like stepping back to a former life.
@@SergeGolikov You don't look Korean. How were you born in Pyongyang, were your parents born there?
@@georgesanderson918 No they were not, and I bet if you were born there to your parents, you would not look any different 👍
@@SergeGolikov So did your parents immigrate to North Korea? I'm confused how you were born there. Why would anyone want to be in that country especially during that time 70 years ago
I feel like you are in a part of a country that they let people see. I mean seriously where are the citizens? Creepy.
Chip Army exactly right, and same with the food, they want to impress the tourists so they have them on high surveillance and the tour guides only take them a dozen or so locations they were made to look nice to impress them. The other 99.9% of the country not shown is where the bad reputation is held. He also had to speak mostly positively of the trip like in this video because i have heard from a few people that the government review the footage on this camera before he is allowed to leave the country and if they don’t like it, you will be in trouble. Live every day to the fullest and never take your freedom of speech for granted. If you are every struggling, always know that there are people like the citizens in NK that are constantly far worse off than you probably ever were.
He visits tourist locations, and not many tourists come to north korea. Because of sanctions and propaganda. Go figure. "creepy" ? Not really.
@@The80sWolf_ youre a North Korean red flag I’m tipping off the @fbi

Thank you, mate!
much much love for you my guy
I used to work in a hotel as a receptionist (hotel on my back) here in mexico, 8 rooms by floor, 21 floors and my lobby was only busy at arriving times, most of the time was empty, specialy when ocupation was low, hors went by without a guest, so it does not look weird to me at all
A super interesting series of videos and I think handled very professionally. I think he didn’t go in with too many obvious preconceived ideas or if he did he didn’t show them and he explained what he saw not claiming to have seen everything going on as he wasn’t everywhere . Excellent and informative
These videos shows what the government wanted you to see of North Korea... 🤐🤐
