    As a fish keeper, I personally think sponge filters are good for fish like betta fish and in tanks up to a 20 gallon, but not recommend for sole use for anything larger.
    I have used a DIY sponge filter in a 10 gallon and a 5.5 gallon, but the filtration just wasn't what I liked.
    They great for cycling and for fish who dont like strong current.

    I still dont know how they filter. I get there are holes and a sponge and water goes through it but what it is doing to the water? Cleaning it? When it gets dirty do I throw it away? Just set up a new fish tank and have no clue how often do I change them out and part of that is that none of these videos I've found on YT actually explain what the sponge is doing if that makes sense?

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary 3 года назад +1

      So the sponge filter acts as a surface area for your beneficial bacteria to grow. As the water rises with the air the water has to pass through the sponges where the bacteria are. There the bacteria can start I break down ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate. Cleaning is as simple as taking it out of the tank, rinsing it out to get rid of all the debris trapped in it, and sticking it right back in the tank. You can preventatively do it or do it once you start noticing a decrease in bubbles coming from it. I’ve used both my tap water and old tank water and haven’t had any issues. If you want to error on the side of caution you can use tank water. Sponge filters last for a long time because they don’t haven any mechanical parts like a hang on back filter or canister filter do.

    How to know which air pump is powerful enough to ensure the right amount of filtration? Where is that based on? the Liters per x?

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary 3 года назад

      The amount of air you are pushing through your sponge filter is entirely up to you. All you need is an airpump that is capable of pushing air to your sponge filter. Some people have tons of air moving through their sponge filter others have a slower bubble. I’ve never heard of too much air going through a sponge filter. Hopefully that is helpful. There isn’t really a definitive amount of air that needs to be moved through a sponge filter.

    So what does anyone recommend for a 10 gallon tank? Just get a HOB and call it a day?

    Good video. Do you think under gravel filters are effective?

      I personally haven't used an UGF. I don't like the look of gravel. I think they can be effective. I recently saw a video on here where someone built a Acrylic box that they put a UGF and gravel in and sat it in the tank. I thought it was a cool concept

    How do you clean one without killing the beneficial bacteria?

    • @DilettanteCulture
      @DilettanteCulture  5 лет назад +3

      I get a 5 gallon bucket of either dechlorinated water or the tank water I'm pulling out, and then put it in that bucket and start squeezing the dirt out. If the water gets really dirty, I dump the water and refresh it, and start squeezing again. Some tanks are clean and only take 1 bucket, some tanks are dirty it takes 3-4 buckets before they stop making the water dirty. If you're on well water or have water that doesn't need to be treated, you can just wash in the sink.

      Bay Area Aquatics thank you for including well water. I haven't really heard anyone address well water a whole lot.

    What wattage air pump should you use?

      Any air pump will do. Just need to have enough power to push air to the bottom of the tank to the sponge filter.
