I really wish they kept the IDW/aligned continuity origins of Megatron at least. (minig robot turned into a gladiator, then a revolutionist)

We were all spoiled by Transformers Bumblebee opening scene where the autobots are fleeing cybertron. That is what all fans wish they could get a full movie of. It's obviously too expensive so they went with a more kid-friendly look.

The last three films haven't done well in terms of toy sales, so it needed a change of direction to target kids anyway. I do agree though, I think many wanted something closer to War for Cybertron than something that could get kids on board.

You do know that in 2013 there was a transformers made for TV movie called. Transformers Prime Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising.

@@SGD_ToysDownUnder The difference between you and me is. I was a teenager in the 80's when Transformers came out, and I have seen every Transformers since. Before that it was stuff like Gigantor. There was also a really great show called Mighty Orbots. I am glad that you like the junk bay movies, but the robots and the toys mostly look like trash. Just compare Devastator from back in the day to the ugly thing they had in the bay movie, and the toys from the bay movies are just not right. Also I would give Energon or Armada a run for the top spot over prime, and don't forget how bad Beast Machines was.

@@christopherhorton821 I'm a G2 / BW kid, so I've seen pretty much all of it presented to me at an at the time contemporary setting. I'm not saying I'm really gung ho on the films or their look, I just really dislike Prime. I find it to be both ugly and boring. Tried it multiple times, just really dislike it. I like pretty much everything prior, think Cyberverse and RID are a bit more tolerable, but Prime just turns me off in every conceivable way.

I would like to correct you this is not canon to the G1 universe. It's more of a retelling of the events that happened on Cybertron. Megatron in the cartoon from the 1980s was built by decepticons, he raided supplies in warehouses (sort of like a viking or pirate) and Orion Pax was just a little truck loading things into the warehouse and unloading them from the warehouse. This was all told in flashbacks in the G1 cartoon. After Orion died, he was rebuilt as Optimus Prime and became a battle robot. (much like how Rodimus Prime "grew" from car to a Car-van thing once he got the Matrix of Leadership.)
Decepticons and Autobots were seperate lines of robot. One was for military hardware (decepticons - who seem to like destroying stuff) and the other was for consumer products (Autobots - they fight for peace and the freedom of all from tyranny. They protect life.)
The autobots were the first to use transformation to disguise themselves so they could use guerilla warfare tactics to surprise and ambush decepticons. But as time went on Decepticons copied this tactic and also transformed. This was roughly the time autobots began to lose the war and so had to flee to earth to find new sources of energy since Cybertron had an energy crisis of sorts due to the war dragging on for a long time. The rest is G1 history.
This retelling is more like alternate story because no mention of Megatron as a political figure was ever mentioned in the cartoon. He was just evil right from the start. They obviously want to retcon this character for some odd reason to make him seem less bad and it actually sucks. In G1 he DID participate in gladiator fights. But lets be honest we don't want sympathetic bad guys as villains. We prefer pure evil and scary villains that are frightening monsters. It is clear that Megatron rules by fear not because decepticons care about whether he is the right one to lead. Whoever is the strongest commands respect and it had nothing to do with politics. The reason they want to make decepticons sympathetic is to attack the values of autobots and say they are wrong. It's a common tactic of left wing writers to make heroes be reinterpreted as the bad guys. This is step 1 of the phase. "make bad guys more sympathetic". The next step after this is make the autobots look like the evil guys. (they do this all the time)

I never said it was G1 though. I said that like the Bayverse films, it draws inspiration from the cartoon. Here is the exert from my script.
"Transformers One starts a new universe for Transformers that tells the origins of Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee and Elita-1, along with presumably the Great War. Like how the Michael Bay movies drew heavy inspiration from prior Transformers stories, in particular the G1 cartoon, One is heavily based on the two parter War Dawn with concepts from Season 3’s opening miniseries, the Five Faces of Darkness, along with IDW’s Megatron Origin."

@@glory2cybertron Yes G1, Transformers Prime and Transformers Animated all got megatron right. I want a badass villain who LOVES to kill the autobots and Optimus Prime is the only guy who he can't beat in fights because he is a better leader than Megatron who mistreats his own people. The decepticons know Megatron is BAD and LOVE him for it. We have lost the pure evil bad guy of the 1980s that we all LOVE TO HATE. That was something that makes MEgatron in G1 so iconic because in the 1990s they want to soften the bad guy too much imo. I grew up in the 1980s and like PURE evil characters. Do you remember when the PRequel Star Wars movies came out and people cringed at seeing the teenage Darth Vader and he was emo? Yeah.. not many people could handle that but it worked. However we like Darth Vader as a scary evil character. The reason is because the Original Trilogy Established that Darth Vader despite having some good in him is mostly machine than human now. I like to think Megatron is the same thing as Darth Vader: he may have been a mere robot gladiator who was good at fighting for entertainment but something went wrong and the decepticons built a super soldier that was too powerful and insane and his ambition to conquer an entire galaxy was too ambitious for what resources he has at his disposal. IE he will blame his servants for failure despite them atcually doing a decent-enough job with the resources they got at their disposal but he just enjoys seeing them cower in fear when he tortures them in front of the others to command respect. (like a mob boss)
Without the fear of death the decepticons would not do anything since they are powerful enough to probably beat megatron if they all combined their power to fight him together at once which is why he must constantly remind them what he will do to you if you betray him. (using torture and threats of death to get what he wants) However it can backfire sometimes as Decepticons that are mistreated are likely to go rogue, join the other side, or work independently of Megatron to become a rival that saps power from his faction and do things differently. (there can be multiple evil factions all calling themselves "decepticons")
If you make Megatron too soft with no psychological intimidation factor left in him, you failed to see the appeal of the bad guys. They don't care about respect they want power and they get the respect through fear after they conquer the galaxy and steal all the resources off other aliens in the galaxy using brute force. If Optimus didn't exist the autobots would lose and become absorbed into the decepticon side (or killed if they resist) and the galaxy would be a ruthless dictatorship. (maybe a guerilla resistance here and there but it would be like The Evil Empire in Star Wars movies with good guys having to go underground and flee if they are found out about)
G1 Megatron is Transformer's equivalent of Darth Vader. You take away Darth Vader's intimidation factor and you have a emasculated version of him. The flashbacks do show megatron when he was more sane, but the definitive version is the "conqueror of the galaxy" idea that the writers were going for. Someone that is so powerful that nobody has the balls to challenge him to a fight because he can't be beaten. And that's why he is scary and why people listen to him due to the fear which controls the others and keeps them all in line. Without the fear they would attack each other for control and there would be chaos so a super cruel and powerful leader is needed to scare them into submission for them to unite. Psychologiocal intimidation and the threat of death is necessary for any of them to shut up and listen. Without the power to deliver on a threat no decepticon is going to respect you.

I'd like to correct you on the film "being its own thing": One serves as a prequel to Bumblebee and Rise of the Beasts. It's the first part of the events that happened on Cybertron before the rest of the rebooted films.
And to be honest, I'm actually cautiously optimistic. The Dramedy approach wasn't all that surprising, given that this is also appealing to kids despite maintaining the teen/YA audience of the rest of the Transformers movies. However, the trailer's focus on the comedy aspects was a bit too much. Oh, well. As long as the other, more _undesirable_ aspects of IDW's comics aren't here like they are in Earthspark [COUGH] Nightshade [COUGH]*, we'll be a-okay.
*Nightshade was a terrible idea and the people defending it make me puke. Keep Late IDW stuff out of Transformers. End of. Oh, and I see you about to bring up Transmutate from Beast Wars, Don't bother. Transmutate was a botched protoform. He's not the same as Nightshade and she worked because he was a character first.

I checked it now, you're right, but wow is that a bad execution. It feels and looks like a completely new line, like Bumblebee did. They really need to just do something new and stop living in the past like they do with everything.
Also, never read IDW outside of research for the Thundercracker video and I've never watched Earthrise. Neither appeals to me. I stopped giving the cartoons a chance after disliking Prime > RID > Cyberverse.

    That “Badass-atron” bit is cancer.
Otherwise, there wasn’t enough in the trailer to give me strong feelings one way or the other. I think the character designs and animation are good, the voice cast is iffy, and the humor is bad.
Then again, I have two sons who have never been interested in Transformers. A Dreamworks-like film might finally interest them. Who knows?

Given they're using Ariel / Elita 1, Dion would have been an ideal choice, but I think they're trying to get most of the core 6 in the film.
