Good stuff. When you cross 33rd to the North into Unicentro's Exito market you are no longer "here in Belen". You've entered the world of Laureles Conquistadores. Your Belen hostel appears to be in the Malibu section. In my experience Malibu is the best part of the immense Belen. Great vegetation. Kudos.

The place where I was at was the Rosales part of Belen. It's a cool neighborhood. I'll never return to Medellin but if I did it would be to stay in that area for sure.

@@hardstyle8184 my advice would be to avoid Medellin altogether. If you visit to meet women, just sport f*** h**kers at la Isla or order prepagados and stay in a building with a security guard. Way too many gringos are getting drugged and robbed of all of their s**t. I went for a new passport at the embassy the other day and there were a dozen people who had their passports stolen in Medellin. Several who were drugged on tinder dates. Medellin is a beautiful place but a cultural cesspool. Try Bogota and some of the smaller cities. Don't trust anyone you meet and memorize phone numbers of friends who can western union you money or bail you out of trouble if you get robbed. And I can't say it enough.... Avoid Medellin it's a shithole of humanity.

Well....I've lived full time in Medellin since 2016 and have never had a single thing stolen, never been drugged, and never felt myself in a cultural cesspool. I don't drive. I walk all over Laureles every day so everybody has their own experiences. Mine has been real, real good.@@FollowBrando

@@gnolan4281 I found a few role models like you that have had good experiences in Medellin. Some friends from LA who married Colombianas or bought property. But a lot of passport bros and inexperienced tourists have been watching the Medellin content on my channel and just want to go for the women. I think the place would be better for you long-term expats if a lot of the sex tourism attention went away from Medellin. But I spent time with guys like you there and I admire the life you've put together.

Laureles and Belen is great! I have lived in Laureles and Belen for 5 years. But It's not for everyone. If you don't speak Spanish there's a 80% chance you will go home disappointed. Food is an acquired taste. They butcher beef way differently here it's super lean. But less tasty. I would recommend coming down for a month or 2 first. Most people don't return. I love it here and only know a handful of long-termers here! Saw both neighborhoods I lived in and where the office I work out of is. If you don't like city life of people living on top of people this is not your place either.

I did find a great butcher shop with dry aged rib eye. La Cava del Brangus on 33. I searched the whole city and all the butchers at plaza minorista before I found it. They had to go in the back for it tho like a special request.

I would definitely recommend it - International House Co-Living. Unidad Deportiva (the fitness park) is awesome and the neighborhood is great as far as Medellin goes. Most of us in the house went out at night in Laureles so you might try a place there as well.

How do you manage the visa issues (90 day max as a tourist, might be able to extend another 90 days). Is there a defined visa category covering digital nomads that allows for a longer stay than that of a tourist? And, as a USA citizen, how do you deal with Colombian income taxes if you stay longer than six months?

"all the western ideas like you find back in the states".... errr... have you looked on a map? Medellín is west of New York and east of California. Or maybe he thinks Spanish culture means non-western. From someone who was living in California. LOL.

"Western" has no connection to geography in the sense of a way of life.
Australia is a Western country, and so is Japan.

I prefer the term first world. And when needed I also use east asian first world to distinguish cultures like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore from the rest of the first world. Or sometimes I saw Anglosphere and first world to refer to that "rest of the first world"
For sometime I played a MMORG that due to limited game time slots was heavily limited to those living in Europe or East Asia and those players in Europe would use the west because they didn't think about half the world... much the same as they did not 500+ years ago. ;-) @@duncansmith7562
