    With so much money being invested in Cambodia, I certainly wouldn't rule out owning vs. renting a place -- especially if you plan to live there. Yes, rents are cheap now but you can already see them creeping up. Just make sure you're using a legit real estate company and hire a trusted solicitor who knows the area.

    • @FollowBrando
      @FollowBrando 11 часов назад

      Siem Reap is pretty great. The city in Cambodia I would suggest everyone try on for size first and foremost. My reasons for Kampot were pretty simple. It's striking distance from Phnom Penh and Saigon. My girl didn't want to move to Siem Reap. I've got a big new house for $450/month and spend most of my time there working all night, going out for groceries or dinner or planning my next trip somewhere else. The beach in Kep is also a 30 minute motorcycle ride away. Siem Reap just seems like a land-locked committment that I'm not ready for. Great choice for most retirees I would say though. Clean, modern, cheap... it's a different world than the rest of Cambodia.

Got the $$$ back 3-4 minths later. Now days I purchase travel insurance before each trip. I lose weight when in SE Asia in spite of happy hour beer. Some street food is crap but the pho bo I regularly have in Vietnam is pretty healthy with bean shoots, greens and noodles.

      Good to know. That D7 hospital is the go to place for many in Saigon. My guess is that you're walking a lot more when you visit since the car gets removed from the equation.

      There's no Nana Plaza or Soi Cowboy in Cambodia, no big GoGo bars except Croco - the best place to visit. Nice gentlemen's club with bottle service and bathroom attendants and solid management keeping things civilized. Girls dancing on the bar, good crowd, very few of the dirty sexpats there. I think they charge you $20 to take the girls out. Most everything else is pretty low rent - dollar beer and Karaoke joints that could use a good coating of bleach.

    My strategy is pretty simple -(1) I focus on prevention. Meaning I don't drink, smoke, I workout every day, I sleep 9 hours a day, I eat well, and I minimize stress, (2) I focus on early detection - I get regular exams so I can catch issues early on vs expensive treatment later on, (3) I self insure. What happens if I get old and can't afford to pay $500k to extend my life by a few months or a couple of years? I will exit gracefully.

What's kept me sane and healthy is that I work out almost every day and avoid eating things that come in a can, box or plastic bag. I'm aging pretty well as my 52nd birthday approaches. It's because of diet and exercise. Not from abstinence. I don't know how to do that.

    Great general "advice" (usual disclaimer). Lots of good cautions and considerations. Anecdotes are fine, I consider them to be contemporary parables. Health is a serious consideration when you age anywhere. It should be a consideration your whole life but modern living can interfere with that. So, it comes down to retirement to eventually have the opportunity to seriously consider ones health. Health insurance isn't cheap and there's the issue of pre-existing conditions that give the insurers an out. Apart from getting creamed in a road accident most health issues can be avoided making self insurance possible. There is good world standard health care in Cambodia. It's not cheap but still less than paying insurance premiums in the long term. Getting and staying fit is the best insurance for your health. Choose a healthy habit and fitness routine that you can enjoy. The food observations are no different to anywhere else. We're all adults, we can choose what we eat. I could go on... 🙏🖖

      Health and fitness certainly are a good insurance policy. Along with paying as you go for outpatient services. That combo seems to be the standard healthcare plan for most physically fit expats. Thanks for the comment!

    I was in Cambodia over twenty years ago and went to Siem Reap. We flew from Samui to Bangkok and then onto Siem Reap. They were building hotels like crazy in the town when we were there. This older English man told us to skip Phonm Penh because, according to him, it was a backwater and dirty town filled with pedophiles, criminals, and scam artists. We ended up spending just under a week in SR and two days exploring Angkor and tonle sap lake boat trip. I think we paid something like $20 USD each for a two day pass to Angkor Wat and $5 to rent two bicycles for three days. We biked all over that damn place and saw the sunset on top of the temple over the jungles. I cant imagine what the crowds are like there now, we virtually had the place to ourselves and walked into, ontop or and around ruins with not a soul in sight. We took the Englishman's advice and didn't head to Phonm Penh and after less than a week we flew back to Bangkok and onto Samui with bangkok airways and headed to Koh Phan Ngan full moon party. Totally different vibes and less tourists back in se asia in those days. Less developed, more untouched, less comodified, and totally different than now.

      That's a pretty good itinerary and probably the best way to experiene Cambodia - get in and out of Siem Reap from a trip to Thailand. The Angkor Wat park pass is now about $40/day and the sunrise crowds are pretty thick. I still enjoyed the place - this was only a few weeks ago - and would suggest everyone coming for a tour of Southeast Asia include Siem Reap on their trip. Thanks for sharing!

    Make exercise a part of your life prior to retirement so it becomes a habit long into your retirement. Cardio. Strength conditioning. Being unhealthy and overweight won’t make retirement pleasant. Three years ago, in the middle of the Covid crisis, I made exercise a daily routine, after realizing that most of the people who died from Covid were old and overweight - quite unhealthy to begin with. So I started doing a lot of research on metabolic health. To my surprise, many serious diseases can be easily prevented or curtailed by diets and exercise alone - diabetes, blood pressure, Alzheimer’s, to name a few. I started doing OMAD (one meal a day). Lo and behold, I felt better. The constant allergies that caused serious nasal infections that started at the age of 25 slowly went away. I couldn’t smell at all since the age of 25. But got my sense of smell came back after I became metabolically healthy three years ago. I’m 57 now. 30+ years of suffering stopped! And I only did the OMAd for about three months off and on. I only keep up with cardio and strength conditioning. I’m hoping to stay motivated and stay physically fit so I can increase my chance of living my ‘golden years’ with lots of trips to different places. Hopefully very few to the doctor’s office! I max out my HSA (health savings account) every year, mostly with my employer’s contribution. Hoping to stay healthy so I can self-insure just like you if I decide to retire early to dabble living abroad.

      That's an inspiring story and one that can serve as a good role model for others. Bringing your health and fitness routine with you to Southeast Asia is the best way to prevent rotting and rusting in retirement as I describe in the video. Good for you - keep it up and I'll see you over here on the dark side of the moon...

      Back in the 80’s to early 2000’s, the USDA recommended diet was lots of carbs, some proteins with little fat and little cholesterol. Being of an Asian descent, I thought I was eating the healthiest food - lots of rice, vegetables, and some proteins. The US started to see obesity epidemic along with an alarming rate of diabetes. Experts were lying to us. We have to be our own advocates when it comes to health.

    I spent two years in the Philippines. I caution anyone thinking about going there. Dont believe the vloggers lies. Its rough. Extremely high housing costs compared to better Asian countries, awful unhealthy salty sugary food, difficult to buy nutritional veggies at a market, air pollution, dirty water, Roaches everywhere even in high end CLEAN condos, ZERO nightlife even in Manila, and everything is broken and cheap regardless of how it looks in the pictures (infrastructure and housing). I couldnt turn off my AirConditioner in PH. Its HOT! If housing was 300% cheaper it might make sense to some people, but its not for me. Im cheap and have a tolerance and love for developing countries but the Philippines is on a different level. My pros and cons list is massive, especially when compared to a beautiful place such as Cambodia. I moved to Cambodia and cut my budget in half, Im twice as happy, extremely healthier physically and mentally. Living in Cambodia has been the best time I've had my entire life.
