  • Everywhere you look in Slovenia, you will be surrounded by the colour green. Slovenia is the third most forested country in Europe, and rich in natural resources. The diverse landscape extends between Alpine two-thousanders and the sea coast, the Pannonian part is rich in thermal springs, and vineyards thrive in sunny parts of the hills in several parts of the country. There is also a branched karst underground with its wonders.
Slovenia is one of the most water-rich countries in Europe. It has 27,000km of watercourses, around 300 waterfalls and numerous natural and artificial lakes. On a walk through forests and hilly areas you can come across crystal-clear springs with water, which is typically so clean that you can also drink it. Proof of the importance of clean water in Slovenia can be seen in the fact that the right to drinking water is even enshrined in constitution.
Slovenia is home to more than 22,000 animal and plant species, including rare and endangered species. That is why Slovenia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. It is this biodiversity and countless natural features that call on us to take special care of preserving natural ecosystems. More than a third of Slovenian territory is protected and included in Europe’s Natura 2000 network, which protects biodiversity.
The beauty of nature is not only reflected on the surface. Nature has true works of art hidden beneath the ground that are worth exploring. More than 13,000 karst caves have been discovered in Slovenia thus far, and cavers discover new ones every year. But that’s not all. Slovenia has the most visited tourist cave in Europe, with extremely diverse cave biodiversity, the deepest underground canyon, and many more hidden beauties waiting to amaze you with their treasures.
